Breakfast Topic: I rolled a Belf, and I think I liked it
I've never been a fan of Blood Elves. My dislike of them goes back to the days of the Burning Crusade beta, when the word was they were beefed up to appeal to notions of masculinity. (Uh huh, you heard me: the boys playing Blood Elves wanted their men beefy and all twinkie to satisfy them. I'll just leave that repression thought alone.) Nonetheless, that impromptu steroid injection just set me off on the wrong foot with the Sindorei. And then my initial dislike for Belfdom found a quick reaffirmation when I saw Silvermoon for the first time. Everything's so . . . posh and pretty. Luxurious color, rich fabric, and cushions. I've been an Ironforge man all my life. We don't do cushions! Cushions are for namby pamby elfs! And they have brooms! And those brooms magically clean things!
Yes, gentle reader, I'm aware that one part of my brain was rebelling against the beefy-ization of Belfs because of gender assumptions, while at the same time the other part of my brain railed against Belfs for being "namby pamby."
So, yeah. Blood Elves. Never been a fan.
And then, recently, for some hare-brained reason, I rolled a Death Knight. I wanted to finally give those guys a whirl, and see what it was like on the other side of Death Grip. Smirking at myself for my cleverness, I made the DK a Blood Elf. I gave him a bouncy little top knot, and I went off to play the starting quests.
It didn't take long to knock out the quests, and (for the first time) I accepted the portal to Orgrimmar. Still in that tentative exploration phase, nervous about myself and the people around me, unsure of what I was doing but so, so eager to try . . . I queued for Warsong Gulch.
And it was wonderful. I laughed, I gasped for excitement, my breath caught in my throat. In my very first match, the Horde achieved Warsong Perfection. Alliance fell at my feet as I moved like a scythe slicing through wheat. Every time a Paladin would try and heal near me, I would literally say "LOL" as I let an Arcane Torrent rip. It was glorious.
And now, I have a Belf. A Belf Death Knight, no less. I can't hide my dirty little shame. But, tonight when I get home . . . I'll log in again.
And so, to you, have you ever tried the other side? Perhaps tentatively reached across the faction gap, and taste what it's like over there? Or, perhaps, you switch back and forth readily -- do you have tips for those of trying it out for the first time?

My favorite race is hands-down Draenei, so I primarily play Alliance. I haven't really gotten into a Horde character since I don't feel like playing up another character without the financial support of a highbie, though if I did it would likely be Blood Elf or Orc.
Honestly, I love WoW, but there are so few races that I enjoy playing as (Draenei and Blood Elf favorites, though I would prefer if male BE wasn't buffed up, while Gnome/Night Elf/Orc hold a tied and distanct third). Likely if Worgen/Goblin are indeed new races, I can't see myself enjoying playing Goblin (I never did much like the race), and I am a little mixed on Worgen.
SarahTheGnome Aug 3rd 2009 9:51AM
Did people honestly downrate this person just because he favours draenei? Really?
Bronwyn Aug 3rd 2009 10:12AM
I feel you on this. I would play my ally characters a lot more if I had the support of a high level. Also WTB xfaction/server heirlooms!
That being said, it has helped enormously getting my Dranny DK up to lvl 63- she can mine thorium to make money when I need it, so I'm not hurting *Too* bad for money.
crusherkid Aug 3rd 2009 10:18AM
I disagree on that. While most people seem to prefer the worgen idea, if the goblin's were made for the horde it wouldn't be inconceivable for me to swap over just for the goblins. I like the whole techno race thing and they have that with the gnomes but they just refuse to give the gnomes some freaking lore :(

I was afraid of starting over with no money too. Then, I found a guy on my server with both a high levl ally and horde, and got him to give me 200g on my new Nelf Druid in exchange for 200g horde-side.

I have a 42 lvl draenei hunter, and she rocks
It's just too funny seen her run :D and my spider make her look cooler... IMO :P
I like both sides, but I play alliance because my friends play it
I always wanted to play a tauren, so one day I rolled one in other server, and I like her very much
Pity she can't get benefits from my main, but she takes care of herself very well :)

I've been a Horde player for life, but I am considering to give the Alliance a chance...
...the day they get Worgen 8)
*runs and hides!*

It would be awful if Alliance got Worgen
the one reason: Greymane Wall
option 1 Alli Worgen, based in Gilneas. when they hit 20 they come out to Silverpine, and insta-ganked by an army of 80+s sitting outside
option 2 Gilneas is a Raid Zone the Horde doesn't need to lose another chunk of one of their lvl 20 zones to the endgame, and there are class specific quests that happen there that will be super difficult if you get PvP flagged upon getting close enough to target the Betrayers
option 3 horde worgen, based in Gilneas. no silverpine problems, no massive re-writing of Hillsbrad, and the Alliance could use another short race.
Roki Aug 3rd 2009 12:46PM
@Sven
Nowhere in Lore does it Mention anything about Worgen in Gilneas.
So no need to worry about getting ganked in silverpine :)
Dreyja Aug 3rd 2009 4:08PM
@ Sven. ;) Awhh.... come on. We need a fuzzy race!!! I'm jealous that Hordies have the Taurens, whom I LOVE but can't talk to. :)
Kaawn Aug 3rd 2009 8:30AM
I have 80s on both sides, all of which are great fun.
And I discovered very early on that there are the same amount of r-tards stealing nodes and kills on both sides, along with good and bad raiders.
I do have to giggle though when I'm on one of my Alliance toons and am in a group without a Pally and see them crying about no pally buffs. I say to myself, "I remember when...".
Now if I could just stop running into the wrong cities!

Both my mains are BEs. I have heard the various badmouthings about them, but honestly things its pretty silly. Its a fantasy rpg.. Elves are par for the course and NEs don't look like the dragonlance type I have always liked.
As for "the other side", I started out as a Human Mage.. tried a Drainei Shama.. a NE Druid.. couldn't get into it much. On a whim I tried a BE Warlock and Mage and haven't gone back. Horde is much more my taste. BE, Orc and Undead are the three Horde races I like most. Tuaren are ok, but I dislike Trolls.
Arcticwolf Aug 3rd 2009 8:58AM
I've got 2 Belf 80's and am working on my 3rd. Started WoW as a Nelf druid and it's still only lvl 50. Tried every Alliance race (pre BC) and class and I didn't find one I liked. Got a Undead warlock to 40 before BC came out and since than I've been a Belf man. Love their starting quests and have no issues with what other people (read: Tards) think of me.
A Friend Aug 3rd 2009 8:34AM
I Tryed playing them once, even got to level 33 but i couldt take it any more after that, they simply are too evil. i mean come on, the undeads are atleast honest about their corruption and egocentric way of life, the bloodselfs are not being honest about what they are, not even to themselfs and on the capital question i think Silvermoon looks like a giant birthday cake.
Sorry, i cant play a race that gives me that many moral issues... and yes i RP... and play a Nelf Treehugger
Dreyja Aug 3rd 2009 4:13PM
/high five.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Why do people get down on others for actually bringing an ethic with them into the game. If we all played with a bit more morality it would be a better game and douchie ganking bastards would be the minority.
Celamorne Aug 3rd 2009 8:35AM
I've played Horde before, and putting aside the skill issue associated in PvP, there is just something I love about slamming down an Orc or Tauren. Besides, I can't stand the look of a Tauren druid, what with all the horns being everywhere. I tried a shammy once as a Tauren, but still got nothin.
Anyway, none of the Horde look normal, save for the BE's and being a Night Elf fan myself and them being the long deviated race of Night Elves, I had my reservations. Then when I saw how...feminine they were, my disdain for Horde only grew. To each his (or her) own, I suppose.
Ironically enough, if I were to go to Horde, I would be forced to create a BE, because it would be the only skin I could stand looking at for long periods of time.
Malkavos Aug 3rd 2009 8:36AM
I switched to Alliance after 2 years of being an ally-hating, cannibalizing, only-ever-having-Horde-characters Undead Rogue. Like you, I never thought I would switch, and for similar reasons (those **** humans run like they have something stuck up their.... nevermind). But I found myself at the death knight character creation screen one day... and pretty much didn't look back.
Now that I've played Ally side for a bit, I wonder what my major problem was with them. I spent so much time on horde side hearing how all allies are kids and idiots, while at the same time having to put up with all the kids and idiots on the horde side. There really is no difference. Cool people exist, competent people exist, and the lamers, griefers, gold spammers, and noobs are all there, too, on both sides of the faction gap.
Geranamo Aug 3rd 2009 8:40AM
"Now if I could just stop running into the wrong cities!"
I just made an Alliance character just because I have some free time and figured a level 80 on the other side may come in handy some time (also wanted a character to check out some sweet deals the Alliance AH on my server seems to have). I did something close to what you did. I am leveling in STV decided I wanted to fly somewhere, walked into Grom'gol and right clicked the flight master, I was laughing for a while while laying dead on the floor after a 1 shot :)
Aedilhild Aug 3rd 2009 8:42AM
Who knew this would turn into a food fight?
There are days I prefer to just use Dartol's magic, sit back and watch, all Furbolg-like.
Shardrell Aug 3rd 2009 9:28AM
I must say, this is a beautiful post.
