With news that the
Broodmother herself
is returning for
WoW's fifth anniversary and
patch 3.2.2, it got me thinking about other old world bosses which could be revamped. Now don't get me wrong, I totally get that Onyxia is a one-time thing this expansion.
All fun and no lore, to paraphrase one of our commentators, Maxim. But the concept is ripe for a Breakfast Topic, after all Onyxia is a classic raid but she wasn't the only one. Granted, she remains the most popular and the most legendary, the raid itself was almost a reward for completing what has to be the game's most epic quest chain. And then there was the loot, the
lovely legendary (if not in colour) loot. Excuse me while I drool.
So lets say, hypothetically, you could bring back any lower level boss for a short time period aimed at level 80s. Which would you choose? Personally I'd love to see the
Dragons of Nightmare, simply because they were so epic. Indeed, they are still a challenge to down today, especially with
that annoying debuff. I also live in hope of seeing something of the
Emerald Dream soon but that's for another day. So, constant readers, if you could have one boss return revamped for a hardcore level 80 raid, which would it be?

"We're gonna need a bigger boat..."

We just killed his double... and then left. No one bothered to destroy the ship or anything. That ship needs to break out for Cataclysm with the REAL VanCleef at the helm. Yes.

a bigger boat? lets bring back maws!

Blizzard likes to use pop culture refferences a lot, so why not take a page from The Princess Bride and bring him back Dread Pirate Roberts style. Use Van Cleef as a title, not as a person. Pull his boat up to one of the shores in Northrend (or Booty Bay!)
Give us a few quests to warn about his return, and make him seem like someone we should fear.
Thats how i would do it.....

I'm sure Blizzard has heard a lot of fans wishing (whether serious or not) that Van Cleef would return. Imagine if they brought him back as an undead in Icecrown Citadel. I know its unlikely, but imagine that.

haha captain, thats awesome! and i suppose he can have a sidekick who wants to take revenge on us for killing father inigo montoy in northrend :P

Should the article title be "What Boss would "You" revamp for level 80?
RetPallyJil Aug 16th 2009 8:28AM
On somewhat of a tangent, I'd like to see VanCleef (remember - we aren't the only ones with res spells!) bringing his big-ass boat into Stormwind Harbor for Pirate Day.

Getting his head cut off though was merely a setback?

For a long time I've been eagerly awaiting the day when Hogger returns with new found demonic power as Hog'geras

I am gonna be Captain Vague and say that the old vanilla wow raids should all be revamped.
Not as full content patches though, i mean as a little extra thing. I joined wow with the tbc expansion so I have missed out on alot of the original raids eg MC.
From a storyline/lore background point of view revamping naxx for wrath makes sense (albeit a bit lazy - naughty blizzard for re-using tier skins! :P) however going back and redoing the likes of Onyxia etc (in my opinion) from a story line point of view doesn't make sense in my head; we cut her head off and planted in org if I remember rightly!
However, it comes back as just a bit of fun along with the old tiers in there for the collectors among us, hell you could even toss in a few achievements related to getting full sets, we all know that will make the players go back and raid them over n over again.
It would also allow the newer players to experience what the vets of the game have all had the fun of doing aswell.

(First comment, play nice! ^^)

This.
Very nicely said.
Sometimes we need to ignore the lore, simply because it allows us to have a more fun gaming. As long as people are capable of disconnecting those two things while understanding a revamped raid doesn't influence already written and put aside lore, there should be nothing wrong with it.

This concerns me like no other. I'm all for "recycling" to a certain extent, but it's not like the original instances aren't still available. Nothing is stopping anybody from going in and clearing it. My problem lies in the fact that when all of these instances are revamped, they take the place of a legitimate, new, instance.
As long as new material is being pumped out, I'm totally cool with revamping instances. When they take the place of new material- then I have a problem. And no, they don't qualify as "new" if it's the same ol', same ol' with new numbers.

They could just make a 10 and 25 option there's no reason to take out the old ones, and would be easy! 25 MC would be the shit!
Zayd Aug 16th 2009 8:47AM
Chess.
Maybe bring it back under the guise of Snakes and Ladders.
Tirris Aug 16th 2009 1:15PM
Or maybe Race to the Roof. With void zones of course.
Moage Aug 16th 2009 9:16AM
I'd revamp Vaelstrazz the Corrupted. That is probably my favorite fight in the game, It is a fun fight.
Clbull Aug 16th 2009 9:13AM
Heres a very interesting idea.
The main issue with world bosses is that they only respawn once every several days to a week and it depends on the first raid to down them (am I correct here,)
Why not (to revive interest in world bosses) use phasing on world bosses. Lets say the world bosses have a quick respawn timer (to not make a kill affect other raids), and if your raid is detected to have downed the boss already through raid ids then you'll be in a phased area where the boss won't appear until the reset.
Xiol Aug 16th 2009 9:13AM
Blackrock Depths.
All of it.
I want a truely epic 5-man dungeon back!
