Breakfast Topic: Will you buy the TCG mounts now they're no longer BoP?

Earlier in the week, we mentioned that mounts from the WoW Trading Card Game are no longer Bind on Pickup. Do you hear that ever-advancing noise? That thunderous roar? That's the sound of a million collectors cheering their little hearts out. Ever the boon and bane of the die-hard mount addict, these cards have been known to fetch a pretty price on eBay and have been the subject of recent scams. Indeed as the owner of El Pollo Grande, the Big Battle Bear (aka The Red Bearon) and both forms of the X-51 Nether Rocket, I can relate. I really want the infamous Spectral Tiger and now, for the right sum of gold, it seems like I could have a chance.
So I wonder, constant readers, does this change mean you will finally be able to get your hands on a mount without paying top dollar on an auction website? How much exactly, while we're at it, would you be willing to pay with in-game gold for a mount? Why do you think Blizzard have implemented this system? Is it just another gold sink or the answer to many players' prayers?

I'm certainly going to try to. I must have that chicken.

Yes. I was obsessed over getting my Tauren a White Hawkstrider (52 runs of Magister's Terrace without it dropping).
Then Blizzard let Taurens ride Hawkstrides, and I was like *joy*
Then I continued soloing Magister's Terrace in an attempt to get the phoenix pet and the White Hawkstrider dropped and I was like -_-; But still *joy*
Now there is an actual chicken mount.
I must have it...
TAUREN ON A CHOCOBO!

Is it me, or is this the 3rd article stating this without any confirmation from Blizzard?
Aaron Jul 28th 2009 2:35PM
@peagle what's also interesting is that it has been mentioned that it's back to BoP in PTR and no one seems to be paying attention to that. People only read/hear/see what they want I guess. /shrug

awesome

As much as I would want to spend my gold on this, I doubt I would even be able to afford the cheapest mount...
Jorges Jul 28th 2009 10:27AM
You would be losing money anyway, IMO. Yeah, you could buy the mount, but it'll never be as special and fulfilling as it was. A lot of people will have it now, and spending 10000g (or real money) for it, and then seeing half dalaran with the same mount? No thanks.
Nothing can beat he joy I felt when I won the /roll for Attumen the Huntsman's horse, one of the rarest mounts in game. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30480
So no, as much as I like these mounts, they completely lost they "real" value if they're going to be BoE. The meaning of these mounts now is "I have a lot of gold/money".
Ringo Flinthammer Jul 28th 2009 10:51AM
Your Attumen mount isn't devalued by people soloing him for the mount, so why would a TCG mount be devalued by other people having it?
And since the mounts are back to BOP and unique on PTR, I'm not sure if any will be up on the auction house anyway.
Blake Jul 28th 2009 10:51AM
Why do you think more people will have it now? You still have to find the loot card, pick which server you want the loot on, go to Booty Bay and get your loot, and then find some schmuck who wants to pay 100,000g for your loot card. These items will still remain as rare as they always have been - people will just spend in-game gold instead of US$ for the mounts.
There aren't going to be hundreds of the cards popping up instantaneously on every server just because they're bind on use.
Jorges Jul 28th 2009 12:42PM
@ Ringo: Because it was bought and not won? it's not the same thing to open a card pack and find the loot card in there than browsing eBay for the card. And instead eBay, you're just going to browse the AH. It's not about the mount being undervalued, it's about the feeling you get when finding it. Farming a mount involves some kind of effort, and a lot of time if you're unlucky. Buying it maybe involves a lot of time and effort to get the money.... but it could also be gold bought from a goldseller.
@ Blake: You're right. But it's now even more possible to see more than one of these in the same server or even at the same place. Most people don't know about these mounts. Being in the AH it's a huge change. Because of that I think the "uniqueness" is lost.
Of course, the amount of money ppl will ask for it will make them rare not for the drop rate, but for the outrageous price.
I would love to have one of these mounts, and if I had the gold maybe i would buy one. But i prefer to find the loot card myself, nothing woud beat that IMO.

While I'd love to buy them for the right price in in-game gold, I can't see the advantage from a seller's point of view. After all, when faced with the choice between $1000 for a spectral tiger mount (not the highest I've seen) or a few thousand gold in-game... I think I'd take the $1000.
BlackTigerâ„¢ Jul 28th 2009 8:39AM
Last spectral tiger's price I've heard - $300, not $1000.
$1000 was for Murky (murlock).
But $300 in cash is still much better than any in-game gold.
Todd Jul 28th 2009 10:21AM
$300 for a Spectral Tiger? Where are you looking? On ebay they are all $900-1000.
Pff I'd buy one for $300.
Fierna Jul 28th 2009 12:15PM
Yeah the people that are selling the loot cards tend to be the folks who buy up massive amounts of card packs for the sole purpose of reselling them. I mean if they really want to get in game gold in that way wouldn't they just sell a mount for a boatload of cash and then use a small portion of that to buy it from gold farmers?
Good luck getting chickens and rockets at the AH
jfofla Jul 28th 2009 4:26PM
I look for the Tiger all the time, and yes, it is $1000.0.
As a side note, I recently sold my Baby Murloc card from the First Blizzcon for $2000.00
Hoffa Jul 28th 2009 8:08AM
Just makes me happy (If it goes into effect)
that I can share them with all my toons :D
zappo Jul 28th 2009 9:50AM
I think that's one of the biggest things I would have to worry about if I even got one. I've gone through 1 main, and sorta don't play my other one at the moment. It would sort of suck to get something really cool like this, then decide you don't want to play that class later on. I'm still not sure what character I want to give the 'refer a friend' mount for this reason. I also wish they'd do this with other card game loot.
Fast Jul 28th 2009 8:08AM
Spectral Tiger will go for around 15-20k gold for sure or even more, i would buy it for sure for 15 or 20k
Todd Jul 28th 2009 8:26AM
Uh, no. That is THE most sought after mount of the TCG mounts. You're easily looking at 100k instead.
Thon Jul 28th 2009 10:01AM
Aren't we forgetting something here?
Just because these mounts are now tradeable, doesn't mean that they're any less rare.
People seem to think they'll start falling out of the sky, or magically popping up on AH every few hours. There's still someone out there who has to get that particular card, the chances of which are pretty slim. And even then, that person has the option of keeping the mount, or selling it. If that person happens to sell the mount, do you really think you'll get to the AH fast enough to buy it? I don't think so. All in all, I'm just saying; don't get your hopes up.
