BlizzCon 2009: Laguna Art Museum VIP dinner (Attn: Lore nerds)
When I found out that my friend Joe Gilbert AKA Kyliaar from the U.S. realm Destromath was attending the Laguna Art Museum VIP dinner on the eve of BlizzCon, I said "Get pictures and ask questions!" Happily, he did both.
For those of you who don't know, Blizzard held a benefit dinner for the Laguna Art Museum, which is also currently hosting a WoW art exhibit. Attendees got to choose a Blizzard personality to speak with at their table, bid on Blizzard art and hang out with the biggest Blizzard names. Following is an excerpt from my chat with Joe about the event (I've tried to edit out most of the fangirl swooning), as well as a gallery of his photographs.
How did you get tickets?
There was an announcement on worldofwarcraft.com about the dinner and that they were raffling chances to buy a ticket. I signed up immediately. Several weeks later, I got an email that I had won the raffle.
How much were the tickets?
$500 a head.
What was included?
BlizzCon tickets and goody bag, a signed piece of art, Sindragosa by Wei Wang, and tickets to the museum exhibit.
And of course dinner and an open bar.
Yup.
And you brought your guild leader with you?
Yes. Our guild got together to pay for his ticket.
Where was the event held?
In the Hilton, right next door to the convention center.
Did you win any of the silent auctions?
No. I only bid on one piece and I think the ending price was almost double what I bid.
For those of us living vicariously, what did you eat?
Shrimp, oysters, pasta, roast beef, turkey.
Sounds like a feast. Was it good?
It was buffet style and yes, it was good. How can food not be good with an open bar?
Good point. So your table chose to speak to Carlos Guerrero, a Blizzard producer. What did you talk to him about?
I asked him about the problems we have seen on Destromath with not being able to launch the Wrath of the Lich King 5 man instances. It was explained that each realm needs maintenance to increase capacity and they are doing them as they can.
We talked generally about how WoW has improved over the years. Carlos asked us about our memorable moments and he was able to share his own. I started to ask him about lore and he told me i needed to speak to this lady, Evelyn.
Evelyn Fredericksen?
Yes. She is in Creative Development and is referred to as "Chris Metzen's database". Essentially, her job is to fact and continuity check all the lore that Chris throws out. She gives classes at Blizzard to people as they begin working on projects and covers Diablo and Starcraft, too.
And you got to speak to Chris Metzen, too? (Swoons with fangirl glee.)
Right at the end of the night, I got to the point where Evelyn started pointing me to Chris because I was asking about things that haven't been clarified. I believe I was told that I might just prompt Metzen to make up lore on the spot. I actually went over and started talking to Mike first.
Morhaime?
He was hanging out with the lead singer from L80ETC.
Samwise?
Yes, Samwise. Mike wanted to hear what my question was and maybe he could answer it. So I launched into my speech about the connection between The Old Gods and Lovecraft and pretty quickly he was pointing me at Metzen. I waited politely while Metzen was discussing what seemed to be a creative venture with one of the attendees.
Before I got to ask my question, Mike Morhaime signaled Chris that it was time to go. Chris made his apologies for having to leave and that his ride/boss asked him to go. I was actually behind him -- he was talking to a half circle of about five people at that point. He turned to me last, shook my hand and asked me my name. I said, "I have a quick lore question, but i guess it can wait until tomorrow." But he stopped and told me to ask.
Note: This was before the Cataclysm announcement, as this event took place the night before the con.
I asked him about The Old God influence on a larger scale and on Azeroth. For instance, are they behind the corruption of Deathwing and Sargeras? Chris said something like, "Hmm... wouldn't the Naaru be concerned about that?" and smiled.
He also referred to Azeroth as a 'prime material' world and asked me whether it was plausible that other prime material worlds carried similar 'taints'. Prime material is a D&D term for the plane that mortals live on.
He chided me quite harshly for saying "See-thun": "C'mon, man! C'Thun... Cthulu... c'mon!"
If you had the opportunity to go to another one of these next year, would you?
Hell yes! Without a doubt. It was even more special than BlizzCon.

One of my favorite parts about watching BlizzCon during the internet stream was actually hearing the developers say some of the names of characters and places, to see how close I was with my own pronunciations. Blizzard could release a dictionary and I'd be more than happy to pick it up.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] Aug 27th 2009 4:24PM
Ditto on that one.
Like a "Tome of Pronunciation" or something.

That shirt is P-I-M-P PIMP!
Gessilea Aug 27th 2009 4:28PM
Aw man, I want Evelyn Fredericksen's job SO BAD. That would be my ultimate geeky creative dream job.
She's also totally rocking the troll braids there.
Robin Torres Aug 27th 2009 4:35PM
Totally. She just LOOKS like The Lore Lady.
Rubitard Aug 27th 2009 4:49PM
Do you get the impression if you asked her to order off the menu in Elvish she'd do it?
Gessilea Aug 27th 2009 4:54PM
@Rubitard: I think she'd probably first ask if you meant Darnassian, Thalassian, Quenya, Sindarin, Eltharin or Sperethiel.

I remember her from the Lich King CE DVD :D

lol
Riltia Aug 27th 2009 5:40PM
She's... cute. I saw her on the WotLK CE DVD and she seems like a really nice person. You could talk to her for hours about Warcraft and never get bored, I bet!
tigress Aug 28th 2009 1:01PM
Ha yeah! After watching her on the WOTLK DVD I turned to my boyfriend and said, "that woman really loves her job." You could just see it in her face as she was talking about everything.
And working with Metzen? Nice job perk ;)

Uhm... sorry... but... wth?
"I asked him about The Old God influence on a larger scale and on Azeroth. For instance, are they behind the corruption of Deathwing"
It has already been established (ie. in War of the Ancients and countless other times) that the Old Gods are the ones that corrupted Neltharion/drove him mad. Why waste the precious opportunity to ask the master of lore himself something on something that has already been established?
Kyliaar Aug 27th 2009 6:09PM
"and Sargeras? "
Focusing on Deathwing's corruption really skews what my question actually was. Specifically, I had asked if beings like the Old Gods were working on a cosmic scale and behind Sargeras's corruption, the Burning Legion and other notable examples of corruption, such as Deathwing and Arthas. Thorim and the other watchers in Ulduar are the most concrete example of Old God influence currently in game.
War of the Ancients speaks of a voice whispering to Deathwing, I believe, with no clarification as to what that voice is. Azshara heard a similar whispering during the Sundering. Knowing WoW lore, there are relatively few choices as to what was whispering.
Once again, though, my question was focused more on the scope of the Old Gods influence beyond Azeroth, rather than just Deathwing.
nonentity Aug 28th 2009 1:38AM
Yeah, the Sargeras-Part is not a problem, although I don't think the Old Gods got anything to do with it.
In War of the Ancients they speak of "the voices" and later establish the connection that the voices are the Old Gods, by stating that
a) the Old Gods caused the ... rift in time, the anomaly (forgot the actual word they used)
b) when Deathwing defied their whispers and wanted to get the Dragon Soul back, which went against their plan, "the voices" whispered "Away... Away...".
Deathwing "[he] sensed their outrage that he would not obey them".
"Under their outrage, however, Neltharion also noted growing anxiety, even fear. The voices, too, saw that he had almost reached the his [yeah, error there, written in the book] creation. Perhaps they unerstood that when it came back into his possession, he would punish them along with all the rest."
page 295/296 (in my paperback)
Also, on WoWWiki it is also stated that he was influenced by the Old Gods, due to being the Earth Warder, being so connected to the Earth in which they are imprisoned and so and I assume they got that from an official force. I believe part of that is even also mentioned in War of the Ancients.
Personally, I don't think the Old Gods have any influence outside Azeroth.
I'm sorry if my post sounded a bit hostile, I stand by what I said, maybe not by how I said it.
I just know that, if I had a chance to meet the Blizzard guys, specifically Metzen (and apparently "his database" :D) I'd totally geek out and spend days before the meeting getting up-to-date on the Lore etc. and hopefully think of some really awesome quesion.
Congratulations on that opportunity, I just wish you had asked something else. ;P Like the whole Thrall-(back then, before the announcement)-rumor or what's in store for Med'an, the "Savior of Azeroth" etc. But that's just my priorities.
nonentity Aug 28th 2009 1:40AM
oh, of course, I forgot
c) Nozdormu actually discovering the whole Old Gold connection himself
Kyliaar Aug 28th 2009 3:25AM
I didn't really know what I was to prepare for. This dinner way exceeded any expectations that I had. I had no idea I was going to have personal conversations with anyone important.
Having said that, you say you doubt the Old Gods have any influence outside of Azeroth. I very much agree with this statement. However, if you look at Lovecraft lore, C'Thulu, Yogg' Saron, etc. are fairly low level beings in this whole mythos. They are so defined in their sphere of power that they merely deal with a single planet.
There are multiple heirarchies above them and in true Lovecraft mythos, these are the elder beings... their very nature being so inhumanly understandable that any sort of contact can drive you insane. Hmm... sounds like a Yogg'Saroth mechanic, doesn't it.
I was asking very specifically along these lines. We all know the Old Gods were imprisoned by the Titans. However, these are relatively lowly servants of a higher master. This where Chris Metzen's Naaru response came in... not regarding Sargeras.
However, even then... what drove Sargeras mad? He was out fighting the Burning Legion thoughout the cosmos, not digging around in the underdepths of Azeroth.
nonentity Aug 28th 2009 3:49AM
I don't really know a lot about C'Thulu etc. I read only one book dealing with that lore, ages ago.
The official Lore around Sargeras going mad is, roughly, that he was driven mad by fighting the evil of the universe for aeons.
Seeing all this evil for so long just... broke him, his mind and he turned 180°.
Yeah, not the strongest explanation, but about as good as any in Warcraft Lore. I love it, but one has to admit there are some fairly weak explanations for some stuff.
Joseph Gilbert Aug 28th 2009 3:54AM
Also, I did ask a lot about Med'an and Evelyn filled in all the blanks of existing lore there. However, that is an area where you are basically asking for spoilers which they were not handing out that night.
I was very happy to talk directly to Chris and get some pretty direct insight as to his influences. He is passionate about lovecraft, very knowledgable about D&D and loves Norse mythology evidently. Heh.
One last nugget that Evelyn hung out there for us on the whole guardian thing was that a) Sargeras has yet to be seen since Medivh's death and b) the family resemblance between Medivh and Med'an has been mentioned. This was after she talked about how Sargeras had possessed/tainted/hid inside of/whatever Aegwynn before she had Medivh and passed it on that way. Can this be leading somewhere? She directly stated that it was possible that Med'an was a descendant of Medivh. How's that for a savior?
Note: I did not intentionally sandbag this. There was a lot of data thrown around and as I look at different parts of the lore, things sift around and gain new importance.
So, I guess I did got some info you would have been interested in.
Kyliaar Aug 28th 2009 3:54AM
Accidentally changed names on you. The above post is mine.
Kyliaar Aug 28th 2009 3:56AM
>> Seeing all this evil for so long just... broke him, his mind and he turned 180°.
Doesn't that sound a lot like the influence of the old gods?
