I think a lot of initiatives like this are focusing on the wrong thing. Stopping people from making derogatory remarks does nothing to reduce underlying prejudices.
Should doctors treat the symptoms or the illness? For this analogy the negative connotations of the words are only the 'symptoms', the irrational hatred is the 'illness', and yet people are focusing on the 'symptoms'.
Like docp said:
"Saying "oh that movie was gay" doesn't mean anything, saying "You shouldn't be able to play this game because you're gay" is wrong."
Also, equality does not mean the same:
2+3 = 4+1 These are equal, but different.
