If you can't use add-ons, you can set the WoW interface to give you a threat percentage. It's not detailed but it will tell you how much threat you are building up. I use it on my hunter to manage pulling aggro from my pet because I don't really need anything fancier.
Also, thanks for this column! I am leveling a mage for the first time. It will be slow going because it's my most "alt" of alts, but reading this advice is very fun. It's hard these days to find advice for anything besides being level 80 and raiding, and even if this is fairly lighthearted, I'm happy to know about these things so I don't miss them.
