Congratulations WoWathon!

After almost two weeks, the WoWathon team dinged to 80 last night to the strains of The Final Countdown.
On August 1, they started their mission to raise money for the charity Child's Play by playing WoW straight from 1 to 80. They have suffered through griefers, trolls and extended maintenance -- all while streaming to the public. The team surpassed their initial goal of $5000 goal and have raised over $8000 as of this writing, all for making the lives of sick children more pleasant.
There is still time to donate, if you want to congratulate them in a charitable fashion. Just go to their main website and click on the ChipIn! button before August 15th. Any contribution helps, no matter how small.
I'm so proud of them (sniff) and I'm looking forward to next year's WoWathon.

Well Kudos to them!
I've donated to Child's Play in the past and I'm glad these guys were able to raise so much. Even as much as I play and monitor sites such as WoW.com, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to devote that much effort to such at thing, even during my days in college.

This was an awesome idea, and I'm glad it went so well.
Maybe next year they could have an additional feature accepting donations for certain things. For example...is your guild doing a Molten Core rep run and would llike to have the Child's Play team tag along? Well, obviously they can't because there's no experience in that. So, donate $100 and they'll take a leveling break and come along with you!
Might not get all that many takers, but I could see a couple of guilds pooling together some money to get some recognition on the livecast (and simultaneously doing something good). Offering this extra certainly couldn't hurt at least.

Jesus...when I try to make a reply to someone, it gives me a new post. When I try to make a new post, it becomes a reply.

Anything that can raise money for Child's Play sounds like a good idea to me.
People were griefing/trolling them? Pretty classless.

I personally saw a guy in trade chat making alt after alt saying repeatedly, "CHILDS is quitting wow today! Whisper him for 50g free!" That made me incredibly angry.

Some people really need to be locked in a small dark room for an indefinite amount of time.
No matter how much good someone tries to do, there's always one yutz that has to screw it up.
Anyway. Awesome job to WoWathon! I was hoping they'd reach their goal, but it's even better that they destroyed it! Grats to them and Child's Play!

WIthout trying to sound like I'm defending the trolls, there is technically one upside.
This event certainly got more and more exposure and donations the longer they played. So, while the trolls are douches, at least we know that they're also failures, because in the long run, what's the worst that could have happened: Child's Play has to play for longer and get more donations?
There's always a silver lining, right?

Grats to them! That took a lot of work no doubt and I'm glad to see they pushed on despite the trolls and the other problems they ran into.
I look forward to the marathon next year.

Grats to them, but wtfHat?
bluerobin427 Aug 13th 2009 4:51PM
The random hats were an awesome part of the stream and EB (the one with no head in the screenshot) is actually wearing a hat too. Anyway, grats again guys and it's for a great cause!

So now that they're finished, I guess the real question is...what are they going to do with those lvl 80 toons? Will they become mains and start raiding? Kept to the side and used for a couple in game appearences? Or will they become victims of the delete button?
supracom Aug 13th 2009 4:42PM
Remember the South Park episode? Now that they're done with all that, they'll probably... play WoW :)
micgillam Aug 13th 2009 4:42PM
Ebay 'em to raise another couple hundred for the charity?

Was a lot of fun watching them all from the start of ZF spam runs. Interaction with the server Gms was awesome as well. Thanks for a fun and enjoyable 2 weeks of letting us watch your lives for a great cause.
In habit, I keep checking the wowathon website to see what they are doing, in hopes that I will see them online. It's honestly a void now in my daily routine. I got used to watching them or listening to them in the background and will miss Kelly, Jacob, Alex, EB, Charlie and all the other pitch hitters that helped out.
