BlizzCon in the rearview
BlizzCon 2009 is behind us, and over on the forums, Irhabi has reached the conclusion that he won't be going next year. He says that with everything streaming out onto DirecTV and the Internet, and with no beta access included, and (what he thought was) a less than stellar performance by Ozzy Osbourne, he might as well stayed at home. I don't particularly share his opinion -- there are lots of great reasons to go to BlizzCon, from getting to try out the latest builds of Blizzard's upcoming games, to meeting vendors and other fans on the floor, to getting the chance to ask your own questions of the devs (and maybe even meet some of them at the various parties around Anaheim). If you're just bummed that BlizzCon was lame because you didn't get a beta key this year, maybe you should have wandered the show floor a little bit.On the other side of it, the folks who bought the DirecTV stream at home are a little more split on the subject -- we twittered to get some responses, and they run the gamut from "yes, it was worth it with the pet," to "no, they should have covered WoW more" (not only did the feed cut off halfway through the contest on Friday night -- we later heard from DirecTV employees that they could only broadcast a certain number of hours over the weekend, and that's where they made the cut -- but they also skipped a few big WoW panels for Starcraft coverage on the main stage instead). And don't even get us started on Jo Garcia, lovely and well-meaning though she may be (though Jay Mohr doesn't deserve the crap he's getting -- he did a respectable job this year). Fortunately, there were lots of other outlets to get your WoW news from, and odds are that Grunty will soothe your pains from the $40 you might feel you've wasted.
As for next year? Blizzard can't use much more of that convention center, so 20,000 is probably their limit for attendance (unless they go East Coast...), and given that DirecTV still made plenty of money, they'll probably be back, maybe with expanded coverage (one idea going around is to have a few channels and let you choose what to watch, and that definitely seems like a possibility). We're sure about one thing -- if they do plan to hold it in 2010, it'll still be an absolute blast either way.

Eh, it was okay but a lot of things disappointed me. The cutting of certain panels on the live feed, the lack of news about classes other than warlock and hunter, sticking the biggest wow panel of all on a side stage while the main stage was half full with starcraft stuff going on, and the generally poor quality of the feed.
cary Aug 27th 2009 8:32PM
Because it was BLIZZcon, not WOWcon.
Bronwyn Aug 28th 2009 11:12AM
@Cary
I think most of us are smart enough to realize that, but there's no reason they couldn't somehow work other panels in, or have multiple channels- I'm sure they can afford it given that OODLES of people ordered the stream.
Come on, wouldn't you be frustrated if you spent money on something and only got to see half of what you had hoped?

What is it with WoW players and bitching and moaning?
tonedeff Aug 27th 2009 7:14PM
Because most plays think that blizzard works for them!
Deadly. Off. Topic. Aug 28th 2009 11:25AM
It's not that they think Blizzard works for them (although I can see why some people may think that as they pay subscription fee each month), it's because it's human nature to be a dick and say absolutely anything when you have anonymity on the internet.
tonedeff Aug 27th 2009 7:12PM
I didn't see the need to pay to wathc bits of it on TVstream. Since sites like this one and many others have every little detail of blizzcon and all the info I want/need!

Sucks that Jay isn't returning.
swampsquatch Aug 27th 2009 7:22PM
I thought Jay was funny as hell. So funny in fact, I will be seeing him next weekend in Houston.
traptinacivicsi Aug 28th 2009 9:53AM
He isn't, where was this said? It was my first year seeing him :(

I am sorry but there are other games out there other then wow. Wow has already delayed starcraft 2 enough.. i am a fan of both games but enough is enough.. wow has gotten 3 expansions and starcraft 2 and diablo have been getting dust.. you complain about wow not getting enough coverage....... i don't hear much about starcraft two and what little i did hear was drowned out by cataclysm news and previews.. don't get me wrong but i want my SC2 fix as well as wow.
Rant over.. i think the pet was cool and no i did not order a stream to blizzcon as i would not have had time to watch it.
swampsquatch Aug 27th 2009 7:26PM
Well maybe you should go to starcraftinsider.com to find news about starcraft (sarcasm), or the official starcraft website.
There was PLENTY of news about all 3 games. You would know that had you ordered the stream or attended Blizzcon...
ADX Aug 27th 2009 7:28PM
yes but even this site reported that they were splitting hairs on the development teams and sending people from the other two franchises to work on WoW.. some people only play starcraft 2 or diablo 3 and are getting impatient with this sort of treatment. It seems as though blizzard is only focused on one of there games right now and they still have not announced a new starcraft 2 beta.....
jonthebaptis Aug 27th 2009 8:28PM
You apparently don't understand how game development works. Blizzard doesn't have just one development team that has to share time over each game they own. They are separate teams that work on different parts of a single game. SC and Diablo have their own teams working at their own pace. WoW's expansions have nothing to do with the development of those games.
jfofla Aug 27th 2009 8:26PM
There may not be a Cow Level....
But there is a CASH COW, so that is what they are focused on.
jfofla Aug 27th 2009 7:13PM
Let's see....
We will gather a group of WOW players, the most ungrateful gaming community man has ever known, and then find out some of them are complaining?
I have been to all four Blizzcons. Each one was awesome. I would not have traded anything for the moment when the Cataclysm video rolled.
Ozzy was great! What do you want from an aging rocker?
I think all the complainers should not go again next year. It will make it easier for me to get tickets.

That's all I got from the live stream all Day 1. Day 2 was much better but still not good enough =(

Jay Mohr did NOT do a respectable job, and I'm pretty sure he was sloshed, and I'm also pretty sure he didn't WANT to return next year which is probably why he did so badly.
Ravdoss Aug 27th 2009 7:22PM
I watched via the live stream and I liked it alot vs. spending nearly $400+ to actually be in Anaheim those two days. The absence of a couple panels wasn't that big of a deal for me, I would've liked to see more of the tournament footage which they showed just a snip of and The Guild panel but I understand that wasn't directly Blizz so it didn't take precedence. My feed quality was excellent and anyone that had a lesser than experience in that regard probably has their connection or their pc (both?) to blame. It was great fun for me and I'd easily do it again.
Gaseraki Aug 28th 2009 4:31AM
Not true, I have a new pc and fibre optic internet. The video was choppy. I could see that my internet had more then enough bandwidth for the stream but it was always laggy during the warcraft panels. When the presenters were talking to pass the time it was fine. Then wow panel and OMG LAG. Im happy because I just rewatched the parts I wanted on the catch up thing. So not anoyed.
Regarding blizzcon, I would love to go but I see no point. Living in England its just too far to travel. I would pay a small fortune for the travel. Then for Hotels. Then of course for the amount of blizzard merchandise while im there. I was debating going next year but TBH id rather go to Brazil.
But I agree that it might not be fair to get the same pet. But I am glad that I got a bite of blizzcon even though im 5,500 miles away.
