Breakfast Topic: I rolled a Belf, and I think I liked it
I've never been a fan of Blood Elves. My dislike of them goes back to the days of the Burning Crusade beta, when the word was they were beefed up to appeal to notions of masculinity. (Uh huh, you heard me: the boys playing Blood Elves wanted their men beefy and all twinkie to satisfy them. I'll just leave that repression thought alone.) Nonetheless, that impromptu steroid injection just set me off on the wrong foot with the Sindorei. And then my initial dislike for Belfdom found a quick reaffirmation when I saw Silvermoon for the first time. Everything's so . . . posh and pretty. Luxurious color, rich fabric, and cushions. I've been an Ironforge man all my life. We don't do cushions! Cushions are for namby pamby elfs! And they have brooms! And those brooms magically clean things!
Yes, gentle reader, I'm aware that one part of my brain was rebelling against the beefy-ization of Belfs because of gender assumptions, while at the same time the other part of my brain railed against Belfs for being "namby pamby."
So, yeah. Blood Elves. Never been a fan.
And then, recently, for some hare-brained reason, I rolled a Death Knight. I wanted to finally give those guys a whirl, and see what it was like on the other side of Death Grip. Smirking at myself for my cleverness, I made the DK a Blood Elf. I gave him a bouncy little top knot, and I went off to play the starting quests.
It didn't take long to knock out the quests, and (for the first time) I accepted the portal to Orgrimmar. Still in that tentative exploration phase, nervous about myself and the people around me, unsure of what I was doing but so, so eager to try . . . I queued for Warsong Gulch.
And it was wonderful. I laughed, I gasped for excitement, my breath caught in my throat. In my very first match, the Horde achieved Warsong Perfection. Alliance fell at my feet as I moved like a scythe slicing through wheat. Every time a Paladin would try and heal near me, I would literally say "LOL" as I let an Arcane Torrent rip. It was glorious.
And now, I have a Belf. A Belf Death Knight, no less. I can't hide my dirty little shame. But, tonight when I get home . . . I'll log in again.
And so, to you, have you ever tried the other side? Perhaps tentatively reached across the faction gap, and taste what it's like over there? Or, perhaps, you switch back and forth readily -- do you have tips for those of trying it out for the first time?

I started out Alliance but couldn't stand the people on the server i tried, they seemed like a bunch of little kids, so i went horde and really liked the people.
At first, I was troll (a hunter), then BE for the pally. Leveled both to max but really got sick of them. Then went Undead, then Tauren (love both of them) and eventually tried a BE mage. Surprisingly I found I liked playing the mage.
I eventually tried alliance again however I find two of the races unbelievably irritating. Can't stand draenei and the whole space goat thing, and night elves I just want to beat with a stick with their whole 'we're more superior' thing (plus I love tauren's and they got screwed over bad by night elves). Human's are okay and gnomes are certainly goofy and that's always appealing, but I gotta say I really like dwarves. I love that they are sort of the WoW party animals, always looking for a good pint and a fight.
I really am horde through and through, but i do play my little dwarf every once in a while cause (a) it's nice for a change, and (b) it's good to get to know the lore from the alliance stand point.

oh, forgot to say that I have a couple of orcs that i really like too. started playing them after reading 'Rise of the Horde' and 'Lord of the Clans'

Totally agree here. :)
I started out with a NElf warrior, found it kinda 'eh', then rolled a BElf hunter. Ding! Love to play him. I eventually rolled a (female) gnome warrior, and adore playing her too. She's just so cutely tough. And now I split my time between my warrior and hunter, Alliance and Horde. They're both so wonderful to play for many different reason's, mostly the ones MusedMoose stated, that I feel kind of startled when I run into someone who is staunchly one or the other.
Though I do have to say, Alliance definitely has one thing going for them. No Barren's Chat. -_-;

I would agree if I wasn't so freaking pissed off about the Forsaken. I'd be the first to be sympathetic to their plight if they, as a group, they were bent on wiping out all life. If Sylvanas actually lead them to something other than vengeance, I'd be her greatest advocate. As it stands, I just want to give her the clean death she deserved.
I LOVE and I mean LOVE Thrall but Bizz has essentially castrated him and his ideals for the sake of amping up a pointless conflict. I'd love to play a Tauren but I'd have to spit on every forsaken I'd see in the cities just to have an ounce of integrity. I feel almost the same about the Belfs. Those are two groups that are rotting the Horde from the inside and I won't be part of it.
Can I please join a third faction? Thrall-Jaina, Argent Crusade? PLEASE!!

Trolls. They look stupid.
JamieG Aug 3rd 2009 8:39AM
This troll looks stupid, amirite? 8D
Dharmabhum Aug 3rd 2009 11:27AM
OOh burn! Trolls 4tw btw, they're pretty much my favorite race in WoW because I love their personality and voice and demeanor. Yah mahn!!
Tim Aug 3rd 2009 1:24PM
trolls are awesome and they were apart of the hord in warcraft 2. BELF weren't. Trolls are among the least played races while BELFs are everywhere. It is a little annoying that the hord has super Caucasian, vain, pretty boys running around everywhere.
Squoze Aug 3rd 2009 2:19PM
Not trolling. They look so much worse than belfs when they run, slouch, have bad tusks, bad hair, I could go on. I agree with you on good voice etc, but that means nothing to someone who doesn't normally have sound on.

I just rerolled on the other side of my PvE server. Mostly because the top-end raiders there are... a lot nicer.
BooMsx Aug 3rd 2009 8:15AM
I rolled gnome rogue (4 years of horde only playing) and it was FUN pissing off everyone i set my sight on and making fun of everyone else (not actually proud of all that but it was amusing for a while) ^_^
Dreyja Aug 3rd 2009 4:04PM
ugh... so that's why people hate gnomes so much. Thanks for that.
Zallgrin Aug 4th 2009 7:18AM
Personally, I have no taboos in terms of playing. But there are some races, that I refuse to play, not because of prejudices, but because of their animations, models or voices. Some of them are plain annoying, or just simply not as good as the ones of my beloved Undead female.
I don't play Blood elves, because...
a. I hate their buildings and the blue cushions.
b. The Blood elf females are even more anorexic than the Undead. It's scary.
RetadinMan Aug 3rd 2009 8:19AM
I have an Undead Warrior. Undead and Trolls are the only bearable Horde races. Though, Eversong is a beautiful zone.

Belfs have a traumatic history, they've been betrayed and they're addicts with a mean streak. Their leitmotif is one of somber, deep, melancholic cello. You think they're effeminate? If you believe your sexuality is in any way questioned by not having a toon close to actual beasthood, then of course they're not for you (whereas a skilled psychologist might be), but have you checked their Alliance counterpart? Nelfs jump on the spot! What's that about? Secondly, their leitmotif is haunted by excessive emo choir. Their lines are awful ... "Elune guide you" while the music goes "ahhhhh ahhhhhhha ahhhhh" ... compare that to "We WILL have justice" and "The reckoning is at hand." In short, Belfs are hardly the ones playing for the other team. On a diffferent note, I've always wondered about people who choose humans as their race. You have a choice of 10 different races with interesting stories ... among which are some really fascinating ones such as the Forsaken or the Draenei ... and yet you opt for Humans. Innovative.
Darkfreak Aug 3rd 2009 9:04AM
For me, its just because of the free PvP trinket.
Malkavos Aug 3rd 2009 9:11AM
The Humans have a cool storyline, too. *gasp*
If *everybody* tries to be different, we all end up being the same.

Diplomacy. My main is my main, I wouldn't consider starting over, but if I for some reason wanted to reroll a new character with any thought to the endgame or achievements I'd be very attracted to the ability to make all reputation grinds go 10 percent faster. Even more so back in vanilla and BC.
That, and playing an everyman in a fantasy world is kind of the whole point. Hobbits are such freakish creatures that everyone forgets they come from the Shire, an absurdly idyllic analogue for rural England. That same exact backstory wouldn't work in WoW what with all the warcraft going on, but being a Mad Max-type figure in a post-apocalyptic world (quasi-apocalyptic? Near-apocalyptic?) is also very human.
impurezero Aug 3rd 2009 10:03AM
You're totally right. Why would anyone play a human? Furthermore, why would anyone watch a movie or a play? Why would someone watch a tv show or read a book? 99% of those things are filled with...ew...HUMANS! The only creative stories are those that include nothing but beasts and monsters. You know, like Disney movies and whatnot.
Let's face it...I don't care if you're running through dungeons, facing down giant creatures with swords and magic, exploring a whole new world...the only thing that matters is the shape of the character you're looking at.
So, if you picked a "human"...even if it doesn't look anything like you...even if it has superpowers that I'm pretty sure you don't have...you obviously lack some kind of creativity. Because your creativity is defined by picking a race that fits the standard cliche of "fantasy."

I play alliance and I HATE THE HUMANS...
I know, I know the night elves are the source of all evil and the dwarves spend countless dwarven lifetimes bickering with each other, but I have always hated the thought of playing a human.
Humans didn't always have the free PVP trinket, but the diplomacy is very sexy. I'm not appalled by the availibility of humans, but am thrown by the overwhelming number (http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php) of players who choose to play them if they play Alliance.
It's not just the diplomacy when the night elf avoidance racials are great for rogues and warriors, or the gnome intel racials are great for locks and mages.
I do find it hilarious that people who play humans or blood elves (and some night elves) feel they almost always have to justify their decision with some game mechanic. I play a dwarf cause I like them. I play gnomes because I like them. I don't play a human because I don't like them. Simple as that.
