WoW and its partners at Gen Con 2009
Gen Con Indy 2009 is just around the corner (it's the weekend before BlizzCon), and if you're headed out for the "best four days in gaming," keep an eye out there for some of this Warcraft stuff. Blizzard won't actually be there, as far as we know (it's more of a convention for board games and roleplaying than video games), but lots of their partners will. Upper Deck will probably have the biggest presence -- both the WoW TCG and the WoW Minis games will have setups where you can sit down and play either one, and they'll be running the Continental Championships as well, where they'll crown some of the best players in the country. And there'll be other tournaments and gameplay for both games going on as well -- the guys from wowtcgscrub.com are organizing a tournament of their own, and Upper Deck will have other ways for you to compete at all levels all weekend long.Fantasy Flight Games, the makers of both World of Warcraft: The Board Game and World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game, will also be in attendance. They haven't announced anything special for the Warcraft games, but they'll likely have them out and playing in at least one demo space. And Warcraft will be there in attendance through the fans as well for sure.
In fact, I'll be there for the first time this year -- my friend and I are going to be checking out the show on Saturday. I have no idea what to expect, but i've heard from a few readers that are going already, so if there's interest, we might try to schedule a WoW.com meetup that evening. So if you're headed for Gen Con this year, keep an eye out for the World of Warcraft there.

I went last year. Was pretty interesting. The costumes were pretty amazing to be sure.
I will probably go again this year. Good way to kill a Saturday. :P

Yeah I think I'll swing down as well to check out whatever WoW stuff there might be.
Auto is dead on, it's great way to kill a Saturday.

Ah, the TCG. I cannot plug this game enough. So much love for this game, and yet it's popularity in my area (Baltimore-DC) is so pitiful.

My company has been setting up at that show for a few years now. While it is more geared toward table-top gaming, there is always a healthy setup of video games there. I played Starcraft 2 at the show about 2 years ago.

I was at Gen Con before TBC was to be released. Blizzard had a large area setup with some stations you could play TBC content. There is actually a decent amount of video game content at Gen Con.

I always hate reading things like this as I'm geographically challened in the South East.
Will Blizzard ever show us some love? It would be great to see them at DragonCon sometime, or even create a second Blizz Con for us East-Coaster.
Have fun at the Con, guys! Wish I could be there!

Don't know if I'll go to GenCon, and in the past month I've quit WoW. But if theres a meet up would be completely down for going. So if you decide to make another post about it. Don't always read all the pages of comments. =)

Probably the best way to hear about a meetup is to follow me on twitter (mikeschramm) or the WoW.com account (WoWInsider). I don't think it would be big enough to do a post here on the site, it'll likely just be me and some readers meeting up at a restaurant.

Ah, GenCon. I used to go to GenCon as a kid when it was held in Milwaukee. Table after Table of AD&D and Steve Jackson games.....

If you're interested in D&D at all, whether or not you've ever played before, you should check out the NAsCraG event. Tell them Lori sent you!

Yay GenCon! Indianapolis basically becomes Geek-central for the whole week...I LOVE it. And yeah, in 2006, Blizzard had a huge bank of computers there with demo's of TBC, and it was always packed. It was one of the coolest things ever, everyone that got a chance to try it was giddy as hell (I was taking pictures of the screen and posting it on my guilds website, lol. We've had Realm meet-ups there, too.) There's always a pretty good eGame area, we've seen previews of pretty much every MMO months and years before release.
Can't wait. And don't forget to check out The Ram brewpub, where all the sports theme stuff gets replaced with gamer stuff. It is awesome! ;)

I've done the 5-day for the last two years, and I've never regretted it. 2007's con saw a huge presence from Blizzard, with them having a large booth in the center of the vendor's hall where you could demo Wrath (Beta at the time) and SC II (Playable, but it was still in early alpha back then). I was most disappointed that they didn't have a booth in the hall last year, and it sounds like they won't have one this year, but I'll still hold out hope... I'd kick a puppy to be able to play SC II again :).

Oh, Gen Con. The busiest eight days of my year (that would be the Best Four Days in Gaming, and the two days of back-breaking labor on either side).
I'd tell you to come by the Paizo booth and meet some more readers, Mike, but we expect to be too busy to breathe most of the time.
And most of the time I'm not in the booth, working, I'll be glad-handing our distributors. So I can't even come to any meetups. Heh.
