Possible new race/class combinations datamined
Here's another whopper from Handclaw at Scrolls of Lore, who first uncovered the goblin and worgen masks a month ago.
You may remember the quest added to Thunder Bluff recently, where two druids talk about the merits of following the Sun instead of the Moon. Well, on the 3.2.2 PTR, another new quest has been added, this time to Darnassus, where a Highborne mage asks for an audience with Tyrande to offer his services as a mage.
While many speculated that the Thunder Bluff quest indicated a new class, they may be more correct than they think.
In the Patch 3.2.2 PTR files, a number of new race/class combination NPCs were discovered. The data mined from MMO-Champion seems to indicate that several races will have the ability to roll classes previously unavailable to them. Unlike our confirmed addition of the new races, it is only speculation that these combinations will be playable, but with the addition of the class-related quests with each additional patch, it seems quite likely.
The current list of these combinations is after the jump. Several races should prepare to jump for joy.
- Human Hunter
- Orc Mage
- Night Elf Mage
- Blood Elf Warrior
- Dwarf Shaman
- Dwarf Mage
- Undead Hunter
- Tauren Paladin
- Tauren Priest
- Gnome Priest
- Troll Druid
Yes, that's right. Another shaman for the Alliance, another paladin for the Horde side, two more hunters, another druid for the Horde, a gnome healing class, the triumphant return of the lost-to-vanilla-beta dwarf mage, the advent of blood elf warriors...
If this turns out to be something Blizzard is adding with Cataclysm, the amount of rerollers on top of those playing the new races will be truly staggering. Now where's my other Alliance druid, Blizzard?
2n - 1 go left, 2n go right. I don't see enough DoTs! More DoTs now! Are you ready for the return of Onyxia? With the Brood Mother being revitalized as a 10 and 25 person raid, you'll need to be sure you know everything that's coming at you. WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.2.2 will make sure your set for the next patch!

If Troll's are allowed to be become Druids and there isn't an apparent conresponding new alliance....well that basically confirms one of the Wogans classes then doesn't it?

Dwarf shamans: any of you people done the Thorim questline in Storm Peaks? At one point, you are given command over five Earthen dudes who cast Lava Burst, Earth Shield, Earth Grasp, and Earth Shock. Three of those are shaman abilities, and the fourth is pretty shamany too. Since dwarves are essentially mutated earthen, it makes perfect sense that dwarves would be able to tap into the same shamanistic heritage.

I'd like to guess that Worgen will be the next race to have the Druid class if Trolls are becoming Druids.

Human Hunter or Undead Hunter.
I will finally play a ranged DPS class that suits me :))))
At last a human or un undead in this class. !
I always thought about those classes when playing my Empire and Undead classes in WH tt.
God man how I hated MArk JAcobs to fuck up my tabletop game.
Long live Blizzard

Let's assume for a moment that all of this is true.
The old world was unfinished. I love the idea of finishing it. There's always been a lot that needed to be filled in. Blizzard was clearly testing the waters with "questing as storytelling", didn't fill in some of the zones with enough quests (Loch Modan, anyone?), and apart from some early quest chains like the entire Defias Brotherhood story, didn't really take the questing model to its natural conclusion. Blizzard is a lot better at quest design now. We've seen this with WotLK. We've even seen this with the Dustwallow revamp. This whole expansion sounds like Alt Heaven.
My concern is that this makes it seem like they may be deleting, yes, DELETING, a LOT of old content. I know that WoW has always been an evolving theme park, just low how when they revamped Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, the "original" Pirates of the Caribbean ceased to exist (but not really, because they merely diverted people along a different route and added a few tie-ins to the film franchise like Jack Sparrow. We're used to old content disappearing on us and becoming new content, but it's always been in a very limited form - a single raid here, a temporary quest there... not entire zones.
But it simply seems like there are too many issues to deal with when it comes to a, well, Cataclysm of this scope. What happens to itemization, considering that a huge number of old-world dungeon drops are still in play among twinks? What happens to Loremaster when a significant number of quests are being removed from the game? What happens to characters in the middle of the levelling game when the expansion hits?
And here's the biggest acid test: would WoW still make sense to a new player who ONLY purchases a vanilla WoW account, and not the expansions? Would that player have any understanding of what's going on, or any investment in the plot, once he/she hits 60 and decides to purchase TBC, or hits 70 and goes on to WotLK? How much expansion content will be available to players who do not buy the expansion? Does Blizzard even care, or have they decided that bored WoW veterans are their primary audience for the game from bottom to top?
I understand the tremendous storytelling appeal of telling stories in Azeroth set after TBC and WotLK in time. A lot of these ideas excite me too. But this seems better suited for a full sequel, not an expansion pack. There is a huge difference between what is happening here and merely revising the existing zones to bring them up to scratch with WotLK-quality zone design in terms of quest placement, zone design, and terrain construction (including the ability to fly). What is happening here is like burning half of Chapter 1 to make room for Chapter 4, only new people have to read Chapter 4 first.
What would make the most sense, perhaps, is if wilder changes like the flooding of Thousand Needles are phased, while revamps that add levelling content to old zones are not. Then it would really feel like our level 80 heroes return from Icecrown to find Azeroth in shambles. I find this unlikely, though, because a level cap of 85 tells me that a lot of these changes are meant to make levelling new toons a whole new experience.
Also, has anyone noticed the absence of the Maelstrom itself from MMO-C's leak? (I haven't read the whole comment thread here: perhaps someone has picked up on it.) This tells me the Maelstrom will be a raid.

I was hoping for a human druid class, bringing things another closer to Gygax's advanced D&D. The human hunter is edging towards an nature based class though, so there's hope.
The Goblin classes will be interesting to see. The Worgen classes I imagine will be melee-centric, I guess.

So for all intents and purposes ... everyone can be everything.
Uh ... yawn.

I think to keep it 'balanced', and because it makes sense, the Worgen might be the Alliance's other druid-compatible race.
Split Aug 15th 2009 1:17PM
@ Michael Sacco:
Relax, brah! Worgen dr00dz! Blizz won't make any goblin dr00dz; you just get wait a while.
xD

Well, from what I heard IF they do this Blizzard is just messing up the lore, which apparently they have been doing quite often. So, I HOPE none of this is true for the sake of lore. But, if it is...*shrug* I don't get why Blizzard contradicts themselves on their lore, but this is something they shouldn't do...it is nice to add more classes, but think of it wisely Blizzard. Also, like Soroks said, why not just give all 10 classes to all 11 races? Because, eventually it's going to happen anyways. Come on Blizzard! I love WOW and I know some things of lore, not all. But why not make WOW truly Warcraft. Not saying it's ALL non following lore, but somethings, like this for example, just doesn't make sense. I hope this is infact, just a sepculation and nothing more.
Mr42 Aug 15th 2009 3:19PM
@"Tauren Priest"... have you seen tauren in cloth? it's just too ridiculous to happen
Jas Aug 15th 2009 5:42PM
This is stupid, so stupid.
Night elf, Mage? No,no,no,no.
Dward shaman?... Eerr...
Aload of these completely go against lore!
Human hunter's I can accept. That's all D:
If these are true.. thanks blizz, thanks alot.
Zombi Aug 16th 2009 4:44PM
Night elf mages aren't that much stranger than troll mages, IMO.
Harrison Aug 15th 2009 6:41PM
Im sorry, Tauren Pally? honestly. I agree with the others but a tauren pally? nope. Im excited about the gnome priest. Soo cute!
Nelspa Aug 15th 2009 8:58PM
How lore backs up night elf mages is beyond me when it's against the law to use arcane in their culture is beyond me. Also to the person who suggested undead paladins... the day the decide that those fit with be the day I quit wow for good.
Tauren paladins make no sense either. Whatever their explaination is for any of these better be good.
xtremebmx_77 Aug 16th 2009 5:01AM
While they're at it, give gnomes the option to be druids.
I always wanted to see tiny bears and trees wandering around.
kebosangar Aug 16th 2009 6:58AM
No tauren rogue? /cry
