Those fragile Venomhide Ravasaurs
Here's a great tip from WoW LJ on the Ravasaur quest. Like me, many of you probably headed for the new Ravasaur mount on the Horde side the first chance you had in patch 3.2. But there's a hiccup in the quest: while you have to get poisoned by the raptors, the Ravasaurs die pretty easily. You need to attack them for them to poison you, but if you kill them before they sting you, you're out of luck.Still, those crafty folks over on LJ already have a solution. You can use things that work as weapons, but are still weak enough to keep the raptors alive, even in your uber-powerful level 80 hands. Lances from the Argent Tournament, low-level fishing poles, Blacksmith hammers and mining picks all work, along with anything else that can be wielded but has low damage. You can also level up any weapon specialties you don't have maxed out yet, but be careful there, too: anything that goes too high will kill the level 51 raptors off as well.
Good luck -- to the raptors for staying alive, as all you'll want is the poison. And good luck to you with the rest of the quest. By the time you're all done, the poison task might actually have revealed itself as the easiest part.

Brewfest mug does the trick too

The best tip is this:
GROUP UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE
Both of you get credit if one of you gets hit, so you can get it done incredibly fast.

Group with a mage. That way you can polymorph heal that ravasaur.

Attention Horde Rogues:
Go pickpocket some undead mobs in the Fjord, Tundra or Dragonblight and pick up The Spare Hand.
It is the WORST weapon in the game. If you're willing to hand it out to guildies, it'll help them with this. Infact, it'll do less damage than going fisticuffs I believe, if only for the fact that you attack a 2.5 instead of 2 with your fists, and it's not a weapon type.

Can't you just run into their Hit zone and aggro them without starting to attack them?
Nadi Aug 6th 2009 11:11AM
No, you cannot. The reason is that you need to get "splashed with vendomhide blood" which requires you to be hitting them. So, you do need to be dealing melee damage, just very tiny amounts.
Culhag Aug 6th 2009 11:08AM
Can't you just punch them with your fists ?
Cast a rank 1 spell on them ?
Abbadon Aug 6th 2009 11:32AM
Yes... that's what I did on two of my toons... Took off all my gear and punched them naked!
And a special thanks to the lv 60 human DK camping Morvek.... Bravo! /spit

This is pretty much what I did on my warlock after a bit. Found one raptor, just pummeled it with my fist and walked away. Dodge most of the attacks. What I didn't dodge didn't do much damage and was easily healed.

I just went naked with my rogue. Even with max unarmed skill, it only took about 15 minutes and they didn't die that fast. I got 3-5 splashes per ravasaur.
Tori Aug 6th 2009 11:10AM
Also doing this naked helps. xD
On the PTR I had a great strategy going where I would grab a raptor, wail on it until it was almost dead, then feign death (being a hunter). The raptor would return to its starting position and regain its full health. Then I'd jump up and start over again. Rinse and repeat, and I only had to use one raptor instead of running around trying to find more.
Seems they fixed this on the live realms though, and feign death no longer resets the raptor's health. :( Oh well.
The hardest part about this stage of the quest chain is just dealing with the other people. There were plenty of pricks who would run up and steal the raptor you were working on, or just run up and kill it out of spite.
I'd definitely recommend doing it on off-hours just to avoid the swarms of people.

I did this on the live realms, hit it till about 10% then Feign Death. It did reset the health but sometimes you had to wait a bit longer for the health to reset. Unfortunately there were so many people doing the quest as soon as I'd feign someone else would run up and start attacking it.
It was pretty funny seeing all the horde running around on a PvP realm with no gear on. I'm surprised there weren't rogues around taking advantage of the situation.
Mevils Aug 6th 2009 12:16PM
I did exactly this on my hunter - but with a few additions:
Take off ALL of your gear so you can wail on the mob longer.
Turn on Nature Resist.
Bring along a few health pots.
Remember to hold off attacking again until the mob & health fully resets.
Rinse & repeat for about 15 mins.

Get naked. Use the Lance or Punch the beasties (easy way to level up if you haven't leveled unarmed combat). Bring someone that can CURE POISON with you (or do it yourself), otherwise you have to wait 20sec (i think) between each poison effect. Druids can cast ABOLISH POISON which can cure 2 - 4 poisons before the cure effect wares off. Happy Hunting All...
Aggrajag Aug 6th 2009 12:07PM
You don't have to cure the poison before another can be applied. I often had 2 or 3 apply in succesive hits and I was not being cured.
Marshy Aug 6th 2009 11:12AM
I took off all my armor, fought them bare-handed, stopped when I got poisoned, resumed when the poison wore off, then kited them away from their spawn point so they'd reset once theirs or my health dropped. This worked surprisingly well, and I only had to do this to three different mobs (the first two were killed by others before I could get my health up and get back to them).
Nadi Aug 6th 2009 11:16AM
Just a tip for others reading this as a how-to: you do not need to wait for the poison to wear off.
Tori Aug 6th 2009 11:11AM
That's because this raptor mount is the Horde's version of the Wintersaber tiger mount. :) They're trying to balance out the mounts each faction has available to them, and Alliance had an extra one with that.
sephirah Aug 6th 2009 11:13AM
Why hitting them unarmed doesn't work?
elstor Aug 6th 2009 11:13AM
Winterspring Frostsaber.
