MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all those other shiny MMOs! Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world.
| What if you beat out World of Warcraft and nobody cared? Actually, here's a straight-up tip for you. If you're trying to beat World of Warcraft at its own game, nobody really cares. The users, and would-be users don't. The media doesn't. Your investors might care, but they're probably really the only ones. |
|
| Why you should be playing EVE Online: One server, one universe It's been dead for too long, but now it's back. The ultimate opinion column, "Why You Should Be Playing," is making a triumphant return to the pages of Massively! For those unfamiliar with this feature, this is the space where the Massively staff gets to tell you why we play our favorite games. We try to spread the love of MMOs unknown so you get to see some of the great features of MMOs you may not play. |
|
| Does an MMO have to cost money to deliver fun? The MMO industry is split between games where you pay and those that are free. Some are pay to play, with subscriptions and the cost of the game while others are free to play but you still have to buy a license key. Some are freemium where the game is free to buy and play but you enhance it with micro-transactions using cold, hard cash. |
|
| Sony Online Entertainment lays off 41 full-time workers In a statement to Massively today, Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that they are laying off 41 full-time workers, equaling 5% of their full-time workforce. |
| Cryptic Studios clarifies microtransactions in Star Trek Online We noticed quite a stir in our last post about microtransactions in an upcoming Cryptic Studios game. The post in question was about Champions Online, which explained how Cryptic plans to keep the microtransaction system balanced. Quite a number of commenters at Massively expressed the view that the game should either be subscription or microtransaction-based, one or the other, and not a hybrid of the two. |
|
| Redefining MMOs: Massively Singleplayer? Last month when members of the Massively team were tossing around ideas for a new series called, "Redefining MMOs," I jumped all over the more solo direction MMOs have taken lately. I wanted to point out that today's MMOs are less about we and more about me. I wanted to list off a dozen or so features I felt were responsible for killing social gaming. I wanted to rekindle the debate over whether or not this is a good or bad thing. |
|
| EA and GLAAD to host a panel against homophobia in online games The panel will be featuring some major industry players, including GayGamer founder Flynn DeMarco (AKA Fruit Brute), senior director of communications and industry affairs for the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) Dan Hewitt, senior producer Caryl Shaw from Maxis Studio, Linden Lab's vice president of customer relations Cyn Skyberg, and Xbox Live's program manager Stephen Toulouse (Gamertag: Stepto.) |
|
| The Daze of Darkfall I'm still not exactly sure what I've done. I remember pressing a few buttons on the Darkfall website, a really long download, and then a very large splash screen appearing on my desktop with the Darkfall logo emblazoned across it. |
|
| Latest SWTOR video showcases astounding levels of in-game footage Not only does the third Star Wars: The Old Republic Developer Dispatch video show plenty of in-game voice acting, it shows off the early user interface -- including the one used to make your moral choices in the game. In fact, if we didn't know any better we'd say the game looks like it's coming along faster than anyone had anticipated. |

Is that site just one big asylum for WoW haters or what?
warigami Jul 21st 2009 10:19AM
Unfortunately you're very right. Since the site is populated with so many other MMO players, a large portion of them have a real hatred of all things WoW (WOW Derangement Syndrome, anyone?). I've never understood this attitude of liking one game and hating all the rest. If you like LOTRO or WAR, for example, what's wrong with also liking WoW? If this Star Wars MMO turns out to be great, it doesn't mean you also have to immediately start hating WoW!

Hopefully it wont be released at the same time as blizzards new mmo, otherwise I really would be stuck...or spoilt for choice :D

I'd say its a wee bit to ealry to tell the progect is EXTREMELY ambitious maybe even overambitious.
I'd say there is an equal chance of a blockbuster and a total disaster.........

i think the one mmo that will get me off the wow wagon would be FFXIV.... i pray it's better than FFXI
Martin Jul 21st 2009 10:44AM
Japanese grindfest < WoW
Barinthos Jul 21st 2009 12:38PM
@musicjunkie3000 - If you weren't such a yutz and read about the details regarding FFXIV you'd know that the devs plan on reducing the necessary "grindfest" that was so prevalent in FFXI.
I too am excited for XIV to come out. I was a huge fan of XI but the required time to do anything of major importance was a bit much for me. So I had to quit. I'm hoping that the devs keep to their word and take the player comments and "mistakes" of XI and refine them and make it more fun, instead of taxing.

BAH! I hate WoW.com's comment area. No edit button and no direct reply to specific comments...fail.
That last comment was for Martin, not musicjunkie3000. Martin is a yutz...
And so am I for not proofreading more lol.
themightysven Jul 21st 2009 10:37AM
also, is Cyn Skyberg just one of the most awesome names ever?
Mackgyver Jul 21st 2009 11:34AM
The Old Republic looks good enough to pay out another 15 dollars a month.
