Gary Whitta worked on a Warcraft screenplay
You'll notice that I surreptitiously left the question of "screenwriter" out of the other day's Breakfast Topic. That's because, quite frankly, I have no idea who I want writing the Warcraft movie. The folks I really like in Hollywood are probably too quirky to write an epic movie like this, and the folks who usually write these epic movies are too lame to handle a world like Warcraft. In my mind, only someone like Metzen should wield the pen for this one, and even then, his strengths lie in creating universes, not dialog. So I have no idea. But apparently there's already a screenplay being worked on: with the news that Sam Raimi is taking the helm, screenwriter Gary Whitta (who's written both for games and movies) says he'd been working with both Legendary and Blizzard on crafting a screenplay that included both the sprawling world and a story that would resonate with non-players. But he says that since Raimi took over, it's likely the whole thing will go in another direction, as "his own pretty specific vision of what he wanted to do story-wise." Whitta does say, however, that, from what he's heard, "Raimi is the best possible director for this." Sounds good to us.
It'll be quite a tightrope to walk: depending on what Legendary actually wants out of the film, they've got to make the story interesting and pressing enough that even non-WoW players will get into it without ruining and/or ignoring the reason why there are so many players in the first place: the lush and intriguing universe we've all enjoyed playing in. Anyone tasked with putting together a script that uses all of those blocks to build something great will have quite a job ahead of them.

Anyone have a list of what else he's written? His homepage is down, Wikipedia links to his homepage, and his IMDB is very spotty.

from what I can tell, he worked on episodes of voyager and futurama, the upcoming akira remake, and that's about it. So, basically nothing.

The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington.

Chris Metzen is still involved in the movie (co-producer), so hopefully he'll keep the writing team on track with a true Warcraft story line.

I'm going to go ahead and throw John Rogers out there as a screenwriter, if he can get enough of a break from Leverage. He wrote the good draft of Transformers (not the one that got filmed) and an early draft of Catwoman (and apologizes for what resulted, even though very little of his work was left in it) did an amazing adaptation in Global Frequency (the best hour of television you haven't seen) and actually plays the game.

Hopefully they'll treat the Warcraft movie like they did the Star Trek movie: Get good reviews from both the general public as well as the diehard fans.

I hope they don't involve the Draenei. I really hate to see how they handle the whole dimensional ship thing...
They should start very basic in this movie (or movies?) - keep things close to Orcs/Humans/Dawrves/Elves. Maybe Trolls and Tauren too - but definitely NOT Gnomes or Blood Elves.
I'd stick strictly to Vanilla wow - possible even to old-school warcraft too.
And for the love of god, don't try to spin off Orcs and "Klingons" or Dwarves as "Munchkins" or Trolls as "Jamaicans".
Otherwise, you'll get nothing but controversy like the whole Jar Jar Binks thing..

This isn't a World of Warcraft movie, it's a Warcraft movie. If you're wanting truly old school, forget the Tauren and bring in the gnomes.
The Warcraft universe existed before Warcraft III and certainly before WoW.

I hope they include a lot of demons in the movie. We all know what a human warrior fighting an orc warrior looks like. We know what all the playable races look like. But I want to see a Pit Lord and an Eredar and a Succubus and an imp and a Felguard and an infernal and a Fel Reaver and Nathrezim and satyr and Shivvarra, etc on the big screen. And lots of spells and magic effects - warlock spells, shaman spells, mage spells, etc. Alternatively, they could do a lot with dragons and drakonids or even the old gods and faceless ones (although I think the AQ40 bug thing has been overdone in movies). Put Alexstrazsa and Deathwing in the movie. If they limit the movie just to humans vs orcs it will be really boring, IMO. Put in something cool.

Well the movie will be set one year before vanilla wow so we wont see Draenie at all, maybe not even blood elves but high elves most likely since its from the alliance point of view. Tauren will be in it because Cairne is supposed to be in the movie and i doubt he'll be by himself. Slyvanas will be in it too and im dying to see how she is portrayed along with the forsaken. I just hope they aren't like George A. Romero's zombies but with the ability to function and talk.

Blood elves have been around since TFT, they didn't just show up randomly one day in TBC, so if this took place 1 year before vanilla WoW there would definitely be a possible spot for them.
Besides, blood elves existed even in vanilla WoW. I remember there being one at the Horde Stonetalon town.

PCGamer was awesome back in his day.
Sinfulle Jul 24th 2009 5:06PM
Agreed. The humor especially was what I enjoyed back then. It was subtle so you had to really pay attention at times, PC Gamer was very cognitive reading back then. Ah the good old days of DOS when you needed a software manual to install and execute your games, and if you needed a CD-ROM driver and expanded memory, grab the aspirin bottle!
I bet I know who the star of Whitta's play was, Coconut Monkey!
mmmmmm coconut
Ettanin Jul 24th 2009 3:37PM
I think Sam Raimi and his brother will probably write the script. Pretty good combo anyway, me thinks.
Candina@WH Jul 24th 2009 3:45PM
Actually, going back to Warcraft Orcs vs. Humans might be an interesting story line instead of the mish-mash of ret-conning that has gone on since.
Netherscourge Jul 24th 2009 3:54PM
Orcs vs. Humans is decent place to start. Chances are they'll build a brand new lore-arc from that original game, using newly created characters that came long before Arthas or anyone else currently in the game.
It would really be a waste of time to make a movie that simply re-creates the whole Arthas/Plague/Frostmourne stuff all over again... we've seen it twice already in Warcraft RTS and WOW: Wrath of the Lich King. And the book of course.
They should just create a new character from scratch and just follow them through Pre-Dark Portal Azeroth. Thats the best way to tell the story IMO.
perderedeus Jul 24th 2009 3:57PM
Orcs, trolls, humans... all very good, very gritty. Tauren, too. They're all safe bets. Elves in general get a lot of flak from the community and most of it is undeserved - both the Kal'dorei and the Sin'dorei (Quel'dorei) possess a rich, intriguing history and diametrically opposed societies, and with the proper treatment any story based on them could be amazing. Sad that we probably won't see it, ever, as part of a Warcraft film.
Ayane Jul 24th 2009 9:44PM
...and you have the 18 to 25 male demographic to thank for that.
They don;t want anything too complicated or well thought out....nope they just want boobs, explosions and monosyllable words.
Ugh.
Spriesty Jul 24th 2009 4:09PM
I don't care who does it as long as it's good and not embarrassing. They have the potential here to make one of the best movies of all time ...let's hope they don't ruin it. I really want to see a movie I can be proud of.
Netherscourge Jul 24th 2009 4:14PM
The problem is Metzen. He's not J.R.R. Tolkien. He's not even Rowling.
Metzen's Warcraft lore is thrown together in highly cliche' fashion to incite nerd-rage in geeks would like RPG video games (like me).
He's the source for the screenwriters and directors.
Pandarens... ... .... ... Draenie dimensional ships..... .. ... sabotaged by effeminate Blood Elves with amazing hair and fashion sense.... . . ... .. .. ....
How can you look past that stuff without making the movie a campy, semi-humorous joke-fest?
