Gear is nothing more than a set of tools. They improve your performance on a given task. Gear will be replaced, either in the next content patch, or the next xpac, regardless. But no matter how transient gear is, it still offers some in-game benefit.

Achievements offer no benefit to game play.

I guess it is what you value.
