Onyxia is one of the greatest NPCs of vanilla
WoW, from a lore, quest chain and raid perspective. Hands up how many of you have done the quest line to completion? Who visited Blackrock Spire? Who unmasked Katrana Prestor as the giant black Broodmother she truly was? Who got the key and then headed into the depths of Dustwallow Marsh? Who survived? Given my dragon fixation/interest/obsession, I was always keen to kill her. I would have completed the quest chain but for a little bug on the final quest. Still, it was easy enough to nip in once the need for a key and attunement was dropped. Then Varian Wrynn finished her off.
And now
she's back. I don't understand it either but finding out is certainly going to be exciting. Plus there's finally a 310% dragon mount that I actually
want. So, constant readers, what do you think about this revelation? How do you think she will be brought back into the picture? Is it just something to keep us entertained until
patch 3.3 or could it be part of the bigger picture? After all, this announcement has come just over a week before
BlizzCon. It's gotta mean something, right?

Luv the idea she's back, hate the drop rate for the mount.

I have to say I am most excited for the mount, and then for the T2 hunter helm.
Also, this kind of sums up most of Lesley's gripe with the Trial of the Champion. Onyxia was too generic for her in the 5 man and they brought her back for a T9 raid.

Yea, though the recycling of bosses got old with Naxx, this is clearly a nostalgia play - and works - I'm looking forward to it as well. MOAR DOTS
Pretty disappointed there is no hard mode though, just seems really wrong to one shot her after all the wiping back in the day. >.> But I guess I'm not really surprised
Who remembers all the deep breath theories ?? I know a few of you remember :)

*hand up emphatically*
I completed that sucker back when it wasn't even the Onyxia model that spawned in Stormwind Keep!
Who's with me in the old OLD school?
Zeplar Aug 14th 2009 4:00PM
Well, as we all know....
Onyxia's Lair was merely a setback.
tnam Aug 14th 2009 8:21AM
I can't wait, should be awesome! So does the new, stronger Onxyia count toward the Feat of Strength Achievement or does that go away?
Orrine Aug 14th 2009 8:09AM
It's just a bit of notalgia for players. I think her 'returen' means nothing lorewise
RetadinMan Aug 14th 2009 8:15AM
This. No lore= less interest from me.
Valt Aug 14th 2009 8:35AM
Actually. In Azeroth shes not making return. Gamewise shes returning, yes. In gameworld? not at all.
Just because shes updated to 80 lvl doesnt mean she has been "resurrected" or anything like that in lore. Not at all. She is still part of the story where she belongs to, nothing has changed. "Onyxia returns" sentence doesn't mean lorewise, it means gamewise.
Hopefully this cleared some things.
SarahTheGnome Aug 14th 2009 8:57AM
Actually Valt, for me it doesn't clear anything up.
The Onyxia we can still visit now, has no place in the lore any more, technically she is dead. This is something we can ignore because of the static storyline WoW has, it is acceptable, even understandable that while some bosses die lore-wise, it is hard to make them leave the game subsequently.
But I do think that when you bring something back, like with Naxx, lore should be behind it. Because all of a sudden it is injected back into our daily storyline.
So I am having a hard time to just take your word for it that it is still the same old Onyxia, that they have buffed her, but that she only remains part of the static storyline and that there is no revamp in the lore to make up for her return. I am not saying it is impossible, not at all. Nothing is beyond Blizzard these days. I am just saying that nowhere have I seen any indication that what you say is true, and that Blizz handled it fairly decent last time when they brought back old content, so why not now?

I highly doubt you would have heard any discussions of lore if you were a fly on the wall when they met to discuss the update to Onyxia.
It probably went something like this:
mgr: We should do something really special for the 5th anniversary. Any ideas?
peon1: Why don't we give them another vanity pet?
mgr: Of course we'll give them a new pet. We need something bigger than that!
peon2: Okay, what if we scaled the Onyxia encounter up to current gear/progression?
mgr: That's a great idea!
peon3: What about the lore behind Onyxia's return???
mgr: ...... Good job, peons! Back to work!

that's a pretty powerful talent you got there...reading minds thru the internet and extracting asinine assumptions from news a few days old.
Fierna Aug 14th 2009 12:27PM
Her return from death could have lore worked in. A lot of characters have returned from the dead without a very concrete reason given:
Medivh - sent back by (?) to save the world
Cho'gall - resurrected by the Old Gods to end the world or just never killed in first place as a retcon
Kael'thas - last minute well placed giant crystal
Magtheridon - "he wasn't dead we just knocked him out and started draining his blood"
Deathwing - he didn't REALLY die in that level in the second war, he was just faking
So in official lore, about 4 years after the third war, Onyxia was killed and beheaded. But there is magic, Deathwing, AND the Caverns of Time that could all be involved in resurrecting her.
Apra Aug 14th 2009 6:58PM
are you guys serious? It's a game, not some little story you're playing with your army men on your friend Jeffrey's bed. Maybe they should just disable this on roleplaying servers to keep everyone happy.
Veliaf Aug 14th 2009 8:09AM
Has anyone speculated yet that her return could be to do with Deathwing, and so we might so him before too long? If they bring Nefarion backtoo, we'll know for sure :p
Personally though, I reckon it's just to keep us entertained until Lich King, no lore there at all.
jessica Aug 14th 2009 10:53AM
I really could see Deathwing in the future, especially with an expansion possibly revolving around the sundering. Deathwing had a part to play in that with the demon soul. Maybe a CoT instance?
Veliaf Aug 14th 2009 12:39PM
Unless they do something spectacular with Grim Batol, CoT seems the most likely. Also, with regards to my above post:
might see him *
back too *
Avthus Aug 14th 2009 8:16AM
I think it's cool that they are re doing some of the old world content and it will be a fun experience. Can't wait for the pet and mount!
Mike Aug 14th 2009 8:12AM
I think it's awesome, and I hope they revitalize all the raids in this way.
