A discussion in defense of new race/class combinations, pt. 4
GNOME PRIESTS:
DW: On the subject of Gnome Priests, I'm going to point out that Gnome healers of a type do exist in game. There's been Gnome Medics spotted in Gnomeregan, and more recently in the Howling Fjord as part of the Alliance's Northern Fleet. If you really want to be thorough, you could point out that Gnomeregan offers a Gnomeregan Bonesaw as one of its Argent Tournament rewards, and a bonesaw is traditionally a healer's tool.
MS: Yeah, absolutely. Gnomes clearly have the ability to heal, though we've not necessarily seen it magically done before. One the other hand, it's not as if other gnome magic users are few and far between.
DW: I definitely agree, which is why my final word on why Gnomes should be Priests would probably come from Northrend itself.
MS: Yeah, Northrend has certainly been eye-opening for the gnomes, or at least for those gnomes that choose to believe what they've seen in Borean Tundra and Ulduar.
DW: Right, the Gnomes have had a very interesting time of it there. They've had their whole origin and original purpose laid out before them at Fizzcrank's Airstrip in the struggle with Gearmaster Mechazod. Given that they now know where they come from, they need to come to grips with that. Are they horrified that they're descended from near-mindless Automatons and Machines, or are they proud that they were once the perfect machines of invention and innovation? Those are the type of questions a new Gnomish religion would work on answering.
MS: True; Blizzard has said before that religion might be beyond gnomes, but they've been interacting with other religious races for a long time now. Maybe they could take a step away from the drawing board and into more abstract concepts.
DW: Yeah, exactly. I'm going to raise the flag in support of Comparative Religion and Mythology in Azeroth again. I'd like to see the Gnomes not worship the Light, but rather start a Church of Innovation and Discovery, with Priests of the same preaching the virtues of said ideas.
MS: The Holy Light is comparable to Mimiron's Spark of Imagination, really, when you get down to it.
DW: Yeah, the idea of Gnome Priests being able to heal and harm via pure belief in the power of thought is actually scarily cool to me.
MS: And hardly as outright scary as some other stuff gnomes have done!
DW: Haha, right. But hey, if it comes down to it, I can deal with Gnomes depressed by their origins seeking solace in the Light too. But it would be cooler to have that whole Church of the Imagination concept, and would open up a lot more interesting lore and storytelling possibilities.
Priest columnist Matt Low's perspective: With the inclusion of Gnomes, every race in the Alliance will have access to Priests. It's very difficult to hate a Gnome (some exceptions may apply depending on faction loyalty). It's possible to see these knee biters as Priests. We already see them wielding arcane powers and demonic spells in the form of Mages and Warlocks.
For naming a Gnome Priest, might I suggest the likes of Gnoheals, Gneedmana, and Gnoblegnome?
From a tactical perspective, the Expansive Mind racial effect increases Intellect by 5%. That in itself is great as Intellect ties into Shadowfiend, Hymn of Hope and Replenishment. Escape Artist could very well rival Stoneform in terms of PvP racials. Lastly, Priest Engineers will have a head start.

DW: I'm really very excited for what all these new race and class combinations could mean not only for immediate gameplay options but for the long term story of the Warcraft Universe. With Arthas probably dying in Patch 3.3, we're entering a whole new chapter of the story, and it's a perfect time to shake things up. With new religions, new paths, and new philosophies permeating the races and stories of Azeroth, I'm very excited to see where the lore team can take the story next.
MS: Definitely. I think that while these additions are more overtly for gameplay reasons, to facilitate more choice in faction switches and to encourage rerolling in a game where we've had the same class options for years, they also show that Blizzard isn't afraid to advance the game lore and mix things up a little. Hopefully these are just one small step toward making that happen on a large scale.

There are already plenty of shadow-spell-using Worgen in game, so the idea of warlocks being a class option for them is well within the bounds of possibility.
Goblins would also make very likely warlocks. I bet they haggled for a very good price for their souls.

I really miss having a warlock columnist.

Thank you for posting this. I've been going back over old forum topics from before Wrath and BC over the past few days (just to see what some of the reactions were to early announcements and leaks along these lines), and no matter what gets added someone always complains that it's destroying the lore if it doesn't follow a precedent. Or argues that something will never be added because it doesn't follow a precedent. Even with two whole expansion packs full of things that players could never have seen coming just from looking at vanilla WoW, people will still argue that Blizzard won't do anything that would shake up the status quo. It's unpossible!
And for some reason I just love that picture of the orc, dwarf, and night elf mages.

Our own Zach Yonzon made the header images for me, and yeah, I smile every time I see that picture.

Oops :) I don't play horde much.

I've always wondered about the "play balance" reasoning behind the unequal numbers of classes available to each race.
After the introduction of Death Knights to each race, the choices stood as follows:
7 choices: Humans (A), Dranei (A), Trolls (H), and Blood Elves (H)
6 choices: Dwarves (A), Night Elves (A), Orcs (H), and Forsaken (H)
5 choices: Gnomes (A) and Tauren (H)
While Blizzard did maintain choice balance between factions, why have some races have fewer choice than others?
Does Blizzard think gnomes and taurens are so over powered that they need to have their number of choices nerfed? Are humans, dranei, trolls, and blood eleves so weak that they need extra chioces to compensate?
There may have been lore reasons behind these original choices, but I think from a game play point of view each race should have the same number of choices. Not necessarily the same choices, (every race doesn't have to have every class), but the same number of classes to choose from.
If these new class/race combos go live, we will be left with the following:
8 choices: Humans (A), Dwarves (A), Trolls (H), and Blood Elves (H)
7 choices: Night Elves (A), Dranei (A), Orcs (H), Forsaken (H), Tauren (H)
6 choice: Gnomes (A)
We'll have to see how many choices the Worgen and Gobins get.

I don't think it's about total equality, just viability... I mean, Tauren were, before DKs came around, limited to just -four- classes. It's a really cool race (and that's coming from a mostly Alliance player), but the lack of options always put me off. I suppose at least a few other people felt the same way. So they give Tauren two more classes to play with and expand their very limited roster since they're already opening up more options for pretty much every race besides the Draenei, who already has all but Rogues and Warlocks, and aren't going to get those for the same reason the Tauren aren't either.
Gnomes, on the other hand, also had few options, and theirs were much more limited. While the Tauren had a healthy mix of overlapping classes: Physical DPS (Warrior, Shaman, Druid), Ranged DPS (Hunter, Shaman, Druid), healing (Druid, Shaman) and tanking (Druid, Warrior), gnomes had no healers at all. Priests help filling that hole, and the lack of Paladins is also a very good indication that the Gnomes are -not- going to be following the Light as we know it. It's hard to fit any other class in with Gnomes, except maybe hunters (then you'd finally have a Gnome wearing mail), so I think Priest would be a good addition to their roster.

I guess it doesn't help that my first toon (and still my main and favorite) is a gnome.
At first I thought maybe Blizzard had a size-ist isssue. The smallest race (gnomes) and the largest (taurens) had the least choices.
Now with the new proposals, it's just gnomes at the bottom of the choice list. Maybe if goblins end up with just 6 choices we'll know Blizzard thinks being small is over powered : )

BRB reserving gnome priest names.
In all seriousness though, great article :)
Cyanea Aug 18th 2009 1:54PM
No, no no no no.
The most apt name for a Tauren Priest? "Holycow".
alpha5099 Aug 18th 2009 1:56PM
I was pretty off-put by Tauren Paladins and NElf Mages at first, but I've come around, particularly if they open up Paladin lore to allow for non-Light Pallies. Because I can't really see Tauren going to the light.
The more I think about it, the more excited I am for Dwarf Shamans. I already have a Draenei Shaman who I have no intention of abandoning, but I'll probably be rolling a Dwarf Shaman just to experience the lore and to have a chance to try leveling Ele (I might end up with an Ele Dwarf and an Enh Draenei, which is probably backwards).
Troll Druids blow my mind. I loved your idea of Bat Form. I was literally gasping in amazement at how crazy awesome cool that idea would be. I love the giant bats, and I wish there were a mount available, but I will accept Bat Form as an sweet substitute.
(I'm also excited for the likely corollary of Troll Druids, Worgen Druids: finally, an Alliance Druid race that I like.)
I'm going to be so disappointed if these rumors turn out to be false, because I've gotten myself really worked up about some of these combos.
Galilyse Aug 18th 2009 2:04PM
Awww the poor Draenai got shafted. I was so looking forward to rolling a Draenai Warlock or a Draenai Druid.
Where is the lock love in this expansion? I don't wanna roll a crummy human....
RogueJedi86 Aug 18th 2009 2:39PM
Roll a Gnome instead, you won't regret it. Once you go gnome, you never go home. :D
Irem Aug 18th 2009 2:55PM
Mostly that's because you've turned yourself into a chicken or transcombobulated yourself into the Twisting Nether, to be fair.... >_>
SuckItTrebek Aug 18th 2009 1:59PM
ZOMG Tauren shouldn't be Paladins, it's so not right and SO ridiculous. A walking talking cow that can morph into half a dozen or so other animals is perfectly reasonable, but to let them swing the light? Fucking ludicrous, impossible, out of place, and unbelievable!
Eternauta Aug 18th 2009 2:35PM
Do the quest you get from that lonely Tauren near the Dalaran Horde portals, stay with Tahu and Aponi while they talk about the druidic philosophym the sun and the moon. Then post again.
My point is: Tauren Paladins probably won't wield the Holy Light as we know it, but rather the Light of the Sun: An'she.
RogueJedi86 Aug 18th 2009 2:37PM
Eternauta, I'm pretty sure SuckItTrebek was being sarcastic.
Ronjoi Aug 18th 2009 2:43PM
No Tauren Pallies no no no. No Tauren Priest. Just a tip, if you see a Pally/Priest in Mulgore, Do Not Accept the Blanket. It is full of disease. Tauren do not mix with the Light. Please don't do this. I know it's a done deal but it makes my heart ache.
SuckItTrebek Aug 19th 2009 1:23AM
The Force is strong with you, RogueJedi.
Or, at the least, the sarcasm detector is strong with you.
