Maintenance for Thursday August 6th
According to the in-game announcement, there will be two hours of maintenance tomorrow August 6th on all realms. The maintenance announcement has changed throughout the evening, but seems to have settled on this downtime. The downtime will happen from 5:00 a.m. PDT / 8:00 a.m. EDT and last until 7:00 a.m. PDT / 10:00 a.m. EDT. This of course assumes that there'll be no extended super-fracken-duper maintenance put on top of that. And we know just how much Blizzard loves to increase their maintenance periods. If there is you'll hear it here.
While the maintenance is going on, you can check out WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.2 and read up on all the things you missed, or think you missed. There is also the beginnings of a list of bug fixes; a list that's sure to grow over the coming days.

And the irony is, when I clicked on the image link I got a "Photobucket is Undergoing Maintenance" page and no picture.

Haha:
"Images and videos may continue to serve during this short maintenance."
Nice timing!

Blizzard was NOT ready to release this patch yet.

Do you really think another month or two on the PTR would have made a difference? Most of the problems that pop up are never discovered on the PTR, because it's just not a reliable test platform. It's hard enough to beta test a new product, let alone beta test every single patch to an existing product, especially patches of this magnitude. The PTR has repeatedly proven itself to be a flawed testing method, for two main reasons. One, not enough people utilize it. Second, the way people play on the PTR is not the way they play on live servers.
Bugs go undetected, scenarios go untested, and things fall through the cracks. Using the PTR as a way to recruit volunteer beta testers just doesn't seem to be sufficient. Unforunately, that leaves us with the current situation: test the patches the best you can on the PTR, then deploy to the live servers. One week on live servers uncovers more issues than 6 months on the PTR. To Blizzard's credit, they are *usually* quite proactive about deploying fixes in the weeks following a major patch.
Is it fair to the paying subscribers that their play experience is negatively impacted in the weeks following a major patch? Probably not, but one thing is for sure: I'd rather play a game that changes and evolves. In its 5 years, WoW has undergone some radical changes, some good, some bad, but at least I'm not playing the same game I installed in 2005. Sure, Blizzard needs to work on their patching and maintenance strategies, but I don't buy into the sentiment that they are incompetent and deliberately sloppy. Running an MMO with millions of players is the kind of undertaking few companies are capable of, and I genuinely believe that on the whole, Blizzard has done an outstanding job.
Remeber this: there's a reason thousands of people vocally complain when they can't log into WoW. It's because WoW is a game they *really* want to be playing. That in itself speaks volumes to me.

Aaaaaand you got told.

That there was some serious pwnage.

All realms?
ALL realms?
As in, north american realms, european realms, chinese realms, korean realms and so on?
No? Oh, you meant just the north american realms! Then why didn't you say so in the first place? I assume bloggers on this site are aware there is a world outside the borders of the united states, and, in fact, that people live there and correspondingly, also play WoW.

I go with: the majority of their readers are from the US. But I'm glad you found something to whine about :)
Faar Aug 6th 2009 4:35AM
Your snarky reply is most enlightening, and appreciated. Thanks, we're all lucky to have people with such deduction and observational skills such as you in our midst.
zweitblom Aug 6th 2009 5:29AM
Actually the European realms were down as well.
Agerath Aug 6th 2009 6:45AM
For N. Americans, the only world outside of their own is one of racial stereotypes and quaintness.
Hokuten Aug 6th 2009 7:15AM
You're an oversensitive idiot. Get over yourself.
Ralod Aug 6th 2009 7:31AM
Um, maybe read the blog from your country of choice?
I hate people like you that cry about not having there territory talked about on what is clearly a US site.

Would the admins of Wowinsider like to make a statement that they are only interested in the US realms? If so then everyone else can go elsewhere. Alternatively if they are a global site covering Warcraft in general and not just a subset of its english speaking players then perhaps certain of its readers can remove head from backside.
For reference a purely us site should be .co.us. The .com addresses are for international readership.
To the original point all realms were not down, US realms were down, a difference that has been highlighted in previous articles.

Well wow.com is owned by American Online....
Kylenne Aug 6th 2009 10:26AM
@Agerath: I had no idea the entire continent of North America was populated entirely by white people. I guess this is just a really deep tan I've had for 30 years.
Pot, meet kettle, etc.
Porky Aug 6th 2009 5:04PM
Hey Faar! Just 'cause I live in North America doesn't mean I live in the United States! I would assume an intelligent poster such as yourself is aware there are North Americans living outside the borders of the US, and, in fact, that people live there and correspondingly, also play WoW. We Canadians are entitled to our extended maintenance too!
See how silly nitpicking like that is? Though I'll admit, righteous indignation is kinda fun.
Mirantha Aug 6th 2009 2:43AM
We should all be used to this by now - it's a new patch, so there will be issues, there will be bugs and there will be reboots/server down times in order to correct problems that did not creep up during testing on the PTR. They don't want down time any more than we players do, they want things to run as smoothly as possible. In that light, let's all try to be a bit patient and understanding while they do what needs to be done to ensure we can all continue playing in the future. /hugztodahbluez
