Whither Quel'Serrar?

On the one hand it would seem very odd to go through the rest of the quest chain for Quel, then take the Unfired Ancient Blade in to level 80 Onyxia to complete The Forging of Quel'Serrar in order to run back to Dire Maul and pick up a 20 level out of date tanking sword, no matter how cool it looks. But since the quest doesn't specify what level she is, it might be possible (It was possible to complete a Naxxramas quest from before TBC launched in the current 25 man Naxxramas). However, unless Ony will continue to drop the sinew, I can't see how folks could possibly complete the epic Hunter quest chain. Does that mean those quests will be gone from the game?
Since I don't play a Hunter and I already have Quel'Serrar, this is all kind of academic to me. But I do wonder: my dearest hope is that they actually update the Quel quests (or make an entirely new one) which allows you to get an updated Quel'Serrar. Perhaps Quel'Zaram? I guess I might as well dream big while I'm at it. Bornakk's post certainly hints very strongly that there will be a successor to Quel dropped from Onyxia.

@Reinhold
Thanks for the pony :)
I'd give you a 310 drake from Ony, but from what I can tell I doubt either of us will ever see one... :)
fearthefireblade Aug 14th 2009 9:41AM
Remember to bring a 300 skinner to the raid to get the Ony Scale Cloaks made for Nef.
Woolley Aug 14th 2009 10:01AM
Onyxia's lair was only a setback...

There's another quest that requires killing Onyxia. Part of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline. Draconic for Dummies, one of the chapters drops from her. Now how is this going to work? Will she still drop it, making a level 60-tuned quest have you run 80 content? or will it be gone, and no more scepters ever?!
Kemikalkadet Aug 14th 2009 11:29AM
I hope it'll still drop. I've said it in a few posts on wowinsider already but it would be a real shame to break the best quest chain in the game just so we can have a retuned Ony. I do really like the idea of being able to revisit the fight for its 5th anniversary, and getting extra raid content in a minor patch is a real nice bonus. I just hope it doesn't come at the expense of a lot of great classic content.

Even Blizz doesn't know wtf to do about "Draconic for Dummies". I guess they're stumped when they have a problem that can't be solved by making a level 80 version of something.

I must admit as excited as I am
I do dissaprove of the removal of items from the game.
The old Naxx should be returned, playable by level 60 players, ESPECIALLY as there now exists the ability to stop levelling. All those players that expressed an interest at classic raiding at level 60 are being denied the ability to upgrade to T3 gear.
I would hope that the 60 raid in its current form remains for classic 60 raiders. Perhaps Blizzard can just extend their raid mode menu selection to include a switch for "Classic".

"All those players that expressed an interest at classic raiding at level 60 are being denied the ability to upgrade to T3 gear."
When they moved Naxxramas to Northrend, you mean?
heath Aug 14th 2009 10:37AM
huge diff between Naxx and Ony....Naxx was very end-game. You only needed T3 if you wanted more T3. For anyone who wants a 60 twink, or anyone with classic Wow still...you NEED ony for BWL...and you need that gear for AQ. TAking out Naxx was like taking the top steps off a ladder...it still works. Taking out Ony for 60's is like taking out the middle steps...
Barinthos Aug 14th 2009 10:25AM
I'm a bit on the fence with this news. I like that they are adding(creating?) more content for 80s, but I'm also a fan of Lore. And where is the Lore with bringing the Brood Mother back after we know she died at the hands of a few million people a few years back?
Now if they add some kind of Caverns of Time zone or some kind of Bronze Dragonflight mission of urgency then it would be ok...I suppose. But that's kind of copping out at the same time.
Farproc Aug 14th 2009 10:44AM
And? What are the 60 twinks meant to do when they finish BWL and AQ40? Naxx was there as endgame content for 60s. Not a lot of us made it for sure. but that's to a degree the point. Put it back, and let the 60 twinks ... have another chance to have a go at a difficult instance at the level that many did not get to see it at.
Sergeant Anton of Magtherodin Aug 14th 2009 10:48AM
i say that wow.com makes some sort of petition to bring back old naxx and to keep a 60 version of ony. and even if they take the 60 version away, they need to have epic quest chains again to get epic items, such as scepter , quel serrar, and that mushroom infested bow. i feel that the quests in northerend are just dumb, think about it, blizzard is making us repeat quests over and over!, realy were doing the same thing every day! MOAR CREATIVITY PLOX
RetPallyJil Aug 14th 2009 11:00AM
I was wondering about this myself.
I am so, so happy that I lucked into a Foror's Compendium of Dragon Slaying for the stunningly low price of 50g immediately after Burning Crusade came out (and Quel'Serrar was made "worthless" lol lol lol)
Good luck to everyone who tries to get one :) it's a nice sword.

As someone stated in another column, They should just make another CoT like instance rather then destroying most vanilla conent and recycling it. I mean, if you do CoT you can actually build a new raid instance for the 80man Ony fights. Or, as someone stated on the first page, make it so you fight one of her offspring or something to that sort.
Barinthos Aug 14th 2009 11:11AM
I know. To add to the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion,
The Lich King, to add to his army of undead raises Onyxia from the dead and imbues her with a fraction of his power. She then takes revenge upon Theramore for assisting Varian in her death and there's whelps and Dragonkin attacking the area at her command while she's in her hole biding her time and gaining strength for an attack on Stormwind directly. So Theramore is all but wiped off the map.
Before this happens the Bronze Dragonflight recruits 10/25 people to go back to when the Lich King raises her and has to take her down before she can destroy Theramore and becomes too strong for them to kill off once and for all.
They can phase the entire "encounter" much like they did with the attack on Undercity after the Wrath Gate quests. So not only will they be able to keep the 60 Ony, but have a brand new 80 raid for Wrath.
th15 Aug 14th 2009 12:04PM
They should update the quests for lvl 80 and make legendary items scale with level, like heirlooms.
thebvp Aug 14th 2009 12:09PM
If they are to get rid of Quel'Serrar, they might as well just get rid of the Arcanite Reaper, as it is that iconic among Warrior 1hands.
Do NOT get rid of this.
styopa Aug 14th 2009 12:12PM
"...All those players that expressed an interest at classic raiding at level 60..."
Wow, BOTH of them? /lol
Seriously, I'd love to see stats out of the 11+ million current players, how many are ACTUALLY running the 'classic raids' AT THE LEVELS THEY WERE BUILT FOR.* 50? 12?
* not to say that they're not ridiculously easy even at-level. A lvl-60 toon in 2009 has access to 51-point-high talent trees that have themselves been meanwhile buffed generally.
Psiwave Aug 14th 2009 11:03PM
I don't see how a level 80 version of the raid should stop people playing a level 60 version. Why not use the normal/heroic mechanic. Normal versions are level 60 tuned, heroics are for 80.
Infact I'd like to see all old content tuned this way. Level 82 van cleef FTW!
vocenoctum Aug 14th 2009 12:34PM
I've been saying for a while now that they should redo some of the old dungeons in a Heroic format. Deadmines is level 15, heroic deadmines is level 80.
The ony encounter would seem to fit in easily with their new tiered Heroic for Raids. Ony60 for normal, Ony80 for Heroic 10/25.
