Possible new race/class combinations datamined
Here's another whopper from Handclaw at Scrolls of Lore, who first uncovered the goblin and worgen masks a month ago.
You may remember the quest added to Thunder Bluff recently, where two druids talk about the merits of following the Sun instead of the Moon. Well, on the 3.2.2 PTR, another new quest has been added, this time to Darnassus, where a Highborne mage asks for an audience with Tyrande to offer his services as a mage.
While many speculated that the Thunder Bluff quest indicated a new class, they may be more correct than they think.
In the Patch 3.2.2 PTR files, a number of new race/class combination NPCs were discovered. The data mined from MMO-Champion seems to indicate that several races will have the ability to roll classes previously unavailable to them. Unlike our confirmed addition of the new races, it is only speculation that these combinations will be playable, but with the addition of the class-related quests with each additional patch, it seems quite likely.
The current list of these combinations is after the jump. Several races should prepare to jump for joy.
- Human Hunter
- Orc Mage
- Night Elf Mage
- Blood Elf Warrior
- Dwarf Shaman
- Dwarf Mage
- Undead Hunter
- Tauren Paladin
- Tauren Priest
- Gnome Priest
- Troll Druid
Yes, that's right. Another shaman for the Alliance, another paladin for the Horde side, two more hunters, another druid for the Horde, a gnome healing class, the triumphant return of the lost-to-vanilla-beta dwarf mage, the advent of blood elf warriors...
If this turns out to be something Blizzard is adding with Cataclysm, the amount of rerollers on top of those playing the new races will be truly staggering. Now where's my other Alliance druid, Blizzard?
2n - 1 go left, 2n go right. I don't see enough DoTs! More DoTs now! Are you ready for the return of Onyxia? With the Brood Mother being revitalized as a 10 and 25 person raid, you'll need to be sure you know everything that's coming at you. WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.2.2 will make sure your set for the next patch!

Undead Pally anyone?
Soroks Aug 14th 2009 7:13PM
Upon further consideration: Doesn't this just destroy the point of the race/class idea? Why not just give all 10 classes to all 11 races?
Eddy Aug 14th 2009 7:19PM
That's what I was going to say. Makes more sense than Undead Hunters.
Lilyn Aug 14th 2009 7:25PM
But was there only Really One lore character that was a paladin after he became a undead? i doubt we would see alot more :X

The important thing is this... all classes are being lore justified. The reason they are being added is to give people greater access to classes, yes. But it's also being used as a mechanic to represent how the world is growing, is changing. After meeting the Frostbourn, the Dwarves are now more in touch and in harmony with nature, learning from their Titan heritage. After centuries- perhaps millenia, I don't know the Warcraft timeline that well- of magic discrimination, the Night Elves are finally beginning to accept and embrace the Arcane, setting aside biases formed at the birth of the High Elves.
The Trolls, a race that is so far from their home, and that finds that all the rest of their own people are savages or lunatics, have finally found something they are at home with... nature itself. The list goes on and on. Say what you will about how you don't like races sharing classes, but I think it's a brilliant move to tie classes to story developments.

Sorry, what point was there to destroy? It was one of the most senseless ideas from the original D&D, long since dropped from every subsequent RPG. How this bad idea ever made it into WoW in the first place is the question. Why *wouldn't* humans be able to become hunters, for example? Humans can't figure out how to use a bow? Hello? Reality calling...

So, NE bears have those long ears and sideburns, Tauren bears have their horns, WHAT ABOUT THROLL BEARS AND CATS OMG!!! (pees pants)

I suspect it wasn't the Hunter's weapons that would have eliminated Humans from the class, but rather the Hunter's close tie to his pet. Humans in many games (and IRL) are often seen as somewhat "detached" from nature. Perhaps it took a few years of fighting along side Dwarves and Elves for them to rediscover their roots?
While the Undead are almost "unnatural" by definition, so are many of the creatures roaming Azeroth. And perhaps losing their "humanity" was exactly what they needed to embrace their baser instincts and eventually learn to communicate with these creatures.
I'm one that doesn't care for the gradual homogenization of WoW. I like our differences. I like making tough choices about character and class. And I very much like having two distinct factions that CANNOT talk to each other! Still... I agree with the above posting about how the world is changing. Our alliances have held together for several years now... and those bonds are starting to show progress. We're rubbing off on each other.
Now if the above list holds true, it seems like a few too many new combinations. I would have been fine with maybe half of them. Still. Not the end of the world... of Warcraft.

Impossible.
Seriously, the Lore prohibits paladins from contracting the plague; one of the holdovers from the old disease immunity of D&D.
JKWood Aug 14th 2009 9:29PM
I would tend to think that Dwarven shamans were heralded by the contributions of the Wildhammer tribe.
MazokuRanma Aug 14th 2009 11:07PM
@elprogramer
Play more of the game. There is a paladin in Icecrown where several quests center around the fact that he's contracted that plague. On top of that, he's supposed to have been a truly fantastic paladin. I believe his name to be Bridenbrad.

I actually found it a tad racist that simply because my character was a Tauren, that she was unable to observe other horde races around her and grow an interest in their job roles. Sure, there are traditional and religious boundaries... but she's a smart cow and she is also an individual.
I know a Tauren Warlock is stretching it a bit, but why not? Why can't her life have led her in a direction that opened that door for her, even if her upbringing shunned such a idea.
We humans out in the real world, do completely contradicting things all the time. Our birthplace has no hold on what we do/don't do and when we do categorize each other by our races into stereotypes... its kinda considered rude. :)
Not all black people are good at sports, not all Asian people know Kung fu, and not all white guys lack the ability to dance. Its kinda weird that we require such strict lore-abiding roles for races in a world made of complete imagination, where anything and everything truely is possible.
Zombi Aug 16th 2009 4:42PM
It's called a Death Knight.
Acid Lillies Aug 15th 2009 5:25PM
Tauren priests.
End of.
^_^
Hangk Aug 14th 2009 7:11PM
Gnome.... priest?
Healy gnomes?
Viable all-gnome raids and arena-teams?
This is the best. thing. ever!
And here you all thought World of Gnomecraft was a joke!
flint Aug 14th 2009 7:34PM
Im so upset now, the choices that I would totally make (gnome priest and dwarf shaman) are classes that I already have high levels of. Though I suppose i could always use another priest, so i can have a shadow priest AND a healing priest.
Or I'll just have to settle for a human hunter, or if im willing to go horde, a Tauren Paladin.
Ailis Aug 14th 2009 7:36PM
Pocket healers!
Josin Aug 14th 2009 7:57PM
I'm ecstatic over gnome priests. I just don't understand why no gnome paladins. We've got warriors, and we're getting priests... wouldn't paladins make sense?
Well, as Alliance only has one druid race, maybe gnome druids with exclusive forms? Kitten, Cub, Sapling and Egg?
mibluvr13 Aug 14th 2009 8:01PM
Gnome priest makes so little sense to me. Oh well, more gnomes playing, more gnomes I can stomp on.
