Priest Q & A: Healers remain indifferent

The Q & A for Priests just came out. The first section had Ghostcrawler cover a brief history and the Blizzard perspective of Priests. We used to be the absolute top of the line healer many years ago. At the present, we have been balanced to become on par with the other healing classes (Druids, Paladins, and Shamans). The crustacean one is bang on when he states that Priests have a wide variety of spells to respond to nearly any situation.
Let's get straight to it then. What do healing Priests have to look forward to?
For one thing, there won't be any mana buff changes. Our pet Shadowfiend will not be providing us with any extra mana. If the Replenishment nerf happens to push us over the edge, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard looks at Shadowfiend later on to increase the return on mana.
One thing that Priests will have to look forward to is that the way the combat log handles absorption mechanics will be improved. Perhaps this will help prove the legitimacy of Discipline Priests in raids. The change made in the patch will show how much damage is left on an absorb effect before and after damage. Addons should be able to figure out that information.
After underscoring the difference between Discipline and Holy, GC continued to move on towards Greater Heal. The biggest liability of Greater Heal is the cast time. A lot of fights involve quick spike damage or unpredictable sources. Flash Heal on its own is fast and strong enough to get players out of the red zone. Even though Flash Heal isn't as efficient as Greater Heal, our mana regeneration is high enough for it to not matter. A healing spell that was directly between Flash Heal and Greater Heal is an intriguing idea. But then would Greater Heal ever be used at all?
Then we moved on to the defensive cooldowns Divine Hymn and Pain Suppression. GC stated that they were considering a mechanic to turn Divine Hymn into a Heroism or Bloodlust type spell in terms of when it can be used. Heroism, for example, uses a 5 minute cooldown on the spell but a 10 minute debuff where players cannot benefit from its effects. I wouldn't mind seeing that. I know I've been in encounters where I could only use Divine Hymn once every second attempt. Would be nice if I was able to use it on every attempt. No improvements will be coming to Pain Suppression. Why? Because "It's really good".
Is there a way to improve Lightwell? It turns out there isn't much that can be done. The onus is on the players to make use of it. Lightwell is a cool spell and I've seen many positive examples of it. The simple fact is that the majority don't utilize it. That's why it continues to get scoffed at.
What about different types of armor buffs? GC provides two just for fun examples like Outer Fire and Inner Shadow to complement Inner Fire. Perhaps Outer Fire increases mana regen rate while Uber Fire increases critical strike chance. That would be another interesting dimension to add. For the time being, we will just have to be content with Inner Fire as it is.
One of the last points concerns our Dispels missing on bosses. It's going to continue happening. Bosses are 3 levels higher than us and since we're not usually packing hit gear, there's going to be a chance that our Dispels will not land.
All in all, the Priest Q & A introduces a few interesting ideas that the development staff have considered. As always, there is nothing concrete in our future for the time being. Nothing given to us but at least there's nothing taken away either.

"What do healing Priests have to look forward to?:
Patch 4.0? :(

Please make the original link from blizzard visible in some way. I'd much rather read it from them first then come back to see opinions
swampsquatch Aug 5th 2009 11:31AM
The link is clearly in the first post regarding the Priest Q&A, along with the entire post copy and pasted to this site, which many of us had already read. Now, we are reading the opinions. Go find it yourself if you haven't yet. A link is on WoW.com, Worldofwarcraft.com, the WoW loader, and the Blue Tracker on MMO-champion.com.

Oh sorry WoW.com... I gave too much credit to Chad assuming you didn't put a link. But of course, the link was in the SECOND WORD of the post and Chad was too stupid to click it himself... My bad...

I agree that another buff. complimenting innfer fire would be very useful. I would like to see a critical strike buff more than anything, i think they should have implemented it in 3.2 instead of nerfering basically every aspect of healing. Priests are, were, and always will be an intense healing class thats made to be that way....hence the name priest. Why shouldnt this class thats so centered on healing be OP compared to other classes such as shaman and druid healers. Druid have mutiple roles in the game as well as Paladins, thats where shamans and priests are nerfed in my opinon, so why not up the anti with some extra healing power. Priests DPS at best is not top notched neither is a shaman (IMO) so these two especially a priest should have some benefit for picking the class instead of wearing the highest armor in the game, haveing DPS capabilities and also being able to heal themselfs and party members....cough cough paladins. I guess my opinon is skewed becasue i love my priest but i just feel they arent represented enough for having the name PRIEST which implies a core healing class.

This isn't quite related, but you made me think of a good "fix" for Lightwell that would also make Holy Priest more viable for PvP - one thing that GC mentioned (shudder).
Replace Lightwell with a new 31 talent:
Squishy-Be-Gone: Gain the ability to train Plate armor.
Isopentane Aug 5th 2009 11:18AM
EXACTLY my point, they gave us NOTHING! NOTHING I TELL YOU!
Somthing anything would have been great, for cripes sake they gaves us nothing to look forward too nothing new except a kick in the ass. I feel like a new buff would have compensated us greatly. IM ANGRY BLIZZ
Alchemistmerlin Aug 5th 2009 11:23AM
*yawn*
Are you new to this game or something? Have you not seen this happen to at least 1 class EVERY Patch. Hell, there was a patch a while back where every class got something awesome except for shaman...who got a new icon for stormstrike.
Get over it, this is how the game works. If you're not enjoying the class, reroll, it only takes a day and a half to get to 80 now anyway.

Heh. How to improve Lightwell? Make it work like the Argent Priestess's one in Trial of the Champion. For a crew that can't seem to figure out how to make Lightwell useful, they sure did a great job for the NPCs.
If you haven't seen it yet, it spawns, has a bunch of HP (takes me 4 shots to kill), and spits heals at whoever needs them most. They don't even need to run over to it like we would, it just spits from afar.
There's your useful Lightwell, right there. Really annoys me when Blizzard comes out with these skills for mobs that aren't supposed to be any different than us -- which the trash mobs in ToC are certainly supposed to be "comparable" to us, thus why we face them in combat. Big difference when you're facing bosses, of course.
Alchemistmerlin Aug 5th 2009 11:24AM
When did they say the mobs "aren't supposed to be different from us"?
The mobs are all supposed to be different from us, if I wanted to fight Player Classes instead of interesting NPCs, I'd be a PvPtard.
Karilyn Aug 5th 2009 11:28AM
I would propose something along the lines of adding a hotkey for Lightwell that anyone can use (Perhaps by clicking on the lightwell and dragging it onto your action bar)
That way, people can use the Lightwell like they do a healthstone if they are close to the well.
That's why I think people complain about it, they have to click on it instead of using a keybinding.
Clbull Aug 5th 2009 11:32AM
That would actually be a very interesting spell for raid healing. That sort of Lightwell improvement would literally make Raid healing a lot more fun, if the Lightwell is actually a spawned object with a small amount of health that heals nearby allies for a small amount of time.
I mean who honestly uses Lightwell in its current state when it only has 10 charges, heals for about the same amount as a Greater Heal should over 8 seconds, and requires the group/raid to not only stand next to it but also to right click it to recieve its benefit.
Invierna Aug 5th 2009 11:34AM
@Alchemistmerlin
Look at the setup of the Argent Tournament. I'm not talking the entire game, I'm talking the tournament, and this dungeon in particular. You do jousts where they have the exact same abilities as you do. They ship tons of mobs that are obviously our classes, only with heightened abilities, at you.
But anyway, the point is simple. They have a Lightwell that does the work for them. If Blizz wants to fix Lightwell they could give that to us, or like Karilyn said, make it something you can interact with via keybinding.
Jon Do Aug 5th 2009 11:48AM
Yeah, maybe something like the old Kara healing book Redemption of the Fallen.
John Aug 5th 2009 11:51AM
I like this idea - it's sort of a super-powered shorter duration / limited # of tick healing stream totem.
Also it's like divine hymn without the idiotic requirement to channel it.
Asketh Aug 5th 2009 11:56AM
That's called Divine Hymn last I checked. It's a lightwell in the encounter just so you have something to smack.
jindynasty Aug 14th 2009 12:27AM
that's a pretty good idea for when the priest is unable to heal due to CC effects and it might also make holy priests more viable in pvp :)
Angus Aug 5th 2009 7:29PM
Yea, I just don't get it.
"It's a good spell, just no one uses it." HUH?
If it was a good spell, it would be used. But pretty much everyone hates it. In the amount of time it takes to target it, use it and then lose it to raid damage, you could bandage yourself. Might as well too. It could be better nowadays, but since I tried using it once and found it to suck compared to well, anything, I told the priest to not bother.
If that really is divine hymn, then the person that cast it should channel it. We can smack them instead of the lightwell.
Lemons Aug 5th 2009 7:35PM
Yes...because if this game needs anything it's MOAR automatic healing spells. I dream of a day when healers run around battlegrounds aimlessly and everyone around them is rapidly topped off by their mere PRESENCE.
hey...wait? no...that's a horrible idea. There's no choice in it at all. Any situation would warrant that lightwell...it would be OP, and if they nerfed it at all then it would just be a glorified healing stream totem and further homogenize healing.
MazokuRanma Aug 5th 2009 9:43PM
I agree, if you make it stronger and easy to throw down in the middle of a fight, it becomes too OP. The only way to balance that that I see is to increase the mana cost, but it's already a high mana cost spell and it would then be too much of a liability.
The idea is good on the surface, but it needs some work to become viable as a player tool without being OP.
