StarCraft II delayed to 2010
In an official press release, Blizzard announced today that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, the first installment of the Starcraft II trilogy, previously indicated to be released in the last quarter of this year, is delayed to the first half of 2010.
The release cited the massive amount of work necessary to overhaul Blizzard's online matchmaking service, Battle.net, as the main culprit for the delay. Since the new BNet will be part of every new Blizzard game from here on in -- including World of Warcraft, as players with BNet accounts have seen -- it's vital that the service be working properly before the game's release.
StarCraft II was never officially dated -- only an on-the-sly indication -- and multiple financial sites have reported the now-official release date as the first half of 2010 following this announcement and Activision-Blizzard's quarterly financial report.
What does this mean for the WoW player? Well, it means that if you were expecting the focus of BlizzCon, or one of the focuses of BlizzCon, to be a StarCraft II release date, you'd be incorrect.
Gives you pause when you consider what else they could be announcing instead, eh?

I'm reminded of an article I read many, many moons ago. The gist of it was this:
"Blizzard announces that Warcarft III has been delayed. Thousands of gamers go, 'Well, duh.'"
Blizzard always has and always will delay their games. They simply don't release them until they're right. And I am very, very much ok with that.
If someone I trusted were to hand me a blank box and tell me that there's a new Blizzard game inside, I would buy it, sight unseen. And this policy is why.
"When it's ready" and "Soon" are *good* policies, policies that are there to make sure our games are the best games they can be, not something that got crapped out because a dev had to meet a deadline.

This game is a lie, just like the cake.
revan Aug 5th 2009 6:07PM
NO! I already saved some money to buy it at xmas... ¬¬

Well, this isn't the first time Blizzard has delayed anything. I'm just wondering if they'll push it back any more when we reach the first half of 2010.

Think Diablo will get the same treatment?
elvendude Aug 5th 2009 6:31PM
Absolutely. See my above comment.
Fierna Aug 5th 2009 6:59PM
Diablo 3 will be pushed back. Probably 2011.
Boydboyd Aug 6th 2009 10:13AM
I sincerely HOPE that Diablo III gets this treatment. If they announce an initial release date and stick with it, I would assume the game is crap.
Elvendude is right on the money.

Curse you BNet!

"Hell, it's about time" is starting to have so much meaning.

I see what you did there. Hehe

Starcraft Ghost seems more real than Starcraft2 at this point...

Yes, but you're forgetting the RTS Korean factor. (And no, this is not a racist statement.)
Kaphik Aug 5th 2009 6:37PM
That's what's so frustrating. A HUGE Asian market for the Starcraft franchise, and this game is being delayed. And I was even playing parts of the silly thing two years ago at Blizzcon!
Bryterside Aug 5th 2009 6:48PM
The messenger bag they're selling at BLizzCon is called the Starcraft 2 Ghost bag.
fearthefireblade Aug 5th 2009 6:17PM
Two words: Starcraft Ghost.
sprout_daddy Aug 5th 2009 6:20PM
And the craptastic Battle.net service contributes to Blizzard fans' disappointment yet again...not a good sign for Diablo, which I'm looking forward to much more than Starcraft.
RogueJedi86 Aug 5th 2009 6:25PM
While they're busy delaying it, why don't they delay it a little more so I can have my complete experience in a single game instead of being split into 1 game + 2 expansions?
gton Aug 5th 2009 6:31PM
ok, i waited enuff for this game, im officially not buying it anymore, screw it
