The Queue: Nuts and bolts
Oh boy. Most of us are the walking dead after BlizzCon, but let's get back to something resembling normalcy with a Queue. We're going to start off today with an important matter concerning authenticators and account security, then move on to a bit of WoW.com business and Onyxia. I'd also like to direct attention to two really good comments from the last column re: technical issues, Shadow's and Logarth's.Zerounit asks...
I recently got an Authenticator in the mail and I noticed something while I was inspecting it: there appears to be no way to open it short of cracking it open with large objects. Is there a battery life on these? If it stops giving me my magic codes, will I have to get a new one?
I got an authenticator for my own use recently and have to admit I hadn't thought to look into the battery life, which is a very good question indeed. A dead authenticator means you have no way of getting into the game (or even into your online account) without official help from Blizzard.
Turns out the little security doodads are manufactured by a company named Vasco, and after poking around their website, I'm reasonably certain that Blizzard authenticators are a variant of Vasco's DIGIPASS GO 6 model. What makes me so sure? The GO 6 model page is the only one accompanied by an article on fraud and hacking in online gaming. They don't come right out and say that Blizzard is a customer, but unless Hello Kitty Online is a bigger hive of scum and villainy than even we gave it credit for, you don't have to be a genius to figure out that World of Warcraft figures prominently in MMORPG account theft.
Vasco says that the GO 6 model, like most of their mobile authentication devices, is supposed to have a minimum battery life of 7 years. Manufacturers' assurances aside, you can find reports from players who have observed malfunctions or unusually early battery deaths, but honestly, this doesn't appear to be a common problem. As you might expect, authenticators are designed to be user-friendly for the purpose of getting your codes quickly and safely, but they're not designed to be so friendly to someone trying to tamper with them. One player who did manage to crack one open reported that it's doable with a jeweler's screwdriver, but the battery case (at least on a 2008 model) was very resistant to player meddling, even if all you wanted to do is replace the battery.
This may sound like a needless annoyance (and frankly it kind of is, if the only thing the authenticator needs is a new battery), but having to get in touch with Blizzard to replace an authenticator is good design. As a player in another authenticator-related thread observed, authenticators aren't there to help Blizzard security, because Blizzard's never been hacked. They're there to deal with the gaping security hole that so frequently exists between the computer and one's desk chair. If removing an authenticator from your account were easy, then it'd be just as easy for a hacker to remove it as well, which rather defeats the purpose of having one in the first place.
If your authenticator goes on the fritz or the battery dies, call Blizzard's Billing and Account Services department, and they'll remove it from your account after verifying that you are the true owner. This involves providing account details and the serial number of the dead authenticator or, as Sacco writes, a "large amount of very personal information." I'd provide numbers here, but they're different for each region; visit your regional World of Warcraft website and go to the options located under the Support bar. If you clicked through the last forum thread linked in the paragraph above, you'll have seen a player who had to replace an authenticator noting that the process took only 2 hours from start to finish (and that was on a patch day). Authenticators are still in stock at the Blizzard Store (go to the More Products tab up at the top right), and unless you are 100% sure of your account's security and your ability never to get keylogged or hacked, you're probably best off getting one.
Tyranas scolds...
Get off the (New Jersey) Turnpike sometime, and stay away from Camden and the whole Newark area, and you'll see we do actually deserve the name "Garden State."
There are parts of New Jersey that aren't the Turnpike? State your sources!
Tatsumasa asks...
Why is the Queue posted so infrequently?
Adam and Alex are the two usual authors, but they have the bad luck to be two of our editors (ha ha! Sucks to be them!). If something else has come up on the site (and not infrequently it's business that never actually appears on the site), the Queue is the inevitable casualty of their having to be elsewhere. Now, if a column author (someone who has a weekly commitment to write a particular feature) can't be here in a given week, it's easy for them to reschedule it or ask someone else to cover it. By contrast, as the Queue is a daily feature, if something comes up it's a lot harder to give it to another writer because there's never much notice.
We've had particular trouble lately due to the release of patch 3.2 and the run-up to BlizzCon, all of which took a lot of time behind the scenes here. Eagle-eyed readers have already noticed that Cataclysm, Goblin, and Worgen categories went up on the site suspiciously fast....which I guess, in a roundabout way, is an oblique answer to Valaro's question.
Nevertheless, the Queue and its predecessor, Ask A Beta Tester (which you'll see reappear on the site when Cataclysm hits beta) are easily among our favorite things to write. Things should settle down in the near future, and it'll resume a normal schedule. We do apologize for the disruption along the way.
RothKeahi asks...
Inquiring Mages want to know! Is the new and improved Ony still resistant to fire?
The reports I've seen from players on the PTR all say that she no longer has any immunity to Fire spells or effects. Wowwiki is reporting the same thing.

"There are parts of New Jersey that aren't the Turnpike?"
Plenty! There's also the Garden State Parkway. You may remember it as the highway where you wait and wait and wait to get through a tollbooth, and when you finally do.... ANOTHER TOLLBOOTH!

A thought occurred to me, What about heirlooms?
With the changes to gear (i.e. removed of SP, AP, MP5) and getting what we need for classes out of stats (STR, AGI, INT, SPI) What will they do for heirlooms? I am assuming that INT in Cataclysm will follow the same formula as STR and AGI (2 per one point of the base stat).
If you put the 29 SP on the Dignified Headmasters Charge, in the expansion that would be 15 INT, whereas you can put 22 INT on the staff to see an overall dps increase.
I know its probably too early on to be speculating on this, but I was curious if they did mention how INT would stack and if/what anything would happen to heirlooms that grant SP and AP right now.
Sorry for the wall of text, hope my thoughts make sense!

I think it is too early as well, but that has never stopped me speculating.
The changes to stats will have to affect all current gear when the content patch 4.0.1 is released. All those enchantments that gave Spellpower will either disappear or be replaced by a corresponding Intelligence one.
You are probably right in the highest Int chant with no level restriction, Mighty Intellect, will give more Spellpower than the current Spellpower chant.
Current heirlooms have a level range of 1-80 and I imagine they will stop working once you hit 81. However that is a nice boost for 20% of the new levels so they will probably nerf further and turn off the experience boost after 80.
Super Healer Aug 24th 2009 10:34AM
I have a question about the new expansions zone levels. I have checked the info and I dont think they have released detailed information about the new zone levels. I am wondering if when we reach level 58 or 60 in "New Azeroth" we have to level through Outland and Northrend before going back to Azeroth to level from 80 to 85, or will we be able to level straight through to 85 with new lvl 60-80 zones in Azeroth? I'm assuming the former otherwise Outland and Northrend really would be empty...!
Also should I be correct in assuming that when Cataclysm is here the levelling in Northrend will be speeded up like pre Wrath content?
Frode Aug 24th 2009 10:42AM
They have stated the new zones (not counting the new starter areas for the new races), are 78-85. They are making a number of changes to the 1-60 range too though, when it comes to quests. So leveling 1-60 will be different from before, not just in the scenery you are running through.
As far as simplifying Northrend like they have Outlands (and 1-60 Azeroth), I don't think they have specifically mentioned it, but I think it's a given. Outlands was dumbed down just prior to Wrath release, so I would think the same will be true for Northrend come Cataclysm.

What about the phone version then, what if somehow my phone died and I couldn't recover that software? Would I be shagged ?

my post Blizzcon questions
1. Will there be a pre catacysm loremaster as a feat of strength and a new one for xpac?
2. Will we need to pay to a)fly in azeroth or b)underwater
3. What will be done to curb ninjas in Crossfaction LFG
4. Will all classes/races use the new starting areas.
5. Any chance for LFG to include "any heroic" etc like it did for a second on PTR
6. Will guilds start with XP based on their current deeds?
7. Is the % loot of boss gold that goes to guild bank in addition or is the rest of the guild getting taxed?
8. Do you think we actually will see some form of post arthas 3.4 patch that leads into the xpac somehow.(like the scourge thing only moreso)
9. Any chance we will ever see some pvp meaning to jousting.
10. Why do hot dogs come in packs of 10 but buns in packs of 8
Cyrus Aug 24th 2009 11:47AM
"2. Will we need to pay to a)fly in azeroth or b)underwater"
As for (a), I have no idea; I assume so, but I have no way of knowing, and maybe they'll figure that flight training plus cold weather flight training is expensive enough. I doubt (b) will be possible. Water mounts already exist (which only need normal speed land mount training), so they'll probably add more of those rather than make our existing flying mounts able to fly underwater.
"3. What will be done to curb ninjas in Crossfaction LFG"
This doesn't make any sense. I assume you mean cross-server LFG? If so, I don't know for sure, but I assume the LFG channel will be cross-server as well, and if so people will be able to warn each other there.
"4. Will all classes/races use the new starting areas."
This doesn't make any sense either. Worgen of all classes and goblins of all classes will use the worgen starting area and goblin starting area, respectively, same for draenei of all classes and orcs of all classes and so on, except for death knights. Are you asking if characters not of those races will be able to go there? Well, I'm tempted to say "definitely," just like all characters can go to the blood elf starting area and all that. But now that I think of it, only death knights can go to the death knight training area, and there are some draenei-only quests in the draenei starting area, so I guess other races MIGHT not be able to go to Gilneas and the goblin islands, and there will probably be SOME storyline-centric stuff that's unique to those races. Overall, though, they should be open to everyone.
"8. Do you think we actually will see some form of post arthas 3.4 patch that leads into the xpac somehow.(like the scourge thing only moreso)"
Arthas and Icecrown are supposed to be added in patch 3.3. There will probably be a patch leading in to the expansion, like there was for WotLK and BC, but it would probably be numbered 4.0.x.
Blacksword Aug 24th 2009 12:49PM
2)I I request, no demand, an engineering underwater mount. Go go gnomish sub
7) The way I read it people wont be getting taxed. The way it looks like it is going to work is if you loot 100g from a boss, the guild bank will get 5g as a bonus. Effectively the boss will have dropped 105 gold.
8) Im guessing so, and I am thinking we will see a large world wide event like the zombie plague for it as well.
10) That knowledge, like all cthonic knowledge, would drive you MAD

With the end of Season 6 nigh, can we expect the season 6 gear to be available for purchase once Season 7 has started?

Were there any announcements/plans for blizzard to finally support DX10 or x64 systems in the new expansion?
nieboh Aug 24th 2009 11:02AM
The news about, well, everything from Blizzcon was enlightening and inspiring. But, I've looked through all of the Q&A posts and just about everything else that came from the con, but there never seems to be a time frame associated with the news. I just wonder if something was said about an approximate time frame for the x-faction transfers going into place? (obviously I don't expect the date and time, but maybe a month?)
Bronwyn Aug 24th 2009 2:08PM
Blizzard is really careful not to release time frames for things until they really know they have something ready or close to ready. I don't remember where I heard this, possibly a blizzcon panel or possibly I am making that up, but I think they are aiming for patch 3.3...
I've also heard rumours that it will come out in the anniversary patch but I don't recall getting ANY indication of that from Blizzard.
Anyway, when they talk about it, it seems there are still a lot of logistics to work out so I would not count on it until at least Icecrown (patch 3.3)
Gossamer Aug 24th 2009 11:34AM
Does anyone have any idea why I can't view the various tournaments on the video archive page? They look like it's possible they aren't up yet, but I was under the impression from the live stream that these were up as soon as the tournament was over. Can anyone else access them?

two 3.3-related questions, and one Cat-related question
Do you think we'll see a change to emblems in 3.3 likes we did in 3.2? All the heroics and pre-icecrown dungeons will drop triumph emblems?
Where have the Forsaken been, lorewise? After the Wrath Gate incident, they seemed to fall by the wayside. The Hand of Vengeance doesn't make any appearances past Dragonblight, Sylvanas doesn't show up either in the Ulduar video, nor is she present at the Argent Tournament. I would be rather annoyed if she and the Forsaken don't play a significant part when the time comes to break into the Icecrown Citadel.
Was there any confirmation, or at least a hint, if Azshara herself is going to be a raid boss in Cat? Seems like a rather big baddie to overlook, if they're doing a Maelstrom-focused expansion.
Kia Aug 24th 2009 12:06PM
Don't call it Cat. Jesus. I'm sitting here thinking you're talking about Kel'thuzad's cat or something.
Skrotus Aug 24th 2009 12:09PM
I think I recall it being mentioned at blizzcon that sylvanis and jaina will be involved in the arthas fight, but I may be mistaken
Kia Aug 24th 2009 11:57AM
Here's a question: Not entirely game related, but for those of you who play with your significant others, what's a good complimentary pair of classes?
My girlfriend who's long-hated WoW is finally giving it another try, and I'd like a duo that'd work best together. Preferably no Paladin or Warrior for me, and no Warlock or Paladin for her. :)
Gossamer Aug 24th 2009 12:01PM
I've found that a Druid/Shaman pairing can be fun and compliments each other well, as well as offers a larger range of experiences for your girlfriend who is probably not sure what role she wants to play. I recommend she plays the Druid, unless she expresses interest in something else. This way she can try out tanking, melee dpsing, caster/range dpsing and healing all in one handy dandy character. Plus, if she's anything like me, she'll love the customizations of the cute kitty and bear forms!
Holybear Aug 24th 2009 12:45PM
As a person who leveled at least 3 pairs in a couple to level cap, I'd suggest going with a pure tank (spec, gear, etc., and they do quite a damage now!) and a hybrid dps capable of healing. This will allow you to do just about everything (we couldn't do only group-5 along the way) without much slowdown.
When it comes to specific classes, the last pair we did was feral druid (with SotF) and elemental shammy, which worked like a sharm. Basically you can do warr/pally/druid as a tank and priest/shammy/druid/pally as a healer, in any combination, really.
