BlizzCon 2009: The Cataclysm trailer

The Cataclysm cinematic, as first shown this afternoon at the BlizzCon 2009 opening ceremonies, is pretty darn epic (as all of Blizz's cinematics have been, really). If you haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet, fear not - there are options. You can watch it embedded above in this post, or you can head on over to Blizzard's official site and watch it streaming or download a high-quality version.
And you definitely should watch it if you haven't yet. There's a ton of good information right here on WoW.com, but a video is worth quite a lot of words. There's even a gnome in this one! (A priest, near the end.) Not to mention goblins, which I hear are the new gnomes. I am incredibly excited.

Nathanel: I'm not sure what you were expecting, or if you just have memory problems. It's pretty much the exactly the same as the Burning Crusade and Wrath trailer.

ok, if nothing else (and really, theres lots of elses to be excited about) ZOMG ONE OF THOSE GILNEAS HUMANS WAS WEARING A TOP HAT! now my bank alt will be even more stylin!

I agree with him. I felt the same way about WOTLK trailer. Remember BC trailor, Illidan is sitting there talking low, he growls at you "you are not prepared" then he bursts into the air, music becomes epic scenes are shown to you and then at the end Illidan yells at you YOU ARE NOT PREPARED. It was the catch phrase, we yelled it in game, we yelled in in real life as a joke, it was EPIC.
Then WOTLK comes out with a trailer with Arthus's dead father talking while Arthus is walking about, he raises a skeletal dragon and then his army roars as he overlooks them. The dragon raising is epic in nature but it was graphically just ok. The idea of the army stretching out was cool in concept but lacked punch. Compare that scene to the one in Lord of the Rings with the unified armies marching, see the difference? No catch phrase, real feel of power like you got with Illidan challanging you out right, mocking you, telling you bring your A game.
This is not the final rendered trailer so I will cut it a break but still he was right, this trailer could have been done by someone for youtube, it did not interest me as much as even the non rendered WOTLK trailer with the adventurers going to Northrend and one falling in battle. This trailer did not make me care and the confirms two parts of one of my and a growing number of people's issues.
1) Goblins are unwanted by horde, "werewolves" are wanted by both sides. Even in the trailer they showed the transformation and a Worgen howling on a cliff top. Goblins are showed..... well looking stupid. That could have been a video capture of booty bay guards for all it mattered. Lets be honest though how could you make goblins as cool as people who transform into wolves!?!?!?!?!?!
2) The socialism of the game. Worgen = Alliance Tauren, Goblin = Horde Gnome. This was the same as what BC did with the BE Palli and Drainy Shammy. It was more than just the "WTF that does not seem horde/alliance like" it was the removal of the need to pick a side based on what class you wanted to play. NOW it looks like you do not even have to decide what race you need to play. I loved having to give up something to get something, loved the little diversity in the game, but now they socialize it more and more, the line between game and chat room gets blurred more and more.

I hate these stupid in-game 'cinematics'. I want actual cinematics. Like, the cinematic with the Lich King summoning his Frostwyrm with Frostmourne. Those kind. These are just kinda cheap, IMO.

Just to make some history, the WotLK Trailer #1 was released on a BlizzCon and it featured in-game scenes. Some time later the Intro Cinematic was released. So I guess we just have to wait for a bit to get it in the Cataclysm website, that if Blizz Cinematics guys aren't zombified by now.

They'll have an actual one for the opening when the expansion comes out.
I like it this way, though. It shows the real changes clearly and shows what we're truly going to see.

I am more psyched for this expansion than I ever was for Wrath. I LOVE the classic world and the idea of spending the whole next expansion hanging around Azeroth instead of some far off land is wicked cool. They are really starting to progress the Warcraft storyline more than ever before. And I love it.
