BlizzCon 2009: Class Discussion Panel - Warlock

- Soul Shards are no longer items in the inventory (at last!) but are part of the Warlock UI
- Soul Shards are not consumed by any Warlock spell other than the empowering ability, Soul Burn
What does this mean? For one thing, it means you should throw your old habits out the window. The Warlock class becomes, as Ghostcrawler puts it, a "blow your cooldowns" class. Soul Burn is an ability with a 30 second cooldown that consumes a Soul Shard and is off the GCD. When activated, the next relevant spell will have an empowered effect -- Ghostcrawler gave examples such Soul Fire (spelled Soulfire in the slide they showed), Fear, or Summoning a demon becoming instant cast. It could also extend the horrifying effect and boost the healing of Death Coil, or make the next three Searing Pains crit. Those are merely examples of what using up a Soul Shard can do to spells. Although not all Warlock spells can be empowered in this fashion, the potential is exciting!
The Soul Shard mechanic adds another layer of complexity to the Warlock class, and while it's easy to understand, it will take skill and good judgment to know when best to use Soul Burn. Note that according to the current plan, Soul Shards are only used in combat (no more of that candy or summon nonsense!) and "regenerate quickly out of combat". The slide indicated "three shards per fight" which makes using Soul Burn over long boss fights an important strategic choice. In PvP, expect Warlocks to use Soul Burn frequently and attempt to get out of combat every time they've run out of shards. Ghostcrawler did mention a way by which to recover shards in mistaken cases or extremely long boss fights, so we'll have to see.
Playing a Warlock will be challenging, fun, and different. The class was supposed to be built around the Soul Shard concept, and I think they've finally found a way to make it work. After the Warlock community has clamored for the removal of Soul Shards, or suggested inelegant solutions such as stacking, I don't think any of us quite expected this. Soul Shards were simply becoming less relevant to the class and became more of an inconvenience, used mostly for creating Soul Wells or summoning friends. The overhaul also frees up one bag slot as a bonus (whoo!).
Drain Soul will become less necessary as a finisher and will likely need a boost or revision to remain relevant to specs other than Affliction. The good news is, Blizzard has shown a willingness to throw everything but the kitchen sink in order to make a better class or game. Removing mana from Hunters, simplifying statistics, adding new class/race combinations... it seems that very few things are sacred to Blizzard. Well, except Soul Shards, I mean -- Blizzard insists on it as part of the Warlock class and were willing to completely overhaul everything just to keep the concept. On paper (or slide), it looks like it just might work this time.
BlizzCon 2009 is coming up on August 21st and 22nd! We've got all the latest news and information. At BlizzCon you can play the latest games, meet your guildmates, and ask the developers your questions. Plus, there's some great looking costumes.Filed under: Warlock, Analysis / Opinion, BlizzCon, Cataclysm

maybe their revamping the locks will make me dust off my lvl 70something lock and play again
Falcrist Aug 22nd 2009 1:22PM
You won't be alone. This change is AWESOME, and I expect to see a lot of locks coming back.
TBH I saw the soulshards-as-a-combat-resource idea coming a mile off, but this is much MUCH more slick than anything I could think up. I figured half of your damage abilities would use a shard, and the other half would give you one back (forcing you to juggle shards with your abilities). This "Blow your CDs" concept builds on the one thing I loved most about Demonology: Strategy.
In demonology what separates a good lock from a great lock is when he chooses to pop meta. For example on Sarth 3D, I can out-do anyone on damage done by popping all my CDs when the first drake goes down. Pre-Seed, Meta, immo aura, trinkets, shadowflame, rain of fire, dead whelps.
As demo the more I know about a fight, the better I could use my CDs, and the more damage I can do. This plays off that same concept. I love it!
The only question is: "What happens to our Soul Bags?" Ammo slot maybe?

My old main threw vanilla & bc was a lock. Sadly he is still camped in IF at level 70.
Hopfully he gets to see light again!

Wow. This is an awesome change, it will take a lot of getting used to but the benefits will be worth it!

I'm a little bit skeptical. Most of the examples they gave of soul shard use seem PVP-focused. Any damage bonus they give us from using soul shards is going to have to result in a damage nerf elsewhere, right? So really they're just going to make warlocks even more complex than mages, with no increase in PVE damage.
Also, I thought they wanted to make mages and warlocks less similar? Didn't they just say in the Mage Q&A that they are the "blow your cooldowns" caster class?
Atrocita Aug 22nd 2009 1:20PM
I agree with this... it seems to be adding a level of complexity that isn't needed and isn't seen elsewhere. If "blowing all your cooldowns" is going to become a central part of how you do damage, then our core damage is going down even further than it already is. Also, as an affliction lock, I see at the moment nothing appealing in the system, only PvP help that hasn't really addressed the actual pvp concerns we had, like stunlock issues and lack of defensive options. Personally, I already have 2 instant-cast fears that do me no good when I can't even gain control long enough to cast them before I die.
We'll see what happens, but from what I've heard so far, I'm more apprehensive and concerned than excited.

Not to mention that it's going to be a pain to remember what effect soul shards have on all your spells.
James Aug 23rd 2009 8:31AM
if you can't remember what all your spells do you should roll an arcane mage.
macfarlanee Aug 22nd 2009 11:46AM
ROFL the pets name is skullmasher, makes me think they borrowed some stuff from dk ui and im glad they did.
Jimmy Aug 22nd 2009 11:47AM
I did explode when I saw this and the hunter focus... this is epic!
thedruid Aug 22nd 2009 11:48AM
but i wonder what will happen to my shard bag... will it get deleted, or can i sell it as a grey item of vendor trash?
placebo Aug 22nd 2009 12:30PM
Soul bags already have a vendor price on par with other containers.
Suzaku Aug 22nd 2009 2:39PM
I hope they become regular bags with the same number of slots as the Mooncloth and Glacial bags .
Rabidgun Aug 22nd 2009 11:49AM
I really love blizzard right now.

As much as I'd like to see more Warlock because I genuinely think they're an incredible class (UD Warlock since launch ^_^), I just hope this change doesnt cause some massive influx of players who just want a Warlock because of these changes. I dont foresee it but, it still concerns me slightly. Time will tell.
In any case, I really like this change. Shards had become secondary and was the last thing you would think of during boss fights; say for when you need to Soulshatter and you dont have any. This will really make shards a key component of fights and the class as a whole (finally) and I can't wait to see all the changes in detail.

"...doesnt cause some massive influx of players who just want a Warlock because of these changes."
No, that would be the case if they started at Level 55, wore plate and could be leveled by rolling your face on the keyboard from the first minute.
Eternauta Aug 22nd 2009 12:24PM
lol dk's xD
FotM always happens. I wouldn't be surprised if after the day of release you see lots of ally worgen warlocks running around with names like "Sephiroth" or mispellings of the aforementioned word.
evanmbunnell Aug 22nd 2009 7:52PM
Nah, expect more Twilight or Harry Potter references than FF7.
