BlizzCon 2009: World of Warcraft art panel

The new Cataclysm expansion will continue to improve on the look of the game, utilizing new technologies such as texture blending - which allows distinct objects to be blended together visually. The team also previewed new water, which was just marvelous to look at. They also discussed the creation of new dungeons, which start from brainstorming, picking up lore, and getting real world inspiration.
Gilneas, the Worgen environment, in particular, seems to have an Eastern European feel to it, with dark and foggy villages. The art team were also playing around with the silhouette of the buildings, toying around with onion domes such as the ones found in Russia's St. Basil's Cathedral. It feels like a village in what movies would have us believe is Transylvania.
On the flip side, the art team showed a bit of whimsy with the Goblins, whose environment exude a Gilligan's Island vibe. The ingenious and resourceful Goblins make use of island materials such as bamboo and coconuts (and even some livestock!) to power their machines. The art team seem to have let loose with their ideas here, and I'm sincerely hoping they all make it into the game.
The panel concluded with attendees asking various art-related questions, such as the inspiration for tier armor or dungeons. One attendee even asked what inspired Ulduar and a member of the art team remarked, "Greece. Couldn't (you) tell?" It was a low-key panel that didn't have the same impact as the Cataclysm, but it pays homage to an aspect of the game that most players overlook yet provide the richness and detail that permeates and improves the playing experience.

Livestock powered machines? I'm there.

One thing I hope they do with the terrain phasing, is that the Goblin settlement on the Lost Isles is gradually built over the course of the quests. I like the idea that when you arrive, it's empty, but over time an Inn and shops start appearing.

Strongly disappointed that the Art Panel didn't make the Internet Stream. I would've loved to watch it.

I second this, even if, nasty as this will inevitably sound, I still think that visually WoW is a very weak game.
This stems mainly from the fact that the player character models are horribly outdated and downright ugly.
I certainly won't spend a second in human form if and when I roll a Worgen.

@Raze:
While I generally agree with you, please remember that most of WoW's graphics haven't been updated in nearly five years. Compared to what's out now, it's naturally going to be visually weak. And as far as I know, the graphics weren't intended to be bleeding-edge-awesome when the game first came out, so that people whose graphics cards weren't absolute top-of-the-line could still play it.
Having said that, I'm very, very, very glad to hear about graphics upgrades, especially to Old Azeroth.

Agreed. I'm thoroughly disappointed that I paid to see BlizzCon and they're actually only covering HALF of it. They're only covering whatever happens in Hall D, not C, which means most of the World of Warcraft stuff on Saturday won't be covered. In fact, it's less than half because they don't start their broadcast until 11 AM, so the first WoW panel they COULD have covered is cut off too!
I realize they can't really do two live broadcasts from two places simultaneously, but couldn't they at least get video of the Hall C panels to put in their archives? (Then again, these are the archives that are broken up by timeslot, with a break every 15 minutes exactly, and have several-second gaps between them, big enough to miss whole slides in the class panel.)
So far, I'm pretty disappointed with the internet stream, and I'm one of the people that ISN'T having technical issues!

Is there any comments about new hairstyles?? I want to see new hairstyles for all races.
Ryohalt Aug 22nd 2009 10:58AM
Any word about new hairstyles so far?? I want to see more hairstyles for the "pretty" races' females especially
Noraa Aug 22nd 2009 12:50PM
No new hairstyles, no new dances. Here's an idea, how about new freaking character models. None of that either. I feel like a character from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" i.e. a cartoon character running around in a real world.
Arashikou Aug 22nd 2009 3:13PM
Aww, but I LIKED Roger Rabbit...

It's a very fuzzy picture, but you can see where they divide up the Barrens(a straight line that looks roughly like it cuts through Crossroads).
I wish we had more detail to get an idea of the color coding. Blue is obviously the new zones, and orange looks like it could be the pre-existing zones that got changed with Cataclysm(Darkshore, Azshara, Lower Barrens, souther part of Winterspring, and for some reason Stonetalon Mountains). But we know from screenshots that Desolace gets all greeny and foresty, and yet its color is still yellow. So I don't know. All I can tell for sure is that Blue=New Zones.

The art panel should get more attention than it does. This is what keeps WoW interesting. With every raid...well almost every raid the designs become more and more intricate. TOC was just...well it's a ring with bricks and a bunch of drunk spectators cheering you.
The design in Cataclysm is the best yet and I can't wait to explore it all. Now that we can fly in Azeroth I have no doubt they have outdone themselves on the zones.

Yeah i was extremely annoyed at not being able to watch the art panel via the internet. I'm a professional game artists and was really hoping to see how these guys approach different tasks :(
