So im confused as to how/if the maelstrom fits into this. It looks like the Sunken City of Vashj'ir is right where the maelstrom is supposed to be. How does that work?
Xehirut Aug 22nd 2009 12:17AM
The Maelstrom is what caused the cataclysm.
It's my understanding that exploded outwards and has caused earthquakes and chaos everywhere. During the earthquakes and chaos Azeroth as we know it was reshaped.
Xerous Aug 22nd 2009 12:23AM
No no, Deathwing broke forth from deep within the planet and caused the cataclysm.
Nazgûl Aug 22nd 2009 12:23AM
Mmm no, the Cataclysm is caused by Deathwing tearing a rift between the Elemental Plane (Deepholm specifically) and Azeroth.
The Maelstrom fits because Azshara, queen of the Night Elves who became the Naga, has apparently resurfaced as well.
Endless Aug 22nd 2009 4:05AM
Maybe Maelstrom is *caused* by Vashj'ir inhabitants siphoning the waters of Azeroth?
Yarso Aug 22nd 2009 12:39AM
@Xehirut: As far as the trailer told us, the "Cataclysm" was caused by Deathwing not the Maelstrom.
Watch the trailer :p You'll also see there that there is some supposedly "Maelstrom" that's locked in a land, which is a possibility. (But then that's weird that it's a maelstrom locked in a land :p )

Ah! My bad!
Right you are.
I'm getting tired and my head is swirling with all the lore floating around in my head.
JC John SESE Cuneta Aug 23rd 2009 8:41AM
@Xehirut:
Yep. Same here :p Warcraft lore is getting harder to track every time they release a new Warcraft product. T_T Still wishing I'll get to read the manga and books sofar released... if I can find those here in the Philippines.
usagizero Aug 22nd 2009 12:30AM
Hmmm... looking at my map with carbonnite, i'm surprised to see so many areas not used on the map now. I count three that aren't possible areas where these will cut or use. I'm curious with the flying if those unused will be obvious or what. Kind of puts the old world into new perspective, no pun meant.
Suzaku Aug 22nd 2009 8:13AM
All of the yellow areas on the map are unused or unfinished terrain.
They will be remaking all of that stuff to allow for flying mounts, as well as remaking all the areas where they half-assed the terrain and used perception to fool you into thinking stuff was there, like the Ruins of Lordaeron, which are nothing more than a bunch of towers floating up in the air, surrounded by high walls you can't really see past. Virtually all of the cities need reconstruction to allow for flying around them, for this reason.

So, just did a comparison on the before and after maps: http://twitpic.com/eta2z/full
Blizzard is VERY clever! Almost all of what they flooded (assuming yellow is water of some type) is mountains and other areas we don't currently have any access to. Thereby saving themselves the trouble of MODLING any of it!
Sure, there's a few areas that are accessible that are being flooded (Zul'Farrak and Zul'Gurub look like the really big ones) but everything else looks like something they didn't want us to have access to anyway.
I was SO looking forward to getting to the Dun Morogh airstrip, too!
Suzaku Aug 22nd 2009 8:13AM
Yellow isn't flooded.
Yellow is everything you can't currently access. Red is new zones. Gray is old zones.
That's all this map is. It doesn't show anything else.
Mike Aug 22nd 2009 1:37AM
Yes, the yellow areas closely approximate currently inaccessible areas in Azeroth. View the Eastern Kingdoms overlay and see for yourself:

Freaking Uldum! I've been waiting for that to open since I discovered to lore after Uldaman. I hope it's a bitchin' raid instance, or something similarly awesome. Hm, Earth city perhaps? :D
Suzaku Aug 22nd 2009 8:35AM
It's an entire zone with two instances announced so far. It's visually inspired by Egypt and is populated by a new race of cat people made of stone.
Evil Midnight Lurker Aug 22nd 2009 1:45AM
We need to stop thinking about this as "the Cataclysm Map." It clearly isn't meant to be.
All this is, is the old map with pointers as to where the new zones will be relative to the old zones. This is not what Cataclysm will look like, I can almost guarantee you that.
Kerberos Aug 22nd 2009 1:50AM
It's the Vanilla map --- the yellow is why you aren't allowed to fly in the old world
Felix_NZ Aug 22nd 2009 2:14AM
What? No Kul'Tirus?
Sorely missing Jaina's home Town. Island. Thing.
drakolord Aug 22nd 2009 2:40AM
Well, Tol Barad is going to be a PVP Zone/BattleGround, so we might see Kul Tiras yet. Then again, what if the Cataclysm destroys it?
Felix_NZ Aug 22nd 2009 3:03AM
True, maybe we'll get a dungeon/zone thing to face off against the ghost Admiral Proudmoore or something!
