Zoltan of Aegwynn is the guy who's been sitting
on top of the overall achievement point lists for a while, and he's just recently
cracked the incredible total of 10,000 points. At the time of this writing, he's finished off
a total of 908 out of 931 achievements currently in the game, giving him a total of 10,005 achievement points.
The
Champion of Ulduar is the one that put him over the top
according to his Armory profile,
and strangely, he doesn't appear to have any of the Feats of Strength (edit: never mind, I read it wrong -- he's got plenty). He is only missing the two World Event achievements left (
Brewmaster and the meta-achievement, neither of which are yet possible), the
Sea Turtle achievement, and then a few more Heroic Ulduar endgame points. Given that
the 3.2 patch achievements will likely come out before Brewmaster, there's no way yet to clear everything completely, but he's as close as it gets.
Very impressive indeed. Zoltan has just
one or two people on his heels, and then the numbers drop out to a few hundred below 10,000 (and strangely enough, the top five players are all EU folks). There's no reward for all of those points (and Blizzard has
no plans to offer any), but it's quite, as you might say, an achievement.

Achievements provide an end to the game and this chap has more or less finished Wow, What else is there for him to do except wait for new content and help friends :D
Tanzo Jul 20th 2009 6:46PM
Now we can play the game!
darren Jul 20th 2009 6:08PM
He has feats of strength, browse his armory page. He's got some old school feats in 10/2008, so he's probably been around a while.
Powazul Jul 20th 2009 6:09PM
I'm pretty sure I saw some Feats of Strengths when I was looking at his achievements the other day.
Anyway, very good job to him. Quite an achievement.

I guess the sake of doing something so monumentally time-consuming *for no material reward whatsoever* is the very definition of wanting to waggle their e-peen around.
Let me know when you actually can get something for all those achievement points and I will start caring. Until then, there is better stuff for me to spend time on.

Such as commenting on things you don't care about?

Achievements are mainly just something for the "completion"-obsessed or people who want to get the rewards (pets/mounts/titles/misc items), whether it's for showing off or for the sake of collecting.

"Let me know when you actually can get something for all those achievement points..."
....such as a feature article on the biggest World of Warcraft blog in the world?

Believe it or not sometimes people do things for the challenge. The reward is the satisfaction of the accomplishment. If anything material rewards seems more akin to "epeen waggling" as then you have something showing off what you did.
Grats to Zoltan for such an accomplishment. Or maybe he has one major case of OCD lol. Either way wow!

So I guess you've never done a crossword because what's the point when there's no reward? Or you're quite happy to fill in just 1 or 2 answers and consider it complete?
It's a good job nobody thought to tell Edmund Hillary there was no reward at the top of Everest.
Some people like to do things just because they're there, some people like to complete things because it's their own mini-challenge.

"and strangely, he doesn't appear to have any of the Feats of Strength (maybe because he made this character just to run up achievements?)."
His armory showed 32 feats of strength when I checked. And several were pretty impressive (realm firsts)
Chamual Jul 20th 2009 6:12PM
He's got loads of Feats of Strength including all oldworld raid stuff, every realm first (including class to 80) in Wrath raiding and the Brutal Netherdrake 3 seasons in a row!!!! That guy puts some serious time into WoW.......
Chamual Jul 20th 2009 6:12PM
In fact, it's quite scary reading his Feats of Strength how much time he has actually put into WoW! - http://armory.wow-europe.com/character-achievements.xml?r=Aegwynn&cn=Zoltan&gn=Refuge
DxC Jul 20th 2009 6:14PM
Quick what's his achivement rating?!?!?!
ITS OVER 9000!
WHAT 9000?!!??!
boatarific Jul 20th 2009 6:59PM
one big LOL @ DxC
id like to see an interview with this guy.
Mep Jul 20th 2009 11:37PM
I've been trying to get in touch with him, but ... wouldn't you know it, the guy never logs out lol.
Rioriel Jul 20th 2009 6:14PM
Kudos to him, seriously.
Some of them take huge dedication, not to mention luck and some pretty great friends.
As someone once said about the WoW community: "He who achieves less is no-hoper; he who achieves more is a no-lifer." Shame he'll cop a load of shit from certain people for doing exactly what he wants to do with his playtime.

I'm probably going to be greyed out for this, but I don't get it. I mean psychologicaly I don't get it...This whole game is based on giving people rewards for doing any number of tasks - rewards including gear, levels, abilities, spells...and it's been successful.
And now there's a whole system giving you...well nothing...and people are mad about it. Is it only me that can see through the emperors new clothes?
Don't get me wrong, I like the achievements that give you titles and mounts...but all the rest that give nothing but points? I lose the ability to understand why people collect em.
jam Jul 20th 2009 6:23PM
Hmm... achievement points, or imaginary weapons & armour that get old whenever a new tier of raid instances is released.
Fwiw, I like both. :-p
Wither Jul 20th 2009 6:50PM
Like Jam says, there's no difference between the two, both reward systems (gear and achievements) are immaterial and ultimately temporary. The psychological hook to them both is very similar in that they offer a sense of accomplishment for both short and long term effort.
If you try to analyse it in terms of the fictional game world - "this imaginary reward gives me a imaginary sword to kill more imaginary creatures" then you have become so immersed in the beautiful lie, that it is indeed like the emperor's new clothes. By all means, enjoy either accomplishment, but believing one is greater than the other is somewhat delusional.
With regards to social status, I couldn't honestly say which carry more kudos, but clearly they both carry some respect in the community as this coverage proves.
Personally, I enjoy the achievements more... which is the only measure by which I compare things.
