Know Your Lore: World of Warcraft Cataclysm Gilneas

Welcome to Know Your Lore, where each week WoW.com brings you a tasty little morsel of lore to wrap your mind around. Sweet, sweet lore. Mmmm. Have suggestions for future KYL topics? Leave a comment below!
The nation of Gilneas is one of the oldest human kingdoms that still exists. Founded after the breaking of the human empire of Arathor, Gilneas was considered one of the great Seven Kingdoms, along with Kul Tiras, Alterac, Dalaran, Lordaeron, Stromgarde, and Stormwind.
Gilneas is located on a rocky peninsula that juts out over the Great Sea on Lordaeron's west coast, southwest of Silverpine Forest. High seaside cliffs keep the kingdom safe from attack by water and the foreboding Greymane Wall keeps it locked safely away from the struggles of modern Lordaeron and, by extension, Azeroth. No one has been allowed in or out of the kingdom for nearly ten years, and no one has seen or heard from the burly, gruff, self-sufficient Gilneans in just as long.
The source of this isolation is none other than Genn Greymane, hereditary ruler of the kingdom under the Greymane Dynasty for decades.
At the advent of the Second War, Gilneas was considered one of the strongest human kingdoms, so much so that Greymane was very resistant in supporting the newly-formed Grand Alliance to battle the Orc threat, thinking Gilneas could easily fend for itself. He eventually caved and entered Gilneas into the Alliance, but argued against its existence for the duration of the Second War. After the war ended, Greymane refused to lend further resources to the Alliance, seeing no reason to keep the orcs in camps instead of, well, dead. It's rumored that Greymane was under the control of Deathwing, who at that time was masquerading as Lord Daval Prestor -- a noble who Greymane supported in his bid for rulership of the kingdom of Alterac.
At the beginning of the Third War, the Greymane Wall was constructed, cutting off all contact with the outside world, leaving Gilneas "free from the troubles of the Alliance". Even starving or injured Alliance refugees outside the wall receive no assistance from those within. The exact reason for sealing off Gilneas was unknown ... until now.

Several years ago, Brann Bronzebeard gravely stated that Gilneas might be, at best, in a state of disarray or, at worst, completely destroyed behind the wall. He fears that the naga have taken over the peninsula, but others point to the worgen threat that surrounds the kingdom as the real reason why Gilneas has gone silent.
And worgen are both the reason and result of this silence. Archmage Arugal, Dalaran resident but Gilneas patron, saw the rise of the Scourge at the beginning of the Third War and, in desperation, summoned a force he didn't fully understand to fight them off -- the feral and unruly worgen.
Ancient texts report that the worgen may have existed for a time on Kalimdor in ages long past, and even hint to their association with a shadowy druidic order, but no solid information can be found besides this. Regardless of their origin, when summoned, the creatures often cannot be controlled, reasoned with, or stood against.
Though the areas's defense against the Scourge was successful for a time, the lupine defenders soon stopped obeying Arugal and spread their curse among the population of Silverpine Forest, unheeding to the commands of their "master". Seeing that his plan had failed, Arugal went mad with grief and adopted a number of the worgen as his "children", holing himself up in the former home of Baron Silverlaine, the castle now known as Shadowfang Keep. Unchecked and uncontrolled, the worgen curse continued to spread, even into the seemingly impenetrable kingdom of Gilneas.
When Deathwing ravaged Azeroth with his Cataclysm, the Greymane Wall was shattered, exposing Gilneas for the first time in a decade. The foggy, rainy kingdom, grim and gothic in its construction and atmosphere, remains visually a great bastion of human civilization -- though the inhabitants were not so lucky.
The worgen curse had infected their residents and promptly spread throughout the kingdom unchecked for several years. Unable to leave the kingdom's walls due to the Scourge threat and unable to sail away due to the deadly, dagger-toothed reef nicknamed The Bite, the citizens of Gilneans withdrew further and further into the territory.
Even with their curse taking its toll on the citizens' sanity, the isolation from the outside world and crippling fear of the Scourge outside their walls has resulted in a kingdom on the brink of civil war. Worse, the Forsaken have realized that the former Alliance nation now has a foothold in Lordaeron -- and will do whatever it takes to keep the new Alliance from establishing a permanent base of operations there. King Genn Greymane, once and future king of Gilneas, now reaches his hand out in acceptance of his previously-maligned Alliance.

I think I'm really going to enjoy this expansion, being back in Azeroth quite excites me. I've leveled up so many characters just because I enjoy Azeroth.

What's up with these copy/paste idiots? This just some sort of advertisement for their website? If so, why bother copy/pasting a previous post? If anything, it seems sketchy at best and makes me wonder what sorts of lovely new viruses their website might be trying to distribute to anyone foolish enough to click the link. =/
Frode Aug 24th 2009 6:47AM
With that grammar I think your place of employment would prefer you _not_ link to them in your posts... It looks like you wrote some other language and ran it through an online translator. A poor one.
Back on topic, I'm not much of a lore fiend, but getting a relatively short and concise summary like this is much appreciated. It adds flavor.

Mmmm so they are situated on a peninsula to block one side with a wall to enclose it from the rest of the landmas. So the one thing that popped into mind was nobody has flown over it? Lore is lore as long as it makes sense. Thats' a big gaping hole unless I've missed something not having gone to that area since launch. Not plugging away at what was written here but just in general if this is all the available information about the area.
Snuzzle Aug 24th 2009 2:31PM
My guess is they'd shoot down anyone who attempted to fly over there. Since all you can use in Azeroth (right now) is taxis, the gryphon and bat masters would soon learn that you don't let your beasts fly over there. Sounds pretty logical to me.

Isn't Kul Tiras still around, making Gilneas one of two remaining nations? I don't remember reading that it got razed? Simply because it isn't represnented physically doesn't mean it it doesn't exist. Jaina's brother is ruling currently I believe.
Omegan01 Aug 24th 2009 3:25PM
Barring a drastic lore-change, yes, Kul Tiras is still out there under the leadership of Tandred Proudmoore, Jaina's brother. I suspect one of the reasons it's been kept out of the game so long is that introducing a virtually untouched, naval-heavy nation would give the Alliance a massive advantage over the Horde.
Drahliana Aug 24th 2009 4:37PM
It WAS a naval heavy nation. What was left at the end of the Third War got trashed in the Battle of Theramore along with Admiral Daelin Proudmoore. I imagine they've been keeping quietly to themselves while the sole remaining Proudmoore son engaged in rebuilding.

Great story, but I think it should be noted near the top that this pretty much spoils some of the Day of the Dragon novel. I had to stop reading a Lord Prestor cause I had just gotten to the part in the book where it revealed he is Deathwing and did not want to be spoiled.

The look of Gilneas has the perfect atmosphere for me as a hordie to don my Headless Horseman's healm and ride around on his mount laughing and scaring all the low level worgen.
But then Worgen will probably be so OP that a freshly rolled one will easily one shot my lvl 85 tank by then! :P
the Brayn Aug 24th 2009 1:43PM
Except that the Worgen are a race not a class.

Jesus Christ it was just a joke! People like you are why I normally post my opinion here and then leave it and move on rather than getting into decent lore and theorycrafting discussion with likeminded people, but this time I thought to myself "hey, it was only a joke I posted, so I'll see what this response is all about... maybe a somthing that'll make me laugh and brighten my day..." How wrong I was.
Now for the customary internet revenge :)
Your social capabilities = fail. Why are you so full of hatred. Why not just accept the joke (no matter how unfunny) and move on? Clearly, pointing out your right makes all your failings seem a little bit smaller. Seriously, why is the internet full of nothing but hatred and one-up-manship? You, sir, are a braggart and a nincompoop! Fly Augustus!

I hereby make no apology for the misplacing of my post. Its connected to my previous one above, and the expression of emotional and literary genious that is its reply.

Player vs. Player
* Battle of Gilneas will be a new battleground where the objective is to control the city by controlling as many districts as possible.
Guys finally what is going on with Gilneas? Will it be a Bg or a Capital City for Alliance?
Nawaf Sep 14th 2009 11:00AM
Gelnaes will not be a city. Gelnaes will be the starting zone for the Worgen. As I've seen in it's map it doesn't have a capital city. Instead, the Worgen will have a Worgen district in Stormwind (similar to trolls in Orgrimmar and Gnomes in Ironforge). It's also rumored that the Gnomes will get a part of Gnomeregan back as their capital city to balance things out between the alliance and the horde.
There is will be a Gelnaes themed BG (WSG is themed for Ashenvale, AB is themed for Arathi highlands, AV is themed for Alterec Mountains). The Alliance battlemasters for that BG will be Worgen, while the Horde battlemasters will be forsaken.
Nawaf Sep 13th 2009 9:15PM
Speak with good purpose Brayn. Elry never said it was a class anyway. Brayn = fail.

Can Know your lore look into this. I was doing brewfest elekk quest and ported to darn with my mage. I noticed there was a NE Mage? The NE Mage had the mage icon on his window cause of my mod. But there was a long conversation with the NE Sentinel about they dont like highborne and etc. Could it be a prelude to the NE mages class?
Franchak Oct 11th 2009 9:21PM
Bothersome question: As goblins and worgens can be death knights, are there going to be any special integration of them into the already existing death knight quest sequence considering that these races are new? This is a rhetorical question as of now, but it's definitely a question for consideration.

Hey Mike,
Its been a while since we saw a Know Your Lore segment so I was hopping this question might give you something to think about.
The Question: My wife is thinking about taking the plunge at buying a WoW Account, but she doesn't want to dive in without knowing about the world she is going to become a part of. By her own admission is in love with good stories and I think Blizzard has done a fantastic job with this, however, I have not found a good site that she can sit down at and read to her hearts content about the world of Azeroth. So where might you suggestion I send to to become the lore junkie she is destined to be?
Thanks,
Aessedai
