Around Azeroth: The Two Towers

Submitter Beastotem of the guild Arise on Spinebreaker-EU sends us this photograph, freshly snapped from the back of his flying mount. When I saw it, I have to say, I was filled with a sense of foreboding doom. That's right, everyone, brace yourselves. The Two Towers are back. It looks like Sauron decided that the big flaming eye on the spire was so last year, but Saruman, strangely enough, seems to have decided to redecorate Orthanc in neon greens and blues. I think that whole "Saruman of Many Colors" shtick is going to his head.
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@gmail.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, gold seller ads with dead gnomes, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran.

I think you'll find that Tolkien didn't have any particular two towers in mind when he wrote the book. I believe the movie decided on Barad'dûr and Orthanc, but that's no reason to call Dalaran an Orthanc stand-in. Minas Tirith might be more appropriate.

That's what I was thinking. Sauron's Tower and Minas Tirith would be a more appropriate analogy, since Dalaran was never held by an ally of the Lich King against the other denizens of the world(as in, Orthanc was held by Saruman, ally of Sauron and enemy of the free peoples of Middle-earth).

Too late. In any case, as an LotR fiend I never noticed it before (other than the architectural and stylistic similarities between Sauron and the Lich King) but the Two Towers of Icecrown Citadel and The Violet Citadel, Barad-dur and Minas Tirith.

FYI, the eponymous Two Towers were supposed to be Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul. Good picture, though.

I once had a conversation with someone who believed that Blizzard borrowed a bit from Norse mythology and Lord of the Rings. He believed that places like the eye above the Shadow Vault (before the Ebon Blade claim it) reminded him of the Eye of Sauron, and how Icecrown was like an icy version of Mordor.

That was the first thing that struck me when Wrath came out. Parts of the DK starting zone (The Eye, the way the Lich King stands on Archerus watching over the land, like Saruman) reminded me of LotR, and when I got to Icecrown is was pretty clear. The one quest to destroy the Eye on the tower... the Wrath Gate is an almost exact clone of the Black Gate. Bolvar even copies Aragorn's challenge.
And Vrykul, Valkyr's, all the Titans in Ulduar, are of course Norse.

@ Zeplar - The Titans are actually from Greek mythology. I think the closest Norse equivalent would be the Jötnar, although it's not a perfect parallel.

@ Zeplar - Oh sorry. I understand what you mean. The group of giant, super-human entities called the Titans is from Greek mythology, but you're perfectly correct that the names used for the individual Titans in WotLK are all from Norse mythology.
