Breakfast Topic: Back from school
We're in the dog days of summer at this point -- the sun is high and hot, the beaches and swimming pools are full, and if you're a kid, the days are long and lazy. Which is probably why we've got all the kids in game lately -- as donnyman notes, when school lets out and summer is underway, the population of Azeroth seems to get much bigger during the day. Some might say that's a good thing: more people playing means more PuGs and more AH buying and selling, while others might say they don't really want more of the younger audience in the game.I haven't had too much experience with this lately, as most of my gametime is in the evenings and on weekends, so I already see most of the school folks as I play. But I do remember the yearly migration of kids to video games -- I worked at Gamestop for about a year and a half after college, and sure enough, whenever school let out, we had more kids in the store talking about how they'd spent all day yesterday playing online.
So is it a problem for you, or have you even noticed the influx of summer visitors at all? We have to be careful not to generalize here, as while some younger folks can cause issues (either by acting like kids, or just by filling up the instance queues), there are certainly others who act very mature for their age. Some of them, especially with parental supervision, can actually make model players. So the question here is: how have you experienced the sudden rash of schoolkids?

They have just as much right to play as everyone else :O

On my server (Proudmoore) when school's out for the kids, Wintergrasp gets filled like crazy, barley any chance for the horde to get it >.

I have seen more Night elf,Human and Blood elves. They seem to attract the kiddies. I wish school was year round like in Japan...

During my quest for loremaster this summer I've spent a bit of time in Azeroth completing old questlines and I've run into a lot of kids or people I assume are kids. Usually the convo goes something like this...
Kid "can u help me with quests"
Me "No, sorry I'm busy"
Kid "it will only take 5mins!!!!!!"
Rinse. Repeat. /ignore
Admittedly I am not the nicest person on the face of the planet, I will help friends with quests but I hate it when people I don't know try to insist I drop anything I'm doing to help them. Usually if I see a lowbie trying to do something I'll give them a hand but never if it is demanded.
Seaborn Jul 25th 2009 9:40AM
Yes. I have had many of that same conversation. You forgot the "Can I have 5 gold".
I wish there were adult servers (over 25). IMO many of the 17-21 are worse than the kiddies.

@Seaborn
The problem is. Most of the idiots, morons, noobs and the like I meet, are OVER, 25. I don't act like them, and I'm 15. Putting in a stereo type that everyone under is just, well, stupid. I've met MANY mature 12 year olds, when the most idiotic, moronic and straight up noobs were in their 30s.
Ostego Jul 25th 2009 2:55PM
@Sargenus
yes people can be mature for their age and I will be the first to admit that age does not necessarily mean more wisdom and experience. That being said it is exceptionally hard to find someone in your age range who is mature, I have to say you are not helping your cause when you continue to reuse insulting words like noob (try expanding your vocabulary to not be using insults when you are trying to logically argue for your point of view).
I'm 23, I attend a university (woo...) and I tutor at said university. I can tell you that not many people have the patience to put up with younger people and tend to group them within a frameset that causes them to avoid younger people. It is stereo-typing but it is something that naturally happens with humans; we categorize things so that we can understand them and interact with them (Ie: this is a chair, it doesn't have 4 legs and it spins around but it's a chair just like a foldable card table chair is a chair). If you haven't guessed by now I am an anthropologist and issues with humanity intrigue me, of course in my studies we deal with things like "racial" profiling and how different groups interact. I will say I've met a lot of frat boys and sorority sisters that seem to have less common sense than your average 13 yr old.

My favorite was when I was questing on my warlock in Thousand Needles and a warlock in Eversong sent me a tell asking how to do the voidwalker quest. I tried to be helpful and explain, but he refused to read my advice. Eventually he started demanding that I go halfway across the world to help him. Then, when I suggested that was a little ridiculous, he told me I was a terrible person and put me on ignore.

You'll see patterns if you want to see patterns.
Anaughtybear Jul 25th 2009 8:43AM
You'll also see patterns if they're there. You can't dispute that more little kids play during the summer. Kids in general are going to act more immature, because they are kids. Don't try to defend them and be the good guy. I don't care if they are around. I just wish they would learn to spell when they are in school.
Laurulen Jul 25th 2009 8:46AM
Simply because someone wants to see a pattern, doesn't preclude one from existing. Bias may change perspective, but not that facts (which you so conveniently avoided addressing). Please use some basic logic before you post next time.

@ Laurulen:
Big words coming from someone who doesn't provide any facts him/herself. Pray tell me, what are these "facts" that I'm missing?
Dazaras Jul 25th 2009 11:31AM
@Knob
The Facts are there are more people playing in the summer than in the winter. You could attribute this to other things besides school letting out, but you'd have a hard time convincing the rest of us.
Honestly, online I've found adults just as capable of being immature as children. I don't know what it is about the internet, but it seems to just suck the maturity out of some people.
Cashew Jul 25th 2009 8:32AM
I've not noticed too many troubles with kids, aside from the "BRB, Mom's calling me!" and whatnot of that ilk.
The only thing though, if you're a kid and reading this-- if you know the 'rents have set a lockout for after a certain time, please let the raid leader know, It's really fun to lose a member during a boss fight.
Elwoods Jul 25th 2009 12:43PM
Usually with me it "hang on the wife wants something" *shrug* :)
Cynthx Jul 26th 2009 1:45AM
also forgot the ever annoying; "sorry guys, my kid wanted attention." i dont know what's worse, being grouped w/ a kid that has a curfew or some parent ignoring his kid to play then making us wait. either way, we're screwed.
Snowmist Jul 25th 2009 8:36AM
Personally I think there should be age specific servers, ones for adults only and ones for children only, nether of which you'd be able to enter if you're one or the other. I think this would solve a lot of problems and headaches, not to mention giving younger kids a safer enviroment in which to play.
Bod Jul 25th 2009 8:44AM
Oh dear...Let me recommend a book for you. Lord of the Flies....go read.

And be stuck with people I have less patience with? No thank you, good sir!
