They taunted, they teased, they insinuated and then, just as the ceremony was about to end,
Chris Metzen finally dropped the bombshell and
announced World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Yeah we knew it was coming, we were -- to misquote Illidan -- prepared. Now, in the aftermath, we've had time to ruminate and digest all the information: Deathwing, the raised level cap, the guild leveling, heroic versions of Shadowfang Keep and Deadmines, a new secondary profession in the form of Archeology, two new races and seven new zones, a new (and broken) Azeroth and the ability to fly in the old world. Phew, that's a lot to digest. Even more information seems to be dripping out in panels and post-opening ceremony interviews.
So readers, we want to know what you think of
Cataclysm. Are you pleased? Which bit excited you the most? Is it the new races or the promise of facing another insane Dragon Aspect? Are you scared by the drastic and irreversible changes that will befall Azeroth? Were you hoping for the Emerald Dream or a fully Maelstrom-centric expansion and feel like the Lost Isles and Vashj'ir are half measures? Tell us in the usual manner by dropping your thoughts and meditations in the comment box below.

There are more people that believe the math is a frustrating affront to a pastime that's supposed to be fun then there are that mildly enjoy it. That equation is pretty damn simple.

Don't only consider what the stat and mastery changes mean to players, what does it mean to blizzard and developers?
Stat changes, less headache with itemization, less total items to make. With the reforging mechanic, the reduced spectrum of items will still be customizable.
Mastery, less talent tree mess, less overloading of talents, and less complexity in making changes because core class benefits are tree bound instead of bound to individual talents.
Never underestimate the laziness of programmers. This is not a knock, it is an admirable aspect of talented programmers because it introduces a whole new class of efficiencies to the application.

Heroic SFK - I loved that instance, and soloed it for fun many times.

The main reason they are redoing the old world its that that are also updating their game engine allowing them to do more then they were previously able to do. The old world was probably holding back any major changes. Notice in the game trailer the water has reflections something the current engine inst capable of doing. This is almost a new game entirely.

I agree, this reset is almost like getting WoW2. People who do not play before the world is destroyed will never know what playing the original game was like. This reminds me of when comic book companies use "Year Zero" story lines to reboot and revamp their existing universes. Blizzard is pressing the reset button in a big way and I for one could not be more excited.

I am really looking forward to archeology! I love professions. I have like 4 or 5 professions maxed and alts over 70 just for that purpose. :p
Also, deathwing is not "Another crazy dragon aspect." Malygos was def crazy. Deathwing is just evil. :p
Malkia Aug 22nd 2009 8:20AM
Deathwing IS crazy though. Malygos wasn't by WotLK. I wonder if they'll do a lore thing on deathwing for us. There IS a lot of information about him, and he actually didn't start out evil before... well long story.
ROB13 Aug 22nd 2009 9:49AM
Maly wasn't crazy, he was just misguided, and thought magic has to be contained and all magic users killed. He might of been right, and killing him and abusing magic might get us into a whole lot of trouble in the near future.
But Deathwing has graced my Desktop Background, and I just think he looks epic, and that craziness he obtained by listening to the Old Gods, is really making him a unstoppable force.

Simply put, its amazing. We (alliance) get Mofo-Badass-Werewolves.
Hordies get green gnomes. lawl
raingod Aug 22nd 2009 10:02AM
Worgen may be cool, but it's still alliance and alliance will always be inferior to the horde.
JD Aug 22nd 2009 8:19AM
YES!
I'm sure a LOT of people are freaking out,"this sucks, that's not what i wanted"...i personally am very excited with what's to come...Deathwing, by the way, much more badass than poor ol' Arthas.
Gilgamesh Aug 22nd 2009 8:21AM
I'm not excited at all. And taking a closer look at SW:TOR as a result.
I didn't think WoW would cheese it so soon. Recycled content? No thanks.
rawrawrawr Aug 22nd 2009 8:29AM
IF recycled means updated, polished and reworked, then yes, WoW has cheeesed it.
The only things I'd call recycled in all of the Cataclysm are Heroic VC/SFK, which seem to be implemented only because there's been massive amounts of requests for them over the years.
But, clearly, attempting to appeal to your fanbase/customers with long awaited additions and changes (eg. Flying in Azeroth, The aforementioned heroics, Updates to the Old World, Goblins, Worgen) ruins the game.
Suzaku Aug 22nd 2009 2:40PM
If seven entirely new zones, two new races, tons of revamped zones with new quests, a new profession, new alternate advancement system, and more raids planned than Wrath has had released so far counts as "recycled" to you, I want to see what you think original content is.
Shrike Aug 22nd 2009 2:20PM
Yes, because the entire hidden zone of Uldum, The Sunken City of Vashj'ir, Grim Batol/the Twilight Highlands, Deephome and the Elemental Planes, and present-day Mount Hyjal are all old news that have been done to death, and thus all content related to them is also recycled.
Taladan Aug 22nd 2009 8:20AM
I'm scared, in a good way. All this time we took to learn the ins and outs of our classes (well, I did with the classes I play with) and now everything changes.
No defense rating?!? My paladin healing off-spec now needs spirit?!? This is madness! (cue to Sparta references.)
Also, I'm really surprised with the goblins. I thought they wouldn't be good, but their racials are really good for PvE *and* PvP (disengage in arenas? YES, PLEASE!)
It will shake the World of Warcraft as we know it. It will be a new game.
dswible Aug 22nd 2009 8:21AM
I am unhappy about the ripping up of Darkshore. Also, can't they have a program or
barber type addon that will change the character sex. My husband has been playing my girl pally and wants to change the sex so he doesnt feel so girly lol. Its just a template change, geesh
Dragundam Aug 22nd 2009 1:00PM
The character (sex/face/skin) change option is at WoW's website in your Account Options tab.
MusedMoose Aug 22nd 2009 8:21AM
I'm excited about every single damn thing I've heard about Cataclysm so far. I spent about an hour yesterday reading everything on this site I could find from Blizzcon, and was completely geeked out the entire time. It sounds like there are a ton of great changes coming.
I have to say, though, I'm proud of Blizzard for having the guts to make the major changes, especially to old-world Azeroth. I'd imagine there's a lot of bitching out there somewhere by people saying "oh no, now it won't be like we remember it," but I'm glad Blizzard realized that these changes are good for the game and will keep people playing. And hell, it'll be great to go through leveling up a new alt and *gasp!* actually see more than one or two other people in the zone I'm in. Oi.
Malkia Aug 22nd 2009 8:24AM
Leveling alts will be fun...
