Breakfast Topic: Iconography
Here in Patch 3.2, we see two new cooking icons which are probably going to be related to some world events - the Bread of the Dead and Cranberry Chutney. Both have new, unique icons. Personally, I think spell and item icons are a small but important part of what makes the game feel unique. Some icons are funny, some are really colorful, and some are even plain sexy. Some icons were actually confusing - remember when flying carpets all looked like Runecloth? That was dumb, but Blizzard got around to setting things right.
There are cool spell and talent icons, too. Some icons look exactly like the item they represent, some icons are totally generic, and some icons are hard to make heads or tails of, although that's probably what Blizzard is slowly trying to eliminate. Did anybody notice how they changed icons for the Cockroach and the Magical Crawdad Box? Blizzard didn't have to, certainly, but I for one appreciate the little things. Like I said, small parts of the game that give it its unique feel. Are there any icons in particular that stand out for you? What are your favorites? Dislikes? If anything, I'll take this opportunity to give a shout out to the amazing art team at Blizzard responsible for those little square things. Oh, and if you can name all those icons pictured above... you probably need professional help.

Right, I figure this'll be a good place to ask a question that's always bugged me:
In the Aspect of the Hawk buff icon...
...Where's the hawk?
Exanimo Aug 10th 2009 8:15AM
It's the claw... the CLAW!!! (of the hawk)
Boydboyd Aug 10th 2009 8:35AM
I believe 'talon' is the word we're looking for.
Exanimo Aug 10th 2009 9:10AM
No it's the Claw alright :P

I for one am happy to see more icons. I can remember more than one time unintentionally vendoring an item because it had the same icon as something I didn't need.

I did that recently with a piece from my fishing outfit, a ripped ogre loincloth that I'd had in my bank forever. I changed outfits to go fishing and got a message saying that one or more pieces were missing.
I bought another loincloth (not a ripped ogre one) on AH and accidently sold it, too.
I wish bag slots would lock so we couldn't accidentally do that.

If only they could make a better icon browsing system. Not only does it mouse-scroll incorrectly, the list is just so huge now that it's extremely difficult to find an icon you want.

well off the top of my head, thats Borean Man'O'War and Pain Supression to the left of those...

Does anyone know about wow/warcraft icon gallery? I'm really huge fan of their icon art and cant find anything - probably due to copyrights...?

The only time I get confused with icon is when I switch from my Preist main to my Paladin and subconusly go for Consecration thinking I'm still on my preist and going for Inner fire. That still catches me out every-so often,.
MarkFl Aug 11th 2009 4:15AM
You could macro your consecration or inner fire to a different icon, it'd take a little bit of getting used to, but then it would solve the problem.

Same here when switching from Warlock to Death Knight alts. Death Coil...same icon and name, verrrrry different effects. Heh.

The first row in the background are all the heirlooms.

I'm a really big fan of the Savage roar icon. It look's so cool and all the newer icons seem really hi-res compared to the old ones... Dunno if that's just me though xD

I have watched the progression of icons steadily in the two years I've been playing. It's nice that they will make some changes so you don't accidentally vend something you meant to keep.
I noticed, in Burning Crusade, that some of the meats seemed to have the same icon, merely colored differently. My stomach would turn every time I'd see a piece of warp stalker meat in my bag. GREEN meat is SO not appealing!

Sam I Am begs to differ I'm sure.
