I think I see the good picture - there is a Cataclysm, the world is transformed and distorted in many different ways, zones get changed, new zones appear, flying mounts start to work, ... But also a lot of old raid bosses come back to life, a lot of sleeping threats of Azeroth awaken. So we take the whole expansion just extinguishing the fires of the big BOOOM of the Cataclysm. In the NEXT expansion however, we go to level 90 and travel down to the Queen Azhara in the centre of the Maelstrom who actually caused all this. Instead of this whole thing being one large expansion, they simply decided to split the 80-90 expansion into two smaller ones: one that mostly affects old zones and the other that is purely end-game.
