The
announcement that Future and Blizzard are teaming up to produce
World of Warcraft: The Magazine surprised almost everyone, I think. No more so because of the undeniable shift from print to digital media. However the fact that Blizzard is involved and the promise of no adverts and a "coffee table" kind of feel makes this very appealing. Granted the subscription is a little high, especially when you consider you're only getting four issues for your cash and yet I think a lot of people are going to sign up. I'm probably going to be one of them.
As a fanbase, we're know for collecting shiny things to do with our game of choice, whether it's a
Wrath Collector's Edition or a
Starcraft II messenger bag. Personally my thing is artbooks: I've got the whole set from the
Art of the World of Warcraft to the
Cinematic Artbook from last year's BlizzCon so the idea of a magazine loaded with artwork and interviews and all that jazz makes me very excited. What about you, constant readers, will you be tempted to subscribe?

Legance Aug 25th 2009 8:52AM

mtsadowski Aug 25th 2009 10:28AM
Me too.
This reminds me of the Nintendo Fun Club. Anyone remember that?
Neofox Aug 25th 2009 2:24PM

"The Magazine is published four (4) times a year."
(taken from: https://www.worldofwarcraftthemagazine.com/terms-of-use.php )
So about $10 an issue. Owch.
I might subscribe, but they'll have some work cut out for them pursuading me to.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Aug 25th 2009 4:12PM
I wonder why they can't just include it in the subscription fee - god knows we already pay enough and then some if we're people who like to constantly name name, gender change, race and faction change....etc etc...
10 bucks for a magazine... it better be hard cover.

I keep trying to subscribe, the every time I get to the credit-card form the site gives me an error. I took a screenshot if anybody knows where I should send it. I want this magazine, dangit!
Komorado Aug 25th 2009 8:06AM
Why pay when you can probally find it on the internet the very afternoon its been recieved by subscribers?
Narshe Aug 25th 2009 8:14AM
Exactly, online content is free so why pay outrageous prices for a trade publication with paper costs skyrocketing.

Its all about the collectable value of the magazine. I would much rather actually own the magazine, then have to read 148 pages offline any day.
Gerik Aug 25th 2009 9:19AM
There's no way the magazine isn't going to use its relationship with Blizzard to score exclusives. I'm expecting sneak peeks at Cataclysm, interviews with developers, behind the scenes photos, etc.
impurezero Aug 25th 2009 11:45AM
Sure, any "breaking new information" will show up on the internet in some form, and if that's all you're concerned about, by all means stick to just the internet and you'll be set.
However, it sounds like this will likely include additional lore discussions, full interviews, in depth discussions and various other things that sites like this won't print. You really think that wow.com is going to spend 50 blog posts just reposting everything from the magazine? I guarantee you that for the fans, there will be additional things printed that won't end up all over the internet just because it doesn't qualify as "new Cataclysm info."
Don't fool yourself. The entire magazine WILL NOT end up on the internet the next day. Any private sites that DO try to do such a thing will likely have a bit of trouble explaining their disregard for copyright laws.
This isn't intended to be a sole source of wow "news" for anyone. It's supposed to be a fun collectable thing that you can read on the porch. If you're not buying it, it's because that doesn't appeal to you, but some of these commenters need to drop the pretentious implications that those who subscribe are somehow stupid and just don't understand the existance of the internet.
Moco64 Aug 25th 2009 12:26PM
To the person who said it wouldn't be available the next day.
Don't fool yourself, this is the internet where entire books get posted online before it hits shelves. Where games and music cds get posted weeks before they hit shelves. Mangas, Comic books, etc readily available in pdf format.
WoW is popular and groups/people will scramble to scan every page ASAP to get their online 'cred'.
I guarantee it. Still, Im subscribing because nothing beats holding the actual book in your hands. I'll still DL it if it comes online while its getting shipped though. 10$ a mag isn't bad for the amount thats in it.
Did they said it would be hardcover?
Eisengel Aug 25th 2009 12:35PM
That is my reasoning. I'm more interested in the news itself than the format it is delivered in, so if I can get it for free, all the better. If you're interested in the collectible aspect and other features of actually owning some publication though, more power to you.
impurezero Aug 25th 2009 1:04PM
Moko,
Yeah, I guess I should have clarified a bit better. I meant more that it will not be posted in full on sites like wow.com, etc. Sure there will be bootleggers, as always, but most of the comments I had read were talking not about downloading bootleg .pdfs, but about getting the information on sites such as this one. You're right that it "will" be available the next day...just not from any legitamate sources.
Wipeman Aug 25th 2009 4:33PM
I will buy the magazine. And it's not becuse i hate internet or i am a collector. It's just that those pixels on your screen cannot be actually compared to this classy feeling of that 148 page high quality paper magazine being held in your hands. It just feels better.
Daniel Aug 25th 2009 8:07AM
I think it's an excellent idea. Being a quarterly magazine I'm sure I'll forget about my subscription and come home to find a lovely suprise in the mail. Oh, and they deliver to Australia too!
Abbadon Aug 25th 2009 8:39AM
You'll forget about it. Then you'll see all this new info posted online citing the magazine as the source. Being in Australia, you'll get your now expected magazine in the mail a few days later, and it will go straight to the recycle bin (except for the exclusive, subscriber only poster available no where else)!
No offense, but like several other posts already... I just don't see the value of magazines in this day and age other than the fact it's easier to take them to the crapper than a PC.
However, I have no doubt that there will be a lot of subscribers as most of us are rabid fanboys to some extent or another. And if they don't hit the numbers they were expecting, I'm sure they'll tie in an exclusive ingame pet or mount. Then the rest of us will come running.
jfield Aug 25th 2009 8:06AM
Already did! I'm a sucker =/
Kendaluk Aug 25th 2009 9:29AM
Question: will it be availble in the UK?
