Zoltan of Aegwynn is the guy who's been sitting
on top of the overall achievement point lists for a while, and he's just recently
cracked the incredible total of 10,000 points. At the time of this writing, he's finished off
a total of 908 out of 931 achievements currently in the game, giving him a total of 10,005 achievement points.
The
Champion of Ulduar is the one that put him over the top
according to his Armory profile,
and strangely, he doesn't appear to have any of the Feats of Strength (edit: never mind, I read it wrong -- he's got plenty). He is only missing the two World Event achievements left (
Brewmaster and the meta-achievement, neither of which are yet possible), the
Sea Turtle achievement, and then a few more Heroic Ulduar endgame points. Given that
the 3.2 patch achievements will likely come out before Brewmaster, there's no way yet to clear everything completely, but he's as close as it gets.
Very impressive indeed. Zoltan has just
one or two people on his heels, and then the numbers drop out to a few hundred below 10,000 (and strangely enough, the top five players are all EU folks). There's no reward for all of those points (and Blizzard has
no plans to offer any), but it's quite, as you might say, an achievement.

It's like the highscore in an Arcade game, you might not get free sodas at the arcade, but other players will look at you with awe and jealousy.

I guess all the rewards can be seen as immaterial if you are standing at the top of the game looking down. But, for most of us out there, that's not the case.
When I do dailies, I do them to get gold and finally afford my epic mount skill. Epic mount means faster dailies and herb farming.
When I do raids, I do them so I can get better gear and experience new raid content.
When I do PvP, I do them... well, mostly for fun, but also so I can get gear and become better at PvP.
When I do achievements... I get nothing.
You see my point I'm trying to make here?

It's a method of comparing yourself to others via your accomplishments (whether it be horribly random or clearing content). It's like virtual trophies, except it's more just text saying "here's what I did" with maybe a novelty item/title thrown in as a reward. It's mainly a completionist/ego thing.

I share Bod's puzzlement. High-end gear and related titles are evidence of defeating a top boss, or some other tangible and difficult achievement done with other people. I can see the usefulness of reputation for faction discounts, if nothing else. But going after Exalted rank in a bunch of random factions that require weeks of mindless grinding and offer absolutely, positively nothing in return? Spending more weeks on a seemingly-endless number of low-level quests in every single zone for the "Loremaster" title? I. Just. Don't. Get. It.

@Yeechang Lee - More eloquent than I ever could have been...that's exactly what I should have said, you captured it perfectly.

And just how much time does this guy spend playing WoW?
Tibult Jul 20th 2009 6:21PM
Should reward the title:
"That which has no life"
jam Jul 20th 2009 6:24PM
Lame. Silly cliches.
At least try to be a bit more original.
DxC Jul 20th 2009 6:30PM
they should give him a flavor item
like a helm that looks like a scouter
Tibult Jul 20th 2009 6:32PM
Please. It's a pop culture reference. Get your head out of your ass.

Check is reputations. He almost has Insane in the Membrane title. That is good enough for the amount of time he has put into the game.
thebvp Jul 20th 2009 6:23PM
Does this guy have a job???
Chris Morris Jul 20th 2009 6:49PM
bet he has no problem getting into pug raids :p
Mickthathick Jul 20th 2009 6:33PM
I was thinking along the same lines, but more "how much does he spend playing WoW each week? 10hrs? 30hrs? 80hrs?
I'd love to know this guys story as 10k is a phenomenal amount of achievement points to earn.
ROB13 Jul 20th 2009 6:31PM
Most likely he has multiple people play on his account, I mean seriously...how could you have enough time to Raid, PvP, and do everything else, so most likely he has some friends who are skilled in different things do achievements for him.
Xonate Jul 20th 2009 6:34PM
Zoltan!

Haha :D That's what I thought as soon as I read the title of this article, was wondering if I was the only one...

That is pretty impressive. Makes me think they should start offering stuff for achievement points. At least a title to this guy. Maybe Blizz could start offering more heirloom items for achievement points, since that wouldn't imbalance the game much, and it would be a nifty little reward.
You guys should have a poll about what you think an achievement system should reward to people if it could.
Risa Jul 20th 2009 6:53PM
>You guys should have a poll about what you think an achievement system should reward to people if it could.
Would be interesting if there was some type of reward but still the points are just a simple rating. If a reward was considered I would anticipate that there would be an achievement for obtaining x amount of points then (thus giving more points or being feats of strength).
As it stands certain achievements already have rewards to them, other then the recognition for having accomplished them.
Risa Jul 20th 2009 6:50PM
Feats of Strength don't award any points so his having any plays no part in his surpassing 10k points. Kudos to him!
