We Have a Tabard: Hang up and raid
Looking for a guild? Well, you can join ours! We have a tabard and everything! Check back every Friday for Amanda Dean talking about guilds ad guild leadership in We Have a Tabard.I've been having a blast raiding since Ulduar was released. It's been a joy learning new fights and getting more and more bosses on farm. I understand that learning new fights in raid encounters takes time, but once a fight is on farm the only thing more annoying than healing preventable damage is wiping because someone wasn't paying attention.
Just like distracted driving can cost lives, distracted raiding can cause wipes. In most cases the time for tank and spank is over once you walk in the portal to a raid. The encounters require players to be prepared and on the ball. Not only should officers lead by example when it comes to raid awareness there are a number of things that can be done to improve attentiveness:
- Be sure to keep the raid channel in vent clear during raid encounters. Folks who are not in the raid probably shouldn't be in vent. Quell unnecessary chatter.
- Know the fights like you know the ride to work. The more clearly you can explain a fight, the better your chances of success. Be sure all questions are answered before you begin an encounter.
- Mods like Failbot are epically annoying but they can serve a teaching purpose. Someone who consistently shows up may be confused about a fight or possibly not care. The messages that pop up in chat serve and a mild punishment. Someone who's name pops up as a result of their failure cannot deny their error, but can learn from seeing their mistake.
- If you have someone who consistently makes errors, you may be best suited to ask them not to raid with your team. It's only fair to the ones who show promise in progression.
- Be sure to have the appropriate mods for your raid group and listen up in vent. You may be given a specific task for the raid like firing harpoons at Razorscale or kiting adds on Gluth. It's annoying to wipe because someone missed an instruction or refuses to do what needs to be done. If you have questions ask them at an appropriate time.
- In most circumstances if it looks like fire, ice or a teleporter of some kind, move out of it. Odds are good that it will hurt you, or possibly kill you. If there's a beneficial effect, your raid leader will let you know.
- If you are unable to perform a specific task (for instance you're incapacitated or dead) be sure to communicate that so that someone else can pick up where you left off. A good raid has the flexibility to recover from minor set backs.
- Know your whole class, and be prepared to use it. I've found PvP to be extremely helpful in learning how to play my characters to the fullest. It never ceases to amaze me when people don't use their racial abilities in raid settings. A well timed War stomp can save a healer. Not only can Arcane Torrent stop casting for a moment, it can also help the tank bring casters together.
- Give your raid your fullest attention. Of course emergencies happen and no one expects you to play through them. Text messages on your phone and in-game tells are not emergencies. Try to avoid raiding while on the phone. You can make quick calls between bosses, but if you're expecting an important call, perhaps you should take a pass on raiding.
- Until your raid leader calls a wipe, keep giving it your all.
I'm sure there are some folks out there who can raid blindfolded with one hand tied behind their backs. Most of us need to put some work into it. Remember that while your raid leader might hear an excuse, the boss doesn't. If you make a mistake, learn from it and do better next time.

i can has taberd?
Great article. Never stops amazing me how little people in pug raids know tho, even with achievements for the raid. And after 3.2 I've actually seen protadins die while casring exorcism while tanking whole groups of mobs. Lol wut?

It's taking a little longer to unlearn than we were expecting. xD And feels utterly embarrasing every time.

but what is their server name/guild name????/ please tell
Taedran Aug 15th 2009 8:25PM
Their Guild is Pals for Life.
I think their server is Laughing Skull, but I'm not 100% on that.
Josh Aug 15th 2009 8:31PM
The server is most certainly Laughing Skull, my home server. In fact, Leeroy and his night elf warrior friend once ganked my hunter. Good times.

Only problem I see with this article is the bit about failbot - I've seen it incorrectly report information too often to trust it anymore (according to my GM's failbot I've been hit by Mimiron's rockets 7 times in one fight... maybe I'm just op?). Even if you trust it, though, I find that looking through each person's record of death via Recount or something similar is more informative.
Ailis Aug 15th 2009 8:48PM
Acheron is another good mod for charting deaths/mistakes. The raid leader can use it to see everything that happened leading up to each raid member's death and can broadcast that report to a specified channel.
Ringo Flinthammer Aug 15th 2009 8:49PM
It's not saying you've been hit by seven rockets -- it's the seventh failure for you of the raid.
Neirin Aug 15th 2009 9:19PM
I know how to read failbot, thank you. I'm saying the message popped up 7 times in 1 fight (in which I wasn't hit I might add).
Neirin Aug 15th 2009 9:38PM
lol, touche.
Seriously, though, there were complaints from guild members about failbot's inaccuracy, so our raid leaders scrapped it a while ago.
Memzer Aug 16th 2009 4:39AM
Just FYI:
Failbot was discontinued/abandoned by it's developers. There are alternatives however, Ensidiafails for example.
Also FYI:
When Failbot reports your name for a fail the number appended to the end is the number of times you have been failed at that type since the mod was reset - when your raid leader decides to reset the mod is completely at their discretion.
E.g:
Neirin fails at void zone (4)
Means that you have been hit by a void zone and that the mod has recorded you being hit on three separate occasions, those occasions may have been 5 months ago however unless your raid leader has reset the mod for the raid / encounter. In the mod suggested by the authors as a replacement there is an option to automatically reset the fail counters upon encounter start.
And yes, I'm one of those annoying raid leaders who will run these mods during any raid, Ulduar 25 or a Sarth1D pug run with alts. Name and Shame is unfortunately the only way that most people (from new players, to experienced raiders) will learn from their mistakes.

From The Developers of Failbot:
"I have recently quit raiding and will soon be quitting WoW altogether, so I will no longer be able to maintain and update this project. I suggest checking out EnsidiaFails for a proper replacement:
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/ensidiafails.aspx"
EnsidiaFails does appear to generate inaccurate numbers regarding the total number of failures. True you can set options to count the total number of fails per fight but I reset mine per wipe and still see off totals. I am not really sure but I am guessing for example when you standing void zone it counts ticks of dmg so one void zone might equal 4 times due to the dmg ticks? Unsure but the fact remains during the fight it does correctly identify when a fail occurs. On OS25 for example one guy generated an event every time so we started calling out his name and telling him to moving right or left specficly. The event generation is more accurate than the count totals so pay more attention to that.
I have had the raid complain about the spam generated and I find using a seperate channel that people can choose to join helps.
Bottom line is on things like the clouds on yogg-saron...ensidiafails or any other failbot alternative is not going to help. You have to watch your raiders and have others report behavoir.
The shame game sucks but addressing an issue with a person having trouble with an issue is going to make them a better player. We had a player spawning adds in the clouds. Taking him aside and explaining cloud movement and add generation, had the raid going from wiping in the first phase to going through it like butter so it helps!

Oh boy, oh boy. I can't wait to find out what exciting news you have in store for us!

"If there's a beneficial effect, your raid leader will let you know."
It is every raider's responsibility to do their own research and know the fights. With all the tools there are out there, there is no excuse for stepping into an instance unprepared. It is not the raid leaders' responsibility to explain fights.
pam Aug 15th 2009 9:55PM
You're right - it isn't the raid leader's RESPONSIBILITY.
However, I've found that if you're pugging and you take 1 minute to explain the fight to everyone, it prevents a lot of problems. This may be because the person has been raiding Ulduar and they're helping you out in Naxx or it may be because they haven't done the fight before as a healer so they don't know what to expect. Reading about something is not the same as doing it.
Sarakin Aug 15th 2009 11:05PM
I agree with pam.
I've tried reading up on some fights and usually the info is what their abilities do but it's not as effective as just trying the fight.
Especially the videos. the horrible videos on most raiding sites. Every single one i've seen has just been a video of someone doing the fight but their UI is all muddled with crap because they of course have recount and whatever relevant addons they use. If there was some kind of voiceover explaining what was happening then maybe just maybe the video would make some sense.
