I think its a good idea, but its use will vary from guild to guild, it is after all essentially a progression tool. Giving guilds the ability to have more time in instances they are progressing will work for the best, and it will really come down to a case by case basis with guilds, it will either be embraced, casually used or debated.
It is however the double edged sword as it offers the same roadblocks that always follow a loot / progression situation, do you forgo the easier boss loot to push through for more content and vise versa. End of the day i think most Raiding Guilds will shun it, casual guilds will embrace it, and it could be the bane of puggers, but that being said its a nice option to have.
