Sam Raimi's production diary
Oh, Lore Sjoberg, will you ever stop being awesome? I sure hope not. I've been a fan of his Book of Ratings and his webcomics (NSFW language, I guess) for a while, but apparently he's been writing for Wired as well, and his latest column brings us Sam Raimi's production diary from the Warcraft movie.
It's pretty hilarious throughout. If the real movie is as good as this production diary, in fact, it may be watchable. Some favorite bits:
- "Nerf Shia LaBeouf"
- Why is it that every time we wrap for the day, one of the extras asks me to "open a portal to Dalaran"? Is he asking for drugs?
- If I didn't know better, I'd think someone was paying them for detached body parts.
- ...it turns out I can just give them, like, five things and let them fight over who gets them.
It's a great read altogether, so click over if you have a spare minute.
On a side note, I'm certain there has been at least one good video game movie, although admittedly I can't figure out what it might be.

Doom definitely wasn't one the good ones.

The only good video game movie would be the first "Mortal Kombat". Mind you, "good" doesn't mean "art", but it was a good movie.

The first one was definitely fun and had a great soundtrack. The second one... let's not talk about the second one.
Artiefarkel Jul 28th 2009 5:32PM
@Gessilea
What second one?

Mortal Kombat was only a decent video game movie because it is a straight-up remake of Enter the Dragon. Go watch the Bruce Lee film and see if your opinion of Mortal Kombat changes.

I will have to say that even though most people thought the Street Fighter movie bombed, I was actually impressed by how they arranged and incorporated good reasons for the cast of characters to meet. As to Mortal Kombat, it was flashier and more expensive, but I liked SF more even though the fight major fight scene with Bison was the one let down throughout the film.

I just procced that production diary and laughed so loud I aggroed my boss.

Booo, at horrible humor. I'd wager you think a lot of stupid things are funny.

Tomb Raider was good... kinda. Well, I liked it but I admit it'd have been better if the story was that of TB or TB2 maybe even TB4.

I'd add "Resident Evil" to the list, but only the first one. And I liked "Doom".

I can name three videogame movies that were pretty decent or at least entertaining: "Silent Hill", "Mortal Kombat", and "FFVII: Advent Children".

"Mortal Kombat" is probably the best. Not Oscar material, sure, but fun, witty in a lot of places, and not as dumb as a lot of action movies. (I'm a geek, so sue me.) Someone else might know better than me, since I haven't seen a lot of the movies listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games

How can you mention Lore and not talk about the Brunching Shuttlecocks (http://brunching.com), where he got his web start (and where the ratings from the Book of Ratings started)?!
RetPallyJil Jul 28th 2009 5:29PM
I thought I recognized his name from this:

I was right. Yay me. 10xp!

Yeah, Silent Hill was a good one.
And despite what people say, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter (first one, not the chun li bull), and the Super Mario Bros. were decently good and enjoyable. Hell, for once Luigi gets the girl in something.
Sorahn Jul 28th 2009 7:00PM
Super Mario Bros? Good? What have you been smoking?
devilsei Jul 28th 2009 7:21PM
Like I said, decently good. I enjoyed it with what it was. Instead of trying to make it a generic "Guy saves princess" fantasy romp LIKE every game with a princess, they modernized it. Koopah was still Koopah, Goombas actually looked intimidating, yet retained their simplistic way of thinking.
It also did something unique to the story, showed what happens if Koopah actually took control. He turned the place into some dark, dystopian hellhole with corruption seeping through every crack. Nice change of pace from his generic castle+boos system.
It may not of been everyone's cup of tea, and not exactly good compared to other movies, but you know what? IT was pretty damn good for a game movie.

Nope. You're wrong. Mario Bros. movie was the worst movie ever made. EVER.
There, that's settled now.
devilsei Jul 28th 2009 8:17PM
Wrongo
Wasn't made by Uwe Boll, so it can't be the worst.
Tilt Jul 29th 2009 3:31AM
No, 'Manos, the Hands of Fate' is the worst movie ever made.
