Both my parents died relatively young at 58 and 63 but both within five months in one year. I myself am 54 and I think about my endgame often if genetics have their say. I was into theater/drama from a young age which is kind of like RP. When I entered the computer generation in 1984 and played my first text Zork game, I was hooked. I have been playing CRPGs ever since. I played Neverwinter Nights on AOL and then went on to play Neverwinter Nights online. I played EQ and finally joined WoW about 3 years ago now. I have enjoyed it all. I met my hubby in a chatroom and we have been married almost 16 years now. I have met many friends here online, in games and through message boards.
It has been good. It is not what my dad would have enjoyed or even my mom, but it is what I love. I think that is what the OPs mom is saying... do what is fun, what you love. Then when it's time to ride into the sunset, be it virtual or otherwise, it is good.
My best wishes to the OP and condolences.
