What does Blizzard have planned for a Cataclysm in-game launch event?

Is anyone else excited? I certainly am and it gives us something to focus on during the inevitable wait. To be fair, at least Cataclysm's not scheduled for 2012! We don't have that long to wait, we could be rolling Worgen and Goblins in just under/over a year's time. That just about makes it bearable. But it also leaves us with time to think about what Blizzard will do to introduce players to this brave new world.
Hit the jump to find out what we think could well happen prior to the launch of Cataclysm. From what we know of World of Warcraft's third expansion, things are going to change. Deathwing is going to return to the world and it's not going to be pretty. This presents a unique opportunity to an amazing in-game launch, we're not just talking special events or mobs to kill, we're talking something much bigger. For example, the starting quests for the Worgen in Gilneas mention a series of earthquakes so it's not exactly a giant leap to suggest Deathwing isn't just to launch himself back into Azeroth, there are going to be birth pangs first.
So, perhaps a month or maybe a week before launch, earthquakes could begin shaking Azeroth. These could begin as nothing more than brief tremors and gradually grow to pose a serious danger to anyone in the locality. Sections of towns and cities could start to shake, with weaker buildings partially collapsing. The faction leaders might request the aid of Azeroth's heroes in finding out exactly what's going on, sending them to the source of the quakes: Grim Batol in the Wetlands (or the Twilight Highlands, as it will be known post-Cataclysm). Blizzard might even decide to make it a quest hub where the Red Dragonflight is trying to figure out what is happening as they are pushed back by the Blacks. Perhaps we'll see more appearences of the Twilight Dragonflight or even the opening of other Sanctums in the Chamber of Aspects which will some how tie into the storyline of the new expansion and expand the lore.

But these quakes could also help explain the changes coming to the capital cities. During the preview panel at BlizzCon, it was announced that all the cities would be altered so you could fly in and over them. The top-side of the Undercity, for example, will look more impressive, as befitting the former palace and city of Lordaeron. Stormwind will also change, getting a new district where Gilneas will find a home, and I imagine the other cities like Ironforge and Darnassus will get similar makeovers. From a lore perspective though, the earthquakes could make perfect sense. If the severity were to increase, it could damage sections of the cities forcing the inhabitants to rebuild and change the city for the better, even if some of those are only cosmetic.
I do think it's very important that the Cataclysm doesn't just sneak up upon us. We know it's coming but for the inhabitants of Azeroth it's going to be something of a shock. There will be panic and confusion, maybe seers get glimpses of what's coming but, more than likely, it's going to hit them hard. We might even be so busy dealing with Arthas, as suggested in the cinematic, that we might miss it entirely. On a more mundane level, the Twilight's Hammer could rise up and attack strategic points, much like the appearance of the Necropoleis seen just before Wrath. I would like to think the chaos of this time will allow Deathwing's minion's to have a serious effect on the tenuous harmony of Azeroth.
Perhaps a cult will appear in the cities which will speak of the coming Cataclysm, it might be a ruse by the Twilight's Hammer or a subtle announcement that the end is indeed coming. A way of rubbing their impending doom in the faces of the Horde and the Alliance. We know the Twilight's Hammer clan as a defensive sect who attack anyone who stumbles on their lair but what if they tried to be sneaky for once. They could speak in riddles of the coming end of the world, of a draconic 'saviour' who will reshape the world in his image and offer salvation for a select few who pledge themselves. This cult could be sneered at, or ignored, but there will be a grain of truth to their prophecies which might linger and prompt further investigation, eventually unmasking the cultists.

So what about the Cataclysm itself? Well that's gotta be huge. The event itself will probably happen offline (or at least in the cinematic) but what if the world event concluded with a bang? What if the world shook and then went offline, even if it was just a rolling restart. Something to acknowledge a humongous event had just taken place. Patch 4.0 could then kick in and along with it, the graphical changes. Your toon could "wake up" after being knocked out during the chaos in a very different place. The cities could be filled with rubble and within minutes reports could come from the outlying zones that bad things had happened. Ashenvale is destroyed, the Barrens is now split by rivers of boiling magma. New quests could have you rescuing people from the wreckage, helping with the clean up efforts or using a flying mount to survey the new landscape. However over the next few weeks, things would settle down. The cities would be rebuilt, bridges built across the shattered zones and, through a series of mini patches, life could begin to return to Desolace.
At the same time, the territory lines could be redrafted. Perhaps even in a series of world PvP or scripted events ending in the Horde taking the Zoram Strand and Southshore. Either way, it's important that the effects of this devastating events don't just go away with the release of Cataclysm. There needs to be after-effects that continue even after Deathwing's reentry into Azeroth, to impress the gravity of the situation. The Age of Cataclysm will eventually be upon us and it will change everything.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: Patches, Events, Odds and ends, Blizzard, Expansions, Lore, Cataclysm, Worgen, Goblin

Wow, a global emote, a patch day, and a letter. You really think big, don't you Mr. Blackone?

Oh em gee... talk about epic!! This idea would *rock* and I hope they're stalking this board for ideas! How absolutely EPIC would it be for a gaming company, in the process of releasing an expansion, were to build up to the eventm, and then deliberately disconnect their entire user base, to "simulate" being knocked out by the realm shattering event, and after the patch is applied and we log back in, have our characters awakren via a cinematic opening where we are shown some examples of what has just happened...
lol you STINK for putting these ideas out here for us to twist over for months.... hehe

Your character is "locked" in a phased version of a major city (based on your race and level) once the patch goes live. Constant yells are being heard from angry NPC's. You go to the leader of said city, and they give you a quest to inspect the earthquakes outside the city. As you begin to leave, a huge quake (the Cataclysm) shakes the land. Your character falls and the screen fades to black.
When you awaken, the city has been transformed - you are now in the post-Cataclysm world.

I like the point about an event lasting after the launch. Things don't just change over night, so having a gradual change would be nice to see. Perhaps some phasing tech/quests would work out well for this? Eventually things would change for everyone, but for those that want to help bring about those changes in the aftermath I think it would be a lot of fun.

i think we should see all the alliance leaders and horde leaders talking about whats going on mostly cause i really want to see all the leaders just talking to each other and see how they work together

Revamped elemental invasions? Maybe water elementals attacking shorefront communities like Menethil, ratchet, etc. While earth elementals can show up pretty much anywhere but maybe emanating from where deepholm will be or where the outlets for deepholm will be. Fire elementals can show up anywhere you expect there to be a lot of lava, as well as earth elementals. Maybe they could have a wide swath of the Barrens be attacked by earth and fire elementals that corresponds to where chasm will be?

After the event, the Tauren Chieftains need to launch a world benefit tour for the Injured & refugees, timed to coincide with each zone/city's repair and rebuilding. Tour-shirt tabard for attendees! Mosh-pit PvP zone!

I think that there is going to slowly be some key figures in each capital city that will slowly over time reveal themselves as Twilight Hammer cultist.
For example, Neeru Fireblade, as well as some New Horde Shattered Hand defect to the Twilight Hammer to overthrow Thrall, which leads many to suspect good key figures as Twilight Hammer mutinists, being stopped by Kor'kron Elite. This would be similar to the Salem Witch Trials/Red Communist Scare, and eventually lead (and end) with Garrosh accusing Cairne of being a Twilight Hammer leading figure, killing him in cold blood.
That's right, rebellion in the streets of the Capital cities!

Wouldn't that be so awesome? What would be very cool is if when you "wake up" you are in a random location that is not magma (no instant deaths) and you have a debuff called something like "Shooken Up: Movement speed reduced by 70%" and the area would occasionally get blurry for a second or two like you actually got hit by a huge explosion. Then after 5 minutes or so the blurring/movement speed would go away (all this time you hear laughter and screaming (deathwing retunring)) and you see the world......torn up......forever.....then you die (don't worry you can run back) and after you res you can start helping like the author said.
Thornitus Aug 27th 2009 8:57PM
Just an edit for my comment.
For the period of Shooken Up you will be in first person mode and everything except the image on the screen (no addons, no mini-map, no nothing except what you would see with alt-z) once you release your spirit it goes back to normal.
And for those who might of wondered, yes I did get this idea from the Aftermath mission in CoD4.

Here are some things I'd like to see.
Somehow Grull the Dragonkiller coming back to life. IDK why, but I think Deathwing killing Grull would be an awesome cinematic, especially if the dialouge was done right. Like, he was ressurected in some means by the ogres, and a portal to Blades Edge was found, he finds his way out, and upon entering the new world, he sees a Dragon that even the Dragonkiller cannot take.
Epic dialouge between the two, about Deathwing telling him that he's no normal dragon, they duke it out, Deathwing wins rather easily.
No, this isn't patch day event, this would be something that could conclude the patch, like right before you take on Deathwing himself. No real rhyme or reason to it, I just want to see Grull get owned hardcore by a dragon to make his title sound stupid.
Other than that, pre-event I'm guessing we'll see some cultist talking about the coming apocolypse. Thrall, being a spiritual person, thinks the people might be onto something, and they fortify Org with steel, so you can take some dailes where you collect a special type of metal. (There are pictures of Org with steel walls) the same could be done for all starting areas.
The Darkspear isles, and Gnomeregan could be remade into cities, perhaps before the expansion. With phasing, they could make it so the lowbies can still quest there, but higher players can do quest to gain rep with darkspear, and build a nice little city. The Cataclysm makes the tides receed a bit, revealing more land to work with. Not really a "capital" city persay, but it'd be nice for the trolls to have something, and same with Gnomeregan.
since every race would have dailies, it'd be a great way to raise rep, right before the big event, and it'd be a nice way to show how the areas got changed for flying mounts, without making it seems as if they rebuilt org in a day, (same thing with other places that are getting remade).
Shamans in the Barrens predicting an occurence. Maybe some dailies for the Earthen Ring, involving gathering samples, and fighting some elementals near where the split will occur.
Lakeshire, some dailies to gather stone and wood to get the bridge finished.
Then, when the patch drops, it will seem as if your efforts weren't in vain. Org will indeed be fortified, the lakeshire bridge will indeed be completed.
This update presents the opportunity to make it feel as if grinding daily quest is actually DOING something. Got a little taste of this at the argent tourney with the goblin quest where you collect wood and stone.
Then, on the day of the event, several earthquakes throughout the day, along with shamans mainly predicting the coming cataclysm. (since they are very well attuned with nature, i'm sure they can at least detect something is coming). Thrall, being very shamanistic, and very trustful of people he respects, orders that proper actions be taken, and Org prepares for an attack. I guess the same could happen in Stormwind, but I don't really know how they'd predict it, perhaps medivh appears and tells Jaina, who relays the info to Varian.
You gather resources, gaining rep with old world factions all the while, and then the big one happens. Big earthquake, followed by elementals flowing from every which way. Earthen, Fire, Water elementals all attack the major cities, including some of the gnarlier ones. You fight them off, and eventually, the final earthquake happens. It last for several minutes, and everybody gets knocked down, server restart. When the patch drops, everybody starts off in a main city. Perhaps a phased area, or maybe just near the center of the city. The phased area could give some more opportunites, as you could be on the road to recovery.
There is a quest where you consult a mage, who then ports you to some key areas to see how things are. All major cities, and some key towns (mainly to get flight paths, since they will be different. ) After doing the intel, and getting flight paths, you are realesed and if you are 80, you can take quest to get to the frontline, while the lower ones might take a different quest where they leave.
tl;dr, some fun ideas that will never happen. (especially the dragonkiller getting owned by deathwing, sadly. )

A year from now I'm going to forget everything from this article. What's the point of this?
This is like those horrible predictions from the 1950s where they thought there'd be moon colonies and we'd have tvs on the inside of our eyelids.
Darkseid Aug 27th 2009 9:58PM
All of this sounds good and very epic, except the whole blackout...rolling restart thing. Blizz has a hard enough time keeping us on, and letting us log in, as is, without intentionally screwing with that part of the game.
Black out-yes....Wake up not knowing what happen-okay....anything to do with kicking us off the game-not so much! LOL
Dreadskull Aug 27th 2009 9:52PM
Whatever is planned, I hope it eventually has Deathwing or Twilight/Black dragons raid the cities... and do actual damage to buildings and whatnot as well as pose real threats to players and NPCs.
Oneiroi Aug 27th 2009 9:55PM
After the zombie attack, i'm hoping for some sort of werewolf attack. Or maybe everyone coming down with werewolfitis.
Jason Aug 27th 2009 9:59PM
Massive earthquakes that shake our screens and cause havoc every five minutes. Compared to what some people thought of the Plague, this would be a breeze!

Subway+Earthquake = no more subway, or a very dysfunctional, not so safe subway.
Usually.
And no, not the sandwich :x.
