Well, it can be a worse place than if you'd told them the truth. Perhaps they now have a wrong conception of the situation. Perhaps you end up with somebody expecting something you couldn't deliver.

Yeah, you're trying to be discreet. But sometimes you're causing a worse problem by your deception however well meant it might be.

At least if you're honest, you can stand on the foundation of truth.
