TurpsterVision: Jousting for Dummies
We can't believe it either – Turpster has been let loose on WoW.com to bring you videos from in and around the World of Warcraft! You've heard him on the WoW Insider Show, and now see him on TurpsterVision right here on WoW.com.
Patch 3.2 brings us many, many great ways for us to get our hands on Champions Seals along with some awesome things to spend them on! One of the easiest ways to get your hands on some of these new items is by completing the daily quests offered up in Ice Crown at the Argent Tournament. Now the Tournament has been around for quite some time now, but loads of people have told me that they either haven't taken part in it or just don't know how to Joust. If you are a Jousting n00b then this TurpsterVision is for you.
When you equip your lance and mount up on to your valiant steed your action bar will display the following relevant skills:

In a nutshell, this is how I choose to Joust. This isn't the only way, this isn't even the best way (Get friends to DPS your NPC down while you just break his Defend) but it is a fairly simple way to get started and see what works best for you. A side note to Warriors, if you are in Defensive stance, you will have all of your attacks reduced by 10%, switch to Battle Stance before you Joust -- I always forget.
- It is important to make sure you click the
3 times before each fight to ensure that you have the maximum application of the buff to reduce damage taken by 50%. If you have just come out of a fight remember to hit the
healing your mount back to full health before the duel. - When you talk with the NPC to start the fight, make sure you are behind them as they will run forward once the fight has started to then turn and begin attacking you.
- When they run forward you should start to walk backwards while spamming
and then
when it is avalible. - Now you are in melee range and should start to spam
. If you have had any of your stacks of Defend removed you should reapply them with
as soon as possible. - Your opponent will try to break away from you and run to range to then Charge back in towards you. You have a few options here, you can run with them spamming
but they will just have the opportunity to stack more Defends since you are not breaking their Defend with any skills. Instead I like to stay at range, using
as they run away and then mash
as soon as it is available. This can be tricky if you get trapped waiting on cooldowns due to a late Defend refresh. If you don't think you have time for both the Shield Breaker and the Charge, just go with the Charge to remove a stack of defend and while at the same time closing down the range so that your opponent can't do much damage to you.

I loved the gold selling adds at the beginning from google.ads at the bottom of the video.
Daniel Jul 30th 2009 2:49PM
yes, I noticed that too. Very disappointing so I stopped watching.
impurezero Jul 30th 2009 3:20PM
Daniel,
Why must someone always make this stupid complaint?
You do understand that Google places those ads based on perceived relevence to this website's content, right? Wow.com didn't pick that ad (and likely wishes that something more legitimate would show up because that would get them more clickthrough income...wow.com readers already know not to buy gold). You're seriously going to stop watching the video over something an outside company chose to display?
Do you stop watching a tv show everytime a commercial comes on that you don't like? Do you refuse to ride buses if the poster on the side isn't good enough for you?
What am I talking about? You probably don't watch TV or ride buses. That would take away from the time you spend yelling at kids to get off your lawn.
Daniel Jul 30th 2009 3:54PM
Oh come off of it. And why does someone always respond with the same lame old justification every time. It's crap and a lie and you know it. No one forces anyone to put an add on their site. No one forces anyone to run Google ads. If you know that it's a possibility that there are gold sellers that are gonna pop up, don't use that ad service. period.
Some web sites have more than ethics than others that's all. There are more ad services than just Google.
The answer to all you questions are yes. You have the freedom to chose. So does the show maker. So does Wow.com. To pretend some how or another that Google or technology has robbed people of freedom of choice is bogus.
Grow up and stop justifying that which is wrong. Have some moral man and not sell your soul to the almighty $$$$
Mordockk Jul 30th 2009 4:07PM
@daniel
without that $$$ there wouldnt be a wow.com and therefore no comment section for you to make your same old complaint that is responded by the same old justification for you to respond about how ur sick of the response to your response?
seriously gtfo

"No one forces anyone to put an add on their site."
Actually, yeah...you and I do. We run up their bandwidth costs by visiting. We expect these people to put out content on a daily basis. I suppose you think everything YOU want should just be freely given to you. But then again...in this case, IT FRICKIN' IS! It's absolutely free for you to come here and participate in everything that is here. Unfortunately, it costs the people who run the site...MONEY!
For you to imply that ads should simply not exist here (which would mean losing money and eventually shutting down wow.com) because you dislike the act of "not clicking them" is the most asinine thing I've ever seen anyone say.
As for why people show up with the same argument against your stupidity each time:
Try going on to a forum week after week and suggesting that the sky is indeed green. If each time someone responds that the sky is actually blue, it's not because they need to "come off it." It's because you need to stop being so wrong.
Gazareth Jul 31st 2009 6:29AM
Daniel stop being so sensitive about such trivial matters. It is depressing that people like you exist.
Gemini Jul 30th 2009 2:22PM
Here is my strat:
Get 3 stacks before the fight (obviously). As soon as you have started the fight, get off a melee hit before your challenger can charge off, then hit him with a charge/melee combo. THIS IS KEY. Every time you charge them, you should also be getting off a melee hit. They are on separate CDs, so there is no reason you should not be meleeing every single time you charge. Once you break ranks with them, get off 2 shieldbreakers while strafe-running away. If you angle yourself right you should be running almost directly away from your opponent while still having him in front of you. Once charge's CD is up, do another charge/melee, then run back out for the 2 shieldbreakers. Rinse, repeat. I haven't lost a joust in months except the ones that I was lagging on.
AishaLove Jul 30th 2009 2:24PM
My problem is not that I don't know how to joust, it's that jousting is way to hard for me (read that for me personally), and I don't have friends that can be there with me enough to do it the cheater's way.
Tebla Jul 30th 2009 3:06PM
I was so frustrated when I started jousting. I had problems with the Valiants and the the Champions. I started the tournament as a keyboard turner and have completely changed my style of playing.
The mounts take forever to turn. That was my main problem. I have found that with jumping and mouse turning at the same time, I can almost do an instant 180.
So, like Eisenzwerg laid out. Charge (jump and turn with the mouse), break, thrust. Repeat.
I don't know if I was just a Johnny come lately with the mouse turning and it is something that the rest of you guys knew about (and why I haven't seen it mentioned in these posts), but it totally changed, bot only how I do the AT daillies, but I know it has made me a better player overall.
Oh btw, I did it the 'cheating' way yesterday for the first time and, honestly, I can do it faster solo, since I only have to do it once.
Netherscourge Jul 30th 2009 2:25PM
Good tutorial.
Unfortunately, I hate jousting in the Tournament area. It's really slow and takes forever to kill your NPC opponent. I'm nto saying it's hard, but it's a real pain chasing after them, reapplying the shield, spamming the attack button... It's actually pretty awful.
The stuff down in front of Icecrown Citadel isn't as bad because you can group up with other people and knock those out pretty fast.
But the jousting in the tournament grounds is horribly boring. It actually feels like a GRIND.
I don't even bother with them anymore. I just do the other dailies and get our of their with a couple seals and some gold.
IMO - Jousting is too slow, too boring and takes forever to finish.
Nonetheless, good tutorial :)
Scott Jul 30th 2009 2:32PM
At first, jousting can be very frustrating as one's not familiar with the range of attacks while keeping the shield stacked. Once you find a procedure that works in downing them while taking little damage, winning seven duels to complete both dailies takes no more than five minutes.
jfofla Jul 30th 2009 2:48PM
If you follow some of the instructions here, you can easily do all four daily jousts in five minutes.
If five minutes is way too boring for you, then take my advice and never raid.
Gardoch Jul 30th 2009 4:44PM
Yes, jousting is fast easy gold and seals, but that doesn't mean that it is fun.
Gearing up a fresh 80 alt and maintaining my main I was trying to do the dailies everyday, however, I have burned myself out on them after getting my tanking axe on my pally. They just aren't any fun. I haven't looked at the new dailies yet to see if I'm going to finish up the Crusader title for the other dailies. All signs point to no right now.
The tournament sucks.

I've never realized before just how dashingly handsome Turpster is.
I'd like to see him in a black neck tie and a black speedo for his next video... well, I guess he can work up to that. At least a cut-off tee and some ripped off sleeves.
Thanks. Keep em coming, SEXAH!
Frank Jul 30th 2009 3:42PM
/agreed. he's adorkable.
Aurix Jul 30th 2009 4:48PM
^This.
Hanak Jul 31st 2009 12:57PM
LOL
priceless ^^
Starlin Jul 30th 2009 2:43PM
The best tip I heard was this:
Spam Thrust while you are charging to get in an extra melee attack. Makes a load of difference.
cateye Jul 30th 2009 2:56PM
Jousting has to be the most booooooorrrrriinnggg thing in the world.../YAAAWWWWWNNNNN
I can't even stay interested long enough to learn the technique, which has been explained ad infinitum here and elsewhere--even though I'd love the little pets, omg, the pain of the grind.
If this is what's coming in 3.2, I'll just keep working on Yogg
