Since everyone seems to be worked up over this, I'll add my 2 cents and say that white lies are often valuable in society. Some people are horribly offended by any sort of lying, and if you know that a person is in this group then by all means tell them the blunt truth.But... some people simply cannot take it. They are not going to improve their playing b/c you tell them how awful they are, but they will dwell on what you said and how unfair it was for days. If you tell them a white lie that lets them save face, what harm is it going to do? Unless you believe in some supernatural force that harshly punishes lies, telling someone a white lie to make them feel better is not exactly a moral failing.Discretion is the better part of valor. And yes if you tell someone off in a pug in my presence, you will be on my ignore list no matter how bad said player was.

OTOH, you tell somebody one of these white lies and they get the wrong idea, then where are they?Well, it can be a worse place than if you'd told them the truth. Perhaps they now have a wrong conception of the situation. Perhaps you end up with somebody expecting something you couldn't deliver.Yeah, you're trying to be discreet. But sometimes you're causing a worse problem by your deception however well meant it might be.At least if you're honest, you can stand on the foundation of truth.
