BlizzCon 2009: Cataclysm, the story so far

Here's the Cataclysm story so far, based on the official site FAQ and the Cataclysm Preview Panel.
While we've been off fighting Arthas and leaving a piece of ourselves in the cold northern wastes, Deathwing the Destroyer has been brooding in Deephome, the elemental plane of earth, for some time now. As he regained his strength and was patched back up by the denizens of the plane, he prepared for his assault on Azeroth. With cataclysmic force, he burst through the ceiling of the elemental plane and brought destruction to Azeroth.
Nearly all areas of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms were affected by the eruption. The Barrens is cleft in twain, with an enormous volcanic fissure splitting it into two different zones. Orgrimmar has been destroyed, prompting Garrosh Hellscream not only to rebguild the city, but to voraciously expand the Horde's territories. The Desolace shoreline was cracked open, allowing water -- and life -- back into the zone. Auberdine has been flooded and destroyed, forcing the Night Elves to move north. Everything and everyone is affected.
Deathwing's great Cataclysm had significant effects on not only Azeroth, but on the races that inhabit it -- especially some groups that might normally not seek help from other races.
The goblin home island of Kezan had an active volcano erupt under it, prompting a Trade Prince to cheat his fellow goblins into being sold into slavery while trying to escape the island. After their ship gets accidentally involved in the middle of an Alliance-Horde sea battle, the Goblins find themselves washed onto an island off the coast of Kalimdor -- fighting unknown enemies and joining unlikely, but familiar, allies.
Meanwhile, the reclusive residents of Gilneas, locked behind the Greymane Wall for a decade, have found themselves suddenly exposed for what they really are. Having summoned the ferocious Worgen race during the Third War to combat the Scourge, the Gilneans found themselves quickly overwhelmed by the creatures, and the curse that spawns them spread unchecked throughout the kingdom. Assaulted by the Forsaken, moving southward to claim the kingdom for themselves, the transformed Gilneans find themselves in need of two things -- a cure, and a hand. With the night elves promising to aid their lupine allies, the Worgen are welcomed into the Alliance.
Deathwing not only sundered Azeroth -- he also brought the Elemental Planes closer to Azeroth. In many places, the planes are pushing through to terrestrial Azeroth. Ragnaros the Firelord, lord of the elemental plane of fire, has been seething from his defeat at the hands of 40 adventurers and has brought forth his fiery wrath on Mount Hyjal. The Abyssal Maw, the elemental plane of water, has been raised along with the Lost City of Vashj'ir -- Lady Vashj's domain, and with it a strange yet-unseen sentient race. And Deepholm has been thrust through the planet's crust by Deathwing's eruption into the land of flesh.
The Cataclysm also has brought back forces previously absent in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Malfurion Stormrage has returned from the Emerald Dream to combat Ragnaros. The Titan stronghold of Uldum, long obscured from view by technology, has become visible since the machinery that shielded it was destroyed, and within it may contain a Titan superweapon -- or new allies. Grim Batol, Deathwing's former place of imprisonment, is now reopened in the Twilight Highlands east of the Wetlands, where he raises his new Twilight Flight.
Meanwhile, Horde and Alliance tensions rise. Garrosh Hellscream's temper rages unchecked through the Horde, and Thrall's ability to rein him in lessens with each passing day. As he pushes to expand the Horde's holdings on both continents, battles rage. The Forsaken march on Gilneas, the last remaining human kingdom in the Lordaeron region. With everyone having left a piece of themselves in Northrend, even a tenuous peace may no longer be possible.

Wrynn is going to be even more grumpy, racist, close minded. He's going to kick some ass this expansion i'm sure.

The Alliance won't even have Gilneas estates. At least not the whole city. From my understanding, it's a battleground with the Forsaken. So basically, Greymane is barely holding on to his city while the rest of his people flee to Stormwind as refugees.

I'm really concerned about that, actually. All the news was about Horde gains; I don't remember hearing anything about what the Alliance might be gaining, or at least not losing. I'm assuming we'll at least get to keep our capitals, but who knows?
I'm trying to give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt (surely they've got something up their sleeves that they just haven't announced yet?), but my trust in them is sorely tested right now, not gonna lie.

I just can't wait for heroic Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep!
murphraven Aug 22nd 2009 10:23AM
Anyone who is truly excited about heroic Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep either never ran those instances at level, or do not remember what a nightmare doing so was.

Running SFK was never a nightmare, with the exception of pulling Odo the Blindwatcher. Some of the best early game instancing took place there with nothing really comparing to it until the later Cathedral instances. You must have not released your rage.

Deadmines was a nightmare?
To quote Barney Frank, what planet do you spend most of your time on?

I'm mildly confused about what, exactly, the "elemental plane of earth" is.

As a Horde player, I am DREADING the prospect of having to put up with not only more Garrosh, but more Garrosh in a genuine position of power. Dealing with his jackass lieutenants in Northrend was already a bit much, the likelihood of having to put up with MORE of that in Cataclysm is almost enough to put a complete shadow over all the cool gameplay features being added.
The protagonistic-yet-misunderstood Horde that got me interested in WoW (not to mention Warcraft in general) seems to be vanishing in favor of more of the same generic fantasy "the savage monster men are the bad ones, the pretty humans and elves are the good ones" nonsense. I for one am not looking forward to that AT ALL.
Precision Aug 22nd 2009 9:46AM
That's how it's supposed to be...... Since you're horde you have obviously been in Undercity. Now tell me, does that scream "Horde is actually a good guy!!" or what? Horde are the bad guys and allys are the good guys, anyone who wants to think differently is just wishful thinking.
Sure Garrosh sucks, but Thrall has to get away from him if he's going to ever be able to sneak off with Jaina Proudmoore to make cute little Orcumans.
Nagi Aug 22nd 2009 9:56AM
Um...one race trying to recapture its shamanistic heritage, one race trying to get away from its base voodoo savagery, and one race that never had an ounce of evil to begin with all banding together and making the mistake of trying to help out a collective of backstabbers that they now can't kick out due to gameplay mechanics doesn't scream "evil" or "bad guys" to me. I don't know what Warcraft you've been playing, but until Garrosh came along, WoW was doing a pretty good job of depicting BOTH the Alliance AND the Horde as sympathetic factions with more good than bad in them, and the simple misfortune of grievous cultural misunderstandings and past hostilities keeping them in opposition. Hell, Patch 2.4 even managed to make the BLOOD ELVES somewhat redeemable.
I liked that balance. Both sides had their good and evil elements. If I wanted to play the usual, boring, "evil greenskins / good humans" crap, I would've picked up Warhammer or LotR Online.
Kia Aug 22nd 2009 10:05AM
Truth. As soon as I read that my mind suddenly screamed "ally for life." I play both as is, but Garrosh is enough to completely put me off the Horde entirely. Even bull-headed Varian is better than he is.
Drole Aug 22nd 2009 10:20AM
As an Ally I feel your pain. I've spent most of this expansion making /rude comments to Varian Wrynn with a rather strong 'Yeah well you're not MY king.' sort of bent. Both factions will have more aggressive biased leaders.
I do have to admit it'll be a little fun to actually get to hate on 'The Horde' with Garrosh leading it. That was never really possible for my character who grew up knowing orcs on Draenor. I've never been particularly partisan, but it's fun to mix things up a bit.
Rob Aug 22nd 2009 11:06AM
They are a different colour from humans so naturally they must be evil and stupid.
Jeremiel Aug 22nd 2009 1:05PM
I'm with you on this, Nagi.
The dark days on the horizon for the Horde aren't the only thing that bothers me - After all, the Alliance have their share of trouble with Wrynn also.
What worries me is that while Garrosh is warmongering, the Alliance are actually growing more open-minded, accepting the Worgen into their ranks, for instance, while the Night Elves even look to be allowing the Highborne to return from exile.
I fear that with Cataclysm, my sense of loyalty to the Horde may be tested.
We shall see.
paladinofcancer Aug 22nd 2009 2:55PM
While I have seen confirmation that Garrosh will be taking a more active role in the Horde's leadership, I haven't actually seen any confirmation from Blizz in wow.com's coverage of Blizzcon that Thrall is actually handing over complete leadership of the Horde while he goes off to be some neutral hero or something, as some of the leaked information suggested. Anyone watching the stream or with better sources able to confirm this? I hope not... Thrall is the man.
Zarfay Aug 22nd 2009 9:36AM
Orgrimmar has been destroyed, prompting Garrosh Hellscream not only to rebguild the city, but to voraciously expand the Horde's territories.
Rebguild? :)
