WoW Rookie: Handing over the goods

You've saved for weeks. You've farmed for mats; you've farmed for gold. You've scoured the Auction House and nabbed every last, hard-to-find component. You have everything you need for that Big Cool Crafted Item. The final question remains: How do you know the crafter to whom you've just handed your precious trove of materials won't simply turn around and log off?
The best insurance against hit-and-run crafting is an ounce or two of prevention. The safest methods, of course, are to make your item yourself or to use a crafter who's able to provide all the necessary materials. If those options aren't on the table, however, you'll need to track down a reputable maker. We'll show you how to cover your bases.
Select a known crafter. Ask friends and guildmates for recommendations - heck, don't forget to check and see if your friends and guildies can get the job done for you first! If not, choose a crafter you've seen doing business over Trade over an extended period of time. Membership in a respected guild can also be a good sign. If you're still unsure, take a peek at (/inspect) their own gear; if you don't see any signs of their specialty on their own gear, use caution.
Invite your crafter to a group. Grouping makes it easier to meet up and see what actions he or she is performing with your mats.
Verify that the crafter can make the item you need. Whisper, "I want to make sure I have all the correct mats. Can you link me your profession, please?" They'll respond by sending you a gold link referring to the appropriate profession. Clicking that will open a window showing all the recipes that player knows. Make sure the item you want is listed.
Click it right. It's easy to get caught waiting impatiently without noticing that the Trade window isn't green. Learn Trade window basics.
Use the No Trade window when possible. Some effects and services can be performed by putting your item in the No Trade window (the very last, bottom slot in the trade window). When you use the No Trade window, there's absolutely no risk that the other player can acquire your item, even if you both click "Trade." Services that can be performed from the No Trade window include:
Hand over your mats. Crafters can't make an item from mats in the trade panel; they have to have the materials in their inventory before they can craft. It's time for the hand-off.
Report theft. If the worst happens and the crafter "disappears" with your materials, file a ticket with a GM.

I add the guy to my firends list to keep track of him and I take a screen shot of the trade screen too.
If someone screws me over, I go to the Realm Forums and plaster his name and a link to the screenshot all over the place to make sure nobody ever deals with him again.
If they are in a guild, I also track down the guild leaders using WoWarmory and let them know they have a ninja and if they don't take action, I'll go into trade chat and warn everyone on the server about the guild and the players involved.
Yea, you could say I would make them look REALLY bad.
Bottom Line - don't screw with me.
:)

Is should just point out at this point that its against ToS to name and shame someone on the forums UNLESS you have proof such as a screenshot

I like your style, sir. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I definitely thought this was going to be an article about people who are like my friend who just started the game. You know the type, I ask him to trade me something, then he opens up a trade window and proceeds to place the item in the "Will not be Traded" section of the window!

I have many crafting toons, and when someone asks me to make something for them, I am always happy to provide references. Both in-guild and out-of-guild friends will vouch for me, and all of them in respected high-profile guilds. Don't be afraid to ask for them... if someone balks, they probably have a reason.
Linked crafting is iffy, since AtlasLoot will allow you to link crafted items, so keep that in mind as well.

True. As is Wowhead. I've seen plenty of people asking for specific items in Trade and use the link for the recipe that will be used. I, myself, have used Wowhead to link the item I wanted made.
Though, the advice in the article does help out. It is less likely to get cheated by having the person link their profession. At least then you know they have the pattern in question. Doesn't really stop them from stealing the mats during trade, but that's a risk you take using Trade. It's not that dangerous. There aren't that many people out to steal your mats. Just enough people to make you wary.

And for that reason alone, you should always ask for their full profession link instead of only the item you're after.
Magma Aug 27th 2009 9:19AM
Being careful is always good, but most should know if you rip someone off the GM will not only take the items back, but most likely give your account some kind of action. Screwing people won't get you far.
Tinious Aug 27th 2009 9:20AM
I have had dozens, maybe hundreds of items crafted over the years and never had a single ninja.
In fact, I can't recall the number of times I've had an item crafted where the crafter refused any kind of tip or bonus (left over mats), and in many cases the crafters go out of their way to meet me somewhere.
So I always find articles like this perplexing - is there *really* that much ninjaing and backstabbing happening?
Jìnx Aug 27th 2009 9:22AM
Yes, there is. Don't let it happen to you.
micgillam Aug 27th 2009 10:12AM
I'm on the same page as Tinious here. Never been had someone ninja anything. I've had people turn down payment a few times. I still fully believe that there are people out there who will try to run off with your stuff, but I haven't hit it. I pay well above average though, that could play a part in it.
kabshiel Aug 27th 2009 12:28PM
I don't think it's a huge problem, primarily because GMs will give you your items back and punish the thief if it occurs. I remember hearing about it happening a couple times back in vanilla WoW, but never in BC or WotLK.
Brouck Aug 27th 2009 1:03PM
I was thinking the same thing, I have had countless of enchants, gem cuts and items crafted and have yet to been ripped off... now i just have enough toons to cut, enchant and craft anything i need.
Firestride Aug 27th 2009 5:07PM
Right: it basically never happens, and when it does, the GMs will make it right. So glad we're all talking about this.
Jonathan Aug 27th 2009 6:29PM
Never hurts to be safe, though. I've never been mugged before, but that doesn't mean I'll ever walk through certain parts of the city at 2 AM without watching my back.
Axolotl Aug 27th 2009 9:22AM
Another reason to get alts for all professions is to avoid having your mats stolen by a scammer.
It's just a matter of trust (and keeping your fingers crossed) when you hand over mats to another player.
I've crafted stuff myself for total strangers, and I always check for BOP if they want me to craft something (so they don't lose the mats because I can't give the item to them)
Jimbo Aug 27th 2009 9:23AM
Ensure that you spell out in text what the "deal" is. Don't make part of the deal on ventrilo or non-WoW email for instance. If someone takes something from you via fraud or deceit then generally Blizzard will make it right, but they have to actually be able to see the fraud. If someone says on vent "Give me the mats now and I'll give you 500g in 10 minutes" and then in game they just say "Thanks!"... you're not giving Blizz much to work with.

since when are poisons possible in the soulbound slot?
Jason P Sep 23rd 2009 2:44PM
It is possible for one rogue to apply poison to another rogue's weapon in this manner. Although I dont know why they dont just give them the poison (possibly unless it's a poison that the receiving rogue cant apply himself/herself yet)
