Breakfast Topic: I rolled a Belf, and I think I liked it
I've never been a fan of Blood Elves. My dislike of them goes back to the days of the Burning Crusade beta, when the word was they were beefed up to appeal to notions of masculinity. (Uh huh, you heard me: the boys playing Blood Elves wanted their men beefy and all twinkie to satisfy them. I'll just leave that repression thought alone.) Nonetheless, that impromptu steroid injection just set me off on the wrong foot with the Sindorei. And then my initial dislike for Belfdom found a quick reaffirmation when I saw Silvermoon for the first time. Everything's so . . . posh and pretty. Luxurious color, rich fabric, and cushions. I've been an Ironforge man all my life. We don't do cushions! Cushions are for namby pamby elfs! And they have brooms! And those brooms magically clean things!
Yes, gentle reader, I'm aware that one part of my brain was rebelling against the beefy-ization of Belfs because of gender assumptions, while at the same time the other part of my brain railed against Belfs for being "namby pamby."
So, yeah. Blood Elves. Never been a fan.
And then, recently, for some hare-brained reason, I rolled a Death Knight. I wanted to finally give those guys a whirl, and see what it was like on the other side of Death Grip. Smirking at myself for my cleverness, I made the DK a Blood Elf. I gave him a bouncy little top knot, and I went off to play the starting quests.
It didn't take long to knock out the quests, and (for the first time) I accepted the portal to Orgrimmar. Still in that tentative exploration phase, nervous about myself and the people around me, unsure of what I was doing but so, so eager to try . . . I queued for Warsong Gulch.
And it was wonderful. I laughed, I gasped for excitement, my breath caught in my throat. In my very first match, the Horde achieved Warsong Perfection. Alliance fell at my feet as I moved like a scythe slicing through wheat. Every time a Paladin would try and heal near me, I would literally say "LOL" as I let an Arcane Torrent rip. It was glorious.
And now, I have a Belf. A Belf Death Knight, no less. I can't hide my dirty little shame. But, tonight when I get home . . . I'll log in again.
And so, to you, have you ever tried the other side? Perhaps tentatively reached across the faction gap, and taste what it's like over there? Or, perhaps, you switch back and forth readily -- do you have tips for those of trying it out for the first time?

I don't think I could ever bring myself to play an alliance character. They're just so.... I don't know the word for it.
Spazmoose Aug 3rd 2009 2:39PM
The word you are looking for is "AWESOME"!
Deathgodryuk Aug 3rd 2009 3:21PM
I believe Lame or Boring is the word you were looking for.
Letharginator Aug 3rd 2009 5:30PM
Ideologically, I'm a horde man, but I play alliance to play with friends. I think the word you were searching for was 'vanilla'. But I think Blizzard was aware of this when they choose the BC races. Now I can play an awesome Draenei, and former alliance can pick a nice safe blood elf. So that's my advice to Horde trying out alliance.
Step 1) Pick Draenei
Step 2) pick a lore heavy class like paladin or shaman
Step 3) Enjoy being the coolest thing the alliance has to offer
Why people play humans for non RP is beyond me. I already am human. I can play that whenever I want. I'd like a turn at being a space goat please.

the word for it...
(though it's a statement and not a single word)
is...
Their arms are funny-looking.
The males' arms are so out of proportion compared to their bodies that it is simply unbearable to look at. It looks like something from Robot Chicken, like someone broke the arms of an original GI Joe doll and then glued the arms of the Hulk on to it.
I'm speaking of course of Night Elves and Humans (and maybe Draenai), because... well... gnomes... uh... yeah... right... sure...
I've tried and tried to play my Night Elf rogue i rolled, but ... his arms... are so distracting...
(oh, yeah, and they often wear very goofy looking short pants -- at least, in the lower levels they do)

Blood Elves are fun to play and fun to RP, no matter how you swing it.
And yes, the 'Oh no, BE males don't look like hulked-out mini orcs, better beef them up or someone's masculinity might feel threatened' thing irritated me too.

What I find more irritating now are the jokes that there are no male blood elves.. Sure, the current male blood elves are sufficiently "metrosexual" that it is funny, but for petes sake they are OBVIOUSLY male. They have muscles, their shoulders are gigantic like all the other guys in the game.. give me a break. The joke of blood elf males is that they're male but vain.
Glaras Aug 3rd 2009 10:20AM
Well, it would help if one of their "jokes" was not "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?" That's kinda nauseating regardless of how you roll.
Mitawa Aug 3rd 2009 12:47PM
Oh sure, when everyone is standing around in their underwear you can tell the elves are male, but to be honest... I frequently mistake male elves for female elves once you get them into armor.
Somehow the female animations seem more "butch" than the male's...
*shrug*

@Glaras
The "hot like me" joke is only disgusting if you're a homophobe and have zero sense of humor or pop culture reference. :)
Graham Aug 3rd 2009 3:13PM
I wish that my girlfriend was hot like a bloodelf. I'm not a homophobe and I'm not in denial, and I'm not afraid to say it when someone is better-looking than I am, so I'll say it loud: Blood Elves are hot. Both genders.
And I am okay with cushions.
But to answer the question, I have tried horde several times, but I can never keep going with it. I think it's probably because I love my Alliance guild so much. I also like the unity that the Alliance has. There are no "WTF Races" that just seem tacked on, like the Undead and the Blood Elves. (Why are they Horde again? Convenience? Oh...well that's silly.) You could say that the Draenei are a little random, but I love their science-fiction/ high-fantasy theme that they have. I have two female Draenei that I enjoy playing very much, and sometimes I go to the Auction House in the Exodar just because I love that city.
The Horde are generally too ugly and dirty for me. Call me weird, but clean is good. I know that the Blood Elves have magic cleaning brooms, and I applaud them for that (I have some Belf characters), but seriously, send those brooms to Orgrimmar. Of course, the Orcs wouldn't like that because Orgrimmar is MEANT to feel a little dirty. I guess if I had to choose between being Bobathin the Noble, sitting comfortably in my Stormwind inn, with the sound of mounts on the cobblestone in my ears and people laughing and having a good time, or being Rottsworth the Undead, sitting in my coffin in the Undercity, wondering when Sylvanas was going to leave the horde, and not being able to travel to Thunder Bluff because the Tauren would keep me in that cave, I would always go back to being Bobathin the Noble.

Alliance is the word.
cynmoon Aug 3rd 2009 1:51PM
No sir, Bird is the word. Everybody knows that the Bird is the word.
ziggler Aug 3rd 2009 8:09AM
started as a night elf hunter (shame) and quickly realized i was an undead kind of guy, and will never go back to alliance :)
(btw will never ever ever play a paladin of any race or spec & will never ever ever make another blood elf, would pay good money to change the only one i have to undead.)
Mickthathick Aug 3rd 2009 6:34PM
Pallys rock mate, your close-mindedness is causing you to miss out on a lot of fun.
Colin Aug 3rd 2009 8:11AM
i have yet to play a race on the alliance side that i like. they all look so.. stupid.
Delphinus Aug 3rd 2009 2:49PM
I play Horde, but how could you think alliance looks "stupid" when you play horde, let me explain:
Trolls - Lizard-like Jamaicans
Taurens - Cows
Orcs - Green
Undead - Bones peeking out
Belfs - umm, ok, nothing really weird about them, pink I guess
Alliance:
Humans - humans
Dwarfs - Squat, fat humans
Gnomes - shorter humans
Night-elfs - if you accept Belfs, normal enough, look like humans, blue
Draenei - ok, you got me here, huge smurfs with double knees and tentacles, eww...
The way i see it, there are 4 generally normal looking (although proportionally wrong) looking humanoids for Alliance, and for the Horde: a variety of amphibians, grazing mammals, aliens, and 1.5 humanoid races.
Horde: 4 "stupid" looking races, 1 pink
Alliance: 4 Human-like races, 1 squid
which has more wierd looking races? what do you think
MusedMoose Aug 3rd 2009 8:12AM
No comment about the BE buffing, as anything I say would probably start flames. I will say, though, that the BE males' forward-leaning running animation makes me laugh so hard that I can't play one.
More on-topic, though, I play both Alliance and Horde, and I like both sides. The Alliance has that "classic fantasy" thing going on for it (except for maybe the Draenei, but they have the "weird science fantasy" thing, and I'm good with that too), while the Horde early quests make it pretty clear that they consider themselves survivors, which is also something I like.
I honestly don't understand sticking to one faction and never playing the other, as it seems like deliberately missing out on a huge chunk of the game. I can understand faction pride, but there are limits. *shrug*

/agreed
i played allies from day one because my friend said he would always be online so we could quest and stuff but quickly found out he wouldnt be...then one day when our server was down i decided i'd try a horde toon....i made a belf pally just because thats the only pally race (obvious) and i liked it....then a few months later i was hacked and decided theres no point me staying on this server ill go to the horde and reroll...so now i play both sides when im bored...
thebvp Aug 3rd 2009 12:07PM
I've played Horde since launch and probably always will. While I agree with you that I'm missing out, I don't like to split up my efforts. For this reason, all of my characters are also on the same server, except for the random 22 Ally hunter I have when the server goes down.
I'd love to experience more of the Alliance side of things, lore-wise (the Onyxia attunement chain always sounded amazing), but I doubt I ever will.
