TurpsterVision: Jousting for Dummies
We can't believe it either – Turpster has been let loose on WoW.com to bring you videos from in and around the World of Warcraft! You've heard him on the WoW Insider Show, and now see him on TurpsterVision right here on WoW.com.
Patch 3.2 brings us many, many great ways for us to get our hands on Champions Seals along with some awesome things to spend them on! One of the easiest ways to get your hands on some of these new items is by completing the daily quests offered up in Ice Crown at the Argent Tournament. Now the Tournament has been around for quite some time now, but loads of people have told me that they either haven't taken part in it or just don't know how to Joust. If you are a Jousting n00b then this TurpsterVision is for you.
When you equip your lance and mount up on to your valiant steed your action bar will display the following relevant skills:

In a nutshell, this is how I choose to Joust. This isn't the only way, this isn't even the best way (Get friends to DPS your NPC down while you just break his Defend) but it is a fairly simple way to get started and see what works best for you. A side note to Warriors, if you are in Defensive stance, you will have all of your attacks reduced by 10%, switch to Battle Stance before you Joust -- I always forget.
- It is important to make sure you click the
3 times before each fight to ensure that you have the maximum application of the buff to reduce damage taken by 50%. If you have just come out of a fight remember to hit the
healing your mount back to full health before the duel. - When you talk with the NPC to start the fight, make sure you are behind them as they will run forward once the fight has started to then turn and begin attacking you.
- When they run forward you should start to walk backwards while spamming
and then
when it is avalible. - Now you are in melee range and should start to spam
. If you have had any of your stacks of Defend removed you should reapply them with
as soon as possible. - Your opponent will try to break away from you and run to range to then Charge back in towards you. You have a few options here, you can run with them spamming
but they will just have the opportunity to stack more Defends since you are not breaking their Defend with any skills. Instead I like to stay at range, using
as they run away and then mash
as soon as it is available. This can be tricky if you get trapped waiting on cooldowns due to a late Defend refresh. If you don't think you have time for both the Shield Breaker and the Charge, just go with the Charge to remove a stack of defend and while at the same time closing down the range so that your opponent can't do much damage to you.

The image before you start the video is not flattering in the least...

my method is similar:
As they center themselves, shield break. as they reenter charge range, charge. As you're circling around, throw a shield breaker. You'll have a yellow shield, they'll likely have no shield. Throw a few thrusts while rebuilding any lost shield. When they run away, back up and charge. Shield break. Thrust and rebuild shield. Repeat.

Add in a fast thrust after the charge and you will dominate.

that's what she said

I have found this rotation to be very successful:
1. Make sure you are side by side to your opponent and facing in the same direction as him before starting the duel.
2. As soon as he accepts and gallops away - press 3=Charge and then 1=Thrust (this will give you the damage of your Charge and an added bonus of your Thrust)
3. Your Charges momentum will bring you past the mob, use this momentum to circle back to opponent, right or left, which ever you prefer, and throw a 2=Shield-Breaker. (this should bring your opponent down to 1 or 0 shield strength).
4. At melee range of your opponent continue 1=Thrust and if he snuck in a shield breaker on you during step 3 click 4=Defend until you have 3 shields up.Your opponent will break away at ranged at some point during the melee phase, when he does repeat steps 2 and 3.
Happy Jousting!

@ Gothia
I do the jousting the same way as you, and I must say it's more effective than what the author suggests.
Tenko Jul 31st 2009 5:33PM
I do it this way as well Gothia, works completely fine and until I started doing this way i sucked and lost all the time ;p

@Gothia
This is my MO as well.

Good concept for a video, but not all that well done. With a few more takes, and a bit more editing, the strategy could have been a bit more clear. I really enjoy Turpster vision though. Keep them coming!

Barinthos: This is hardly the front page of playboy is it :P
Barinthos Jul 30th 2009 2:10PM
It's Turpster though...so it's just as good is it not? :P

I've developed a similar method in jousting, at least with the tournament folks. It's pretty much:
Challenge-
1. When the opponent moves far enough away- Charge
2. Turn quickly- Shield Breaker
3. When they close- Melee
Repeat.
After 2 or 3 cycles, their shields should be red/down- and beaten easily. Recharge shields when necessary.
The Citadel Death Knights are a little tricker- it requires more running around and recharging of shields, but it's not much different.
Barinthos Jul 30th 2009 2:12PM
The only real pain about the DKs at the citadel is the fact that you also get 15 other mobs attacking you because you can't control Charge once it's engaged. So if you get a Lieutenant and a Captain at the same time...might want to just run away or hope someone helps you take them down.

"A side note to Warriors, if you are in Defensive stance, you will have all of your attacks reduced by 10%, switch to Battle Stance before you Joust"
Also for Hunters, do not forget to switch out of Aspect of the Viper.

Man that pissed me off for so long until I figured it out. My main issue now is that occasionally I forget to go back into defensive stance and end up hitting all sorts of wacky abilities until I realize what's going on.
Glaras Jul 30th 2009 2:12PM
I usually Charge first, which will not only cover the distance and remove a shield from your opponent, but the charge doesn't end with impact. You'll blow past the target, still at sprint-speed. I turn in a tight circle and throw Shieldbreaker as soon as I come around to re-face the target. Then close to melee and start busting him up. I rarely lose anymore.
Vandersveldt Jul 30th 2009 2:25PM
This is what I used to do, then I realized you can turn in midair, essentially moving backwards away from your opponent at charge speed. Charge through them, jump, spin and throw a lance, land and have enough charge speed left to get back into melee range.
Edgar V. Camacho Jul 30th 2009 2:14PM
Here are some things I will add that makes these joust go by super fast. No matter what you should always be spamming "Thrust"...no matter what. It is on a separate cooldown then all the rest of your abilities, thus you can get a charge and right when you reach them, hit them with a thrust. Spam thrust with any other ability constantly, almost as if the two abilities are one. Even when you are first talking to them, you should be ready to hit thrust right away for that first hit before charging them.
Next step is to spam buttons 1 and 3 in melee range. As soon as he moves away from you, backup, and you will charge and probably thrust again as well. Now once you pass them on the charge, do a semi circle, this time spamming buttons 1 and 2 until you throw out your shield breaker (you need to get the range just right for this, but taking a charge or shield breaker from them is no big deal as long as you hit them with your shield breaker). Once you hit them with shield breaker, move back into melee range and spam buttons 1 and 4 until your shields are full and move back to spamming 1 and 3 again rinse and repeat. This should keep them below full shields almost the entire time.
You can do the valiants this way without ever healing, and possibly the champions too. Though I prefer to heal after those just in case.
