The Colosseum: Korgath speaks

Normally, the approach to find an interview for the Colosseum is relatively simple, but filled with some frustrating challenges. I check the SK Arena Rating tools, and scan the highest rated teams for that week. I need to keep a special eye out for which teams are predominately clustered on one server. I try to rotate servers each week, so that we're getting decent representation across the player group. (We're trying, anyway. With a single interview each week, it'll take a long time to get someone from each server.)

I then create a Death Knight, kill a few dudes for some mailing cash, and haul my happy kiester off to the nearest mailbox. I then mail almost every person on that server who is in the Top 100. (I encourage them to reply to my WoW.com address, so that there's no risk of confusing me for a scam.) I regularly max out the allowable number of in-game mails a character can send. For every 35 to 50 in-game mails I send, I usually hear back from one person.

However, while canvassing the server Korgath the other week, I was happy to see many more than one person responded. This was exciting news, because it meant we could do something a little different. I fired all of these excellent Arena players the usual questions, with hopes that we could feature all of them in one shot. I wasn't disappointed, and I hope you won't be either.

It all begins behind the cut.

Bobsauce the Gladiator is the Shaman on a top-rated 3v3 team titled As Bad as Efficacy. Comprised of a Hunter, a Shaman, and a Paladin, this 3v3 team is the 7th rated team on the Vengeance server. While Bobsauce's interview was short, that makes for a pretty quick and easy read.

WoW.com: Who are your teammates right now? What's the general plan behind your composition? What challenges does your team have? How do you prefer to run your comp?

Bobsauce: My teammates are currently Loincloth and Covaz in 3v3. In 5v5, however, my teammates are Nientonsoh, Rommadin, Digg, and Shplade.

WoW.com: What's your opening strategy? What do you like to do as soon as the gate opens?

Bobsauce: Typically in 3v3, when the gates open, my Hunter lays a trap and we play off it. In 5v5, however, it's typically just a zerg.

WoW.com: Which mods do you use -- how have you customized your screen?

Bobsauce: I use Bartender, Gladius, Xperl, Quartz, and Scrolling Combat Text.

WoW.com: How do you work out target designation? (Does someone call it out, or is everyone on their own to figure it out?)

Bobsauce: I tend to call all targets, unless my partner really knows he can hurt a different target. In that case, he will then tend to call that target out (i.e still hitting rogue).

WoW.com: How do you schedule your playtime? Do you try and work during "good times to queue?" Is this different now than in previous seasons?

Bobsauce: We queue when we know there is a team to farm with high MMR. Like Tugget, for example, otherwise we just queue when everyone's online.

WoW.com: What's been the biggest change in your strategy between each bracket of ratings? (1500s, 1600s) Is there a big change for this season?

Bobsauce: There really is little change as the rating goes up. The teams get better and you adjust to a somewhat more defensive game play.

WoW.com: What signals to you that you need to radically change strategy midmatch? (And how do you accomplish that change?)

Bobsauce: Things that change strategy are if players use defensive cooldowns at odd times.

WoW.com: What are you trying to improve?

Bobsauce: There isn't much more to improve on, based on the fact that I run an Elemental Shaman comp in 3v3 that doesn't seem to have #1 potential. My 5v5 team simply needs to play games.
