MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all those other shiny MMOs! Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world.
| Final Fantasy XIV's first jobs and race names revealed New information is dropping rapidly on this game. Now, Final Fantasy XIV's race names and first classes have been revealed. Hmm, maybe those rumors of an earlier than expected beta carried more weight to them than we thought. |
|
| Former Warhammer Online GM gives perspective on game's decline At Massively we must often report on declining subscription numbers and subsequent layoffs in the MMO industry, just as we do when the games we love are healthy and growing. When you look beyond the numbers though, such industry statistics are ultimately about people whose lives have been negatively impacted. They face uncertainty in their career and likely have tough times ahead. |
|
| The Daze of Darkfall epilogue: The Siege of Andruk So I thought I was done with my whole "month long investigation of Darkfall." Best way to end out the series was to include some PvP being lead by Wardragon Drow (*gasp*, a last name, and I'll get to that in a second) and then close it off there. Well, sadly, Darkfall had one more surprise left for me. Or, should I say, the Blackrock Clan had one more surprise for me. A siege. |
|
| Choose my Adventure: Lord of the Rings Online With our Guild Wars adventures behind us, it's now time to branch out into our next game for the Choose my Adventure series. According to your votes accumulated this week, Lord of the Rings Online will be my next game to explore, with a little help from you, the readers. You also voted to keep the format the same, so I'm happy to hear that it's been working well so far. |
| Get closer to The Old Republic's Smuggler class BioWare's latest Star Wars: The Old Republic dev blog gives us a look into their thoughts and reasoning on the creation of the Smuggler class. Frankly, we're smitten with the idea that as a Smuggler we could romance a Jedi Knight. Yep, it's been decided. We're going to spend most of our time tallying up romantic conquests and witty one-liners when this game finally arrives. |
|
| A Wild Hunt leads to Warhammer's one year anniversary What happens when you don't appease a god in the Warhammer Online universe? They get angry -- very, very angry. And then they smash things. Unfortunately, it appears as though the High Elves have been too focused on the RvR campaign to properly honour Kurnous with their annual sacred hunt and it has greatly displeased the God of the Hunt and Lord of the Beasts. His retaliation sets the stage for a new Live Event called Wild Hunt, which releases August 31, 2009 and leads into the game's first anniversary. |
|
| EVE Evolved: Top five EVE Online apps Back in 2004, a friend introduced me to a relatively new space MMO called EVE Online, where the markets were run by the players and there were undiscovered frontiers to chart. A short time after, I became obsessed with pre-calculating everything in the game. I thought that if the game server can calculate everything we do, I must be able to replicate the process and come up with some interesting results. |
|
| MMO documentary "Second Skin" debuts in theaters It's not often that we talk about movies here on Massively, but the new(ish) documentary entitled Second Skin is definitely right up our alley. Today marks the debut of Second Skin in select theaters across the United States, as well as a free showing of the film at various websites. |

I remember playing FFX. Sooooooo long

FFXIV is an MMO though, a spiritual successor to FFXI Online if you will. Massively is a general purpose MMO blog, a non-game-specific version of WoW Insider, hence the name being the Massively part of Massively Multiplayer Online RPG. :)

I watched the documentary...and it was interesting, but really nothing we haven't seen before. Online games can be good, you just have to learn to moderate yourself, etc.
I feel sorry for the woman who lost her son, and I obviously don't know all the details but she said in there that SHE diagnosed her son with the condition she felt he had. She said that she had taken him to see a therapist, and from the way it sounded, the therapist didn't give her the answer that she wanted to hear so she took it upon herself to diagnose and treat him anyway. That honestly seems more than a little suspect to me, but that may be my suspicion of Twelve-Step programs leaking out.
I went through a period for a while after finding WoW where precious little else mattered. My job suffered, and I missed out on a year of school. I like to think I've found the right balance since then, though. I still raid and am a chronic altaholic, but I got accepted into the university I've been eyeing for three years now and am pursuing my bachelors. I just wish documentaries like this would do a better job of showing people that yes...there are addicts and the people who have their lives destroyed by playing games, but those are the exception, not the rule. Gaming (whether online or offline) is a fine hobby in moderation.

So, perhaps next time just link DIRECTLY to the article http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_213/6341-Casualty-of-Warhammer instead of pimping massively's ad revenue by linking to a page that merely links to the article?
That's the sort of lame antic that turns people off.
RogueJedi86 Aug 11th 2009 11:22AM
Well guess what? This article is a roundup of articles from MASSIVELY last week. So that means you'll get links to MASSIVELY articles. The MASSIVELY articles link to the source articles, so you can relax. It's not like Massively and WoWInsider article writers get paid per article view.
I'm a big TOR fan, but you don't hear me bitching about them not linking directly to the TOR Smuggler feature. Why? Because you can just click to the TOR feature from the Massively article. You can see comments about said feature on Massively's site too, if the feature interests you and you want to discuss it(same as WoW Insider).
I might understand your complaints if Massively never linked their sources, but they do. So relax.

I had planned to blow off Final Fantasy XIV entirely for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but this new XIV info is intriguing. The job system being based on your weapon, with no actual levels? Actual honest to god crafting classes? I haven't seen those since SWG(everyone else, including WoW, sidelined them into professions anyone could get regardless of class). I miss the Taru Taru already(Lalafell just look weird), but with such a beautiful world, I may have to try out FFXIV.

Don't know about you, but I'm gonna wrack up the debt and play both.
jediking001 Aug 11th 2009 11:50AM
none of these MMO's matter. WoW is the best n no1 can top it. Ever since ive started playin WoW no oter MMO's have even been close to competein with WoW.
RogueJedi86 Aug 11th 2009 11:56AM
Not everyone feels the same way you do. If WoW was the only one that mattered, a site like Massively wouldn't exist. And lest we forget that 10 years ago, everyone said EQ was the best and that it couldn't be beat either. WoW can't last forever.
Other MMOs challenging WoW is a good thing. It keeps Blizzard on their toes, gets them more active. When you're #1 by millions of people, you don't have to really do much to keep the players, just keep doing the stuff you always do. With competition, you gotta start branching out into new territory to try to lure people in from the competitors' games. Or would you rather WoW just stagnate and do nothing new?

Battle of the Jedis!
To be fair, not everyone thought Everquest was all that and a bag of chips. After seeing how long it took do do a simple thing like leveling swimming, I was pretty much done with it.
RogueJedi86 Aug 11th 2009 12:12PM
@impurezero
I could say the same of WoW. I've been getting burned out a lot more often these days. I'm on a break now. I'm eager for TOR. From what I've heard, 3.2 was underwhelming too. If you don't raid and get bored of repetitive dailies and arena and BGs, there's not much you can do in WoW(at 80 anyways) besides grind *shudder*. Plus the game is full of goldfarming bots that Blizzard won't deal with, even after multiple reports.
impurezero Aug 11th 2009 12:37PM
But of course, good sir.
I'm just pointing out that no matter what, each game will have those that love it, and those that hate it. I was never a fan of Everquest, but have really found my niche with WoW. And if the next big thing comes out, I may still find myself out in Azeroth, plugging away.
To each their own and whatnot.
jediking001 Aug 11th 2009 1:55PM
i hated EQ was a waste. ure right about the competition factor rogue cant lie there. but yes i have found my ninche in WoW. personally i cant get bored. EQ i knew alot of ppl who played it n got bored quite easily. The thing is with WoW is that u can do 1 thing so many different ways. 5v5 n have 3 different teams lol. not to mention since i found my Shadow Priest for PvP i havnt gotten bored. sure im not #1 all the time but dam right i do work!
Just throwing this out there, do yall think making SW:D our nuke spell would be nice? up the damage a bit, give it a DOT effect, make cast time 3 seconds with a 15-20second cooldown or 5 seconds with a 15-20 second cooldown (but that kinda is like pyroblast), and taking out the negative effect.
3.2 helped S priests a bit n im liking it for PvP. i just realized my spelling was terrible in my 1st comment lol.

What about Aion?
